We obtain estimates on the rate of decay of a solution to the wave equation on a stationary spacetime that tends to Minkowski space at a rate $O(lvert x rvert^{-kappa}),$ $kappa in (1,infty) backslash mathbb{N}.$ Given suitably smooth and decaying initial data, we show a wave locally enjoys the decay rate $O(t^{-kappa-2+epsilon})$.
We prove Prices law with an explicit leading order term for solutions $phi(t,x)$ of the scalar wave equation on a class of stationary asymptotically flat $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetimes including subextremal Kerr black holes. Our precise asymptotics in the full forward causal cone imply in particular that $phi(t,x)=c t^{-3}+mathcal O(t^{-4+})$ for bounded $|x|$, where $cinmathbb C$ is an explicit constant. This decay also holds along the event horizon on Kerr spacetimes and thus renders a result by Luk-Sbierski on the linear scalar instability of the Cauchy horizon unconditional. We moreover prove inverse quadratic decay of the radiation field, with explicit leading order term. We establish analogous results for scattering by stationary potentials with inverse cubic spatial decay. On the Schwarzschild spacetime, we prove pointwise $t^{-2 l-3}$ decay for waves with angular frequency at least $l$, and $t^{-2 l-4}$ decay for waves which are in addition initially static. This definitively settles Prices law for linear scalar waves in full generality. The heart of the proof is the analysis of the resolvent at low energies. Rather than constructing its Schwartz kernel explicitly, we proceed more directly using the geometric microlocal approach to the limiting absorption principle pioneered by Melrose and recently extended to the zero energy limit by Vasy.
We prove microlocal estimates at the trapped set of asymptotically Kerr spacetimes: these are spacetimes whose metrics decay inverse polynomially in time to a stationary subextremal Kerr metric. This combines two independent results. The first one is purely dynamical: we show that the stable and unstable manifolds of a decaying perturbation of a time-translation-invariant dynamical system with normally hyperbolic trapping are smooth and decay to their stationary counterparts. The second, independent, result provides microlocal estimates for operators whose null-bicharacteristic flow has a normally hyperbolic invariant manifold, under suitable non-degeneracy conditions on the stable and unstable manifolds; this includes operators on closed manifolds, as well as operators on spacetimes for which the invariant manifold lies at future infinity.
We consider the resolvent on asymptotically Euclidean warped product manifolds in an appropriate 0-Gevrey class, with trapped sets consisting of only finitely many components. We prove that the high-frequency resolvent is either bounded by $C_epsilon |lambda|^epsilon$ for any $epsilon>0$, or blows up faster than any polynomial (at least along a subsequence). A stronger result holds if the manifold is analytic. The method of proof is to exploit the warped product structure to separate variables, obtaining a one-dimensional semiclassical Schrodinger operator. We then classify the microlocal resolvent behaviour associated to every possible type of critical value of the potential, and translate this into the associated resolvent estimates. Weakly stable trapping admits highly concentrated quasimodes and fast growth of the resolvent. Conversely, using a delicate inhomogeneous blowup procedure loosely based on the classical positive commutator argument, we show that any weakly unstable trapping forces at least some spreading of quasimodes. As a first application, we conclude that either there is a resonance free region of size $| Im lambda | leq C_epsilon | Re lambda |^{-1-epsilon}$ for any $epsilon>0$, or there is a sequence of resonances converging to the real axis faster than any polynomial. Again, a stronger result holds if the manifold is analytic. As a second application, we prove a spreading result for weak quasimodes in partially rectangular billiards.
We study the generalized eigenvalue problem on the whole space for a class of integro-differential elliptic operators. The nonlocal operator is over a finite measure, but this has no particular structure and it can even be singular. The first part of the paper presents results concerning the existence of a principal eigenfunction. Then we present various necessary and/or sufficient conditions for the maximum principle to hold, and use these to characterize the simplicity of the principal eigenvalue.
A numerical analysis shows that a class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity with a scalar field minimally and nonminimally coupled to the curvature allows static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions with scalar-field hair in asymptotically flat spacetimes. In the limit when the horizon radius of the black hole tends to zero, regular scalar solitons are found. The asymptotically flat solutions are obtained provided that the scalar potential $V(phi)$ of the theory is not positive semidefinite and such that its local minimum is also a zero of the potential, the scalar field settling asymptotically at that minimum. The configurations for the minimal coupling case, although unstable under spherically symmetric linear perturbations, are regular and thus can serve as counterexamples to the no-scalar-hair conjecture. For the nonminimal coupling case, the stability will be analyzed in a forthcoming paper.
