We present a new empirical model for the mass assembly of dark matter halos. We approximate the growth of individual halos as a simple power-law function of time, where the power-law index smoothly decreases as the halo transitions from the fast-accretion regime at early times, to the slow-accretion regime at late times. Using large samples of halo merger trees taken from high-resolution cosmological simulations, we demonstrate that our 3-parameter model can approximate halo growth with a typical accuracy of 0.1 dex for t > 1 Gyr for all halos of present-day mass greater than 10^11Msun, including subhalos and host halos in gravity-only simulations, as well as in the TNG hydrodynamical simulation. We additionally present a new model for the assembly of halo populations, which not only reproduces average mass growth across time, but also faithfully captures the diversity with which halos assemble their mass. Our python implementation is based on the autodiff library JAX, and so our model self-consistently captures the mean and variance of halo mass accretion rate across cosmic time. We show that the connection between halo assembly and the large-scale density field, known as halo assembly bias, is accurately captured by our model, and that residual errors in our approximations to halo assembly history exhibit a negligible residual correlation with the density field. Our publicly available source code can be used to generate Monte Carlo realizations of cosmologically representative halo histories; our differentiable implementation facilitates the incorporation of our model into existing analytical halo model frameworks.

Dissipative dark matter self-interactions can affect halo evolution and change its structure. We perform a series of controlled N-body simulations to study impacts of the dissipative interactions on halo properties. The interplay between gravitational contraction and collisional dissipation can significantly speed up the onset of gravothermal collapse, resulting in a steep inner density profile. For reasonable choices of model parameters controlling the dissipation, the collapse timescale can be a factor of 10-100 shorter than that predicted in purely elastic self-interacting dark matter. The effect is maximized when energy loss per collision is comparable to characteristic kinetic energy of dark matter particles in the halo. Our simulations provide guidance for testing the dissipative nature of dark matter with astrophysical observations.
We study the probability distribution function (PDF) of relative velocity between two different dark matter halos (i.e. pairwise velocity) with a set of high-resolution cosmological $N$-body simulations. We investigate the pairwise velocity PDFs over a wide range of halo masses of $10^{12.5-15}, h^{-1}M_{odot}$ and redshifts of $0<z<1$. At a given set of masses, redshift and the separation length between two halos, our model requires three parameters to set the pairwise velocity PDF, whereas previous non-Gaussian models in the literature assume four or more free parameters. At the length scales of $r=5-40, [h^{-1}, mathrm{Mpc}]$, our model predicts the mean and dispersion of the pairwise velocity for dark matter halos with their masses of $10^{12.5-13.5} , [h^{-1}M_{odot}]$ at $0.3 < z < 1$ with a 5%-level precision, while the model precision reaches a 20% level (mostly a 10% level) for other masses and redshifts explored in the simulations. We demonstrate that our model of the pairwise velocity PDF provides an accurate mapping of the two-point clustering of massive-galaxy-sized halos at the scales of $O(10), h^{-1}mathrm{Mpc}$ between redshift and real space for a given real-space correlation function. For a mass-limited halo sample with their masses greater than $10^{13.5}, h^{-1}M_{odot}$ at $z=0.55$, our model can explain the monopole and quadropole moments of the redshift-space two-point correlations with a precision better than 5% at the scales of $5-40$ and $10-30, h^{-1}mathrm{Mpc}$, respectively. Our model of the pairwise velocity PDF will give a detailed explanation of statistics of massive galaxies at the intermediate scales in redshift surveys, including the non-linear redshift-space distortion effect in two-point correlation functions and the measurements of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect.
A self-interacting dark matter halo can experience gravothermal collapse, resulting in a central core with an ultrahigh density. It can further contract and collapse into a black hole, a mechanism proposed to explain the origin of supermassive black holes. We study dynamical instability of the core in general relativity. We use a truncated Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution to model the dark matter distribution and solve the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation. For given model parameters, we obtain a series of equilibrium configurations and examine their dynamical instability based on considerations of total energy, binding energy, fractional binding energy, and adiabatic index. The numerical results from our semi-analytical method are in good agreement with those from fully relativistic N-body simulations. We further show for the instability to occur in the classical regime, the boundary temperature of the core should be at least $10%$ of the mass of dark matter particles; for a $10^9~{rm M_odot}$ seed black hole, the particle mass needs to be larger than a few keV. These results can be used to constrain different collapse models, in particular, those with dissipative dark matter interactions.
We consider a dark matter halo (DMH) of a spherical galaxy as a Bose-Einstein condensate of the ultra-light axions interacting with the baryonic matter. In the mean-field limit, we have derived the integro-differential equation of the Hartree-Fock type for the spherically symmetrical wave function of the DMH component. This equation includes two independent dimensionless parameters: (i) b{eta}- the ratio of baryon and axion total mases and (ii) {xi}- the ratio of characteristic baryon and axion spatial parameters. We extended our dissipation algorithm for studying numerically the ground state of the axion halo in the gravitational field produced by the baryonic component. We calculated the characteristic size, Xc, of DMH as a function of b{eta} and {xi} and obtained an analytical approximation for Xc.
Cosmological simulations indicate that cold dark matter (CDM) halos should be triaxial. Verifying observationally this theoretical prediction is, however, less than straightforward because the assembly of galaxies is expected to modify the halo shapes and to render them more axisymmetric. We use a suite of N-body simulations to investigate quantitatively the effect of the growth of a central disk galaxy on the shape of triaxial dark matter halos. As expected, the halo responds to the presence of the disk by becoming more spherical. The net effect depends only weakly on the orientation of the disk relative to the halo principal axes or the timescale of disk assembly, but strongly on the overall gravitational importance of the disk. Our results show that exponential disks whose contribution peaks at less than ~50% of their circular velocity are unable to modify noticeably the shape of the gravitational potential of their surrounding halos. Many dwarf and low surface brightness galaxies are expected to be in this regime, and therefore their detailed kinematics could be used to probe halo triaxiality, one of the basic predictions of the CDM paradigm. We argue that the complex disk kinematics of the dwarf galaxy NGC 2976 might be the reflection of a triaxial halo. Such signatures of halo triaxiality should be common in galaxies where the luminous component is subdominant.
