We present a novel method to learn temporally consistent 3D reconstruction of clothed people from a monocular video. Recent methods for 3D human reconstruction from monocular video using volumetric, implicit or parametric human shape models, produce per frame reconstructions giving temporally inconsistent output and limited performance when applied to video. In this paper, we introduce an approach to learn temporally consistent features for textured reconstruction of clothed 3D human sequences from monocular video by proposing two advances: a novel temporal consistency loss function; and hybrid representation learning for implicit 3D reconstruction from 2D images and coarse 3D geometry. The proposed advances improve the temporal consistency and accuracy of both the 3D reconstruction and texture prediction from a monocular video. Comprehensive comparative performance evaluation on images of people demonstrates that the proposed method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art learning-based single image 3D human shape estimation approaches achieving significant improvement of reconstruction accuracy, completeness, quality and temporal consistency.
We introduce MotioNet, a deep neural network that directly reconstructs the motion of a 3D human skeleton from monocular video.While previous methods rely on either rigging or inverse kinematics (IK) to associate a consistent skeleton with temporally coherent joint rotations, our method is the first data-driven approach that directly outputs a kinematic skeleton, which is a complete, commonly used, motion representation. At the crux of our approach lies a deep neural network with embedded kinematic priors, which decomposes sequences of 2D joint positions into two separate attributes: a single, symmetric, skeleton, encoded by bone lengths, and a sequence of 3D joint rotations associated with global root positions and foot contact labels. These attributes are fed into an integrated forward kinematics (FK) layer that outputs 3D positions, which are compared to a ground truth. In addition, an adversarial loss is applied to the velocities of the recovered rotations, to ensure that they lie on the manifold of natural joint rotations. The key advantage of our approach is that it learns to infer natural joint rotations directly from the training data, rather than assuming an underlying model, or inferring them from joint positions using a data-agnostic IK solver. We show that enforcing a single consistent skeleton along with temporally coherent joint rotations constrains the solution space, leading to a more robust handling of self-occlusions and depth ambiguities.
We present a novel method to improve the accuracy of the 3D reconstruction of clothed human shape from a single image. Recent work has introduced volumetric, implicit and model-based shape learning frameworks for reconstruction of objects and people from one or more images. However, the accuracy and completeness for reconstruction of clothed people is limited due to the large variation in shape resulting from clothing, hair, body size, pose and camera viewpoint. This paper introduces two advances to overcome this limitation: firstly a new synthetic dataset of realistic clothed people, 3DVH; and secondly, a novel multiple-view loss function for training of monocular volumetric shape estimation, which is demonstrated to significantly improve generalisation and reconstruction accuracy. The 3DVH dataset of realistic clothed 3D human models rendered with diverse natural backgrounds is demonstrated to allows transfer to reconstruction from real images of people. Comprehensive comparative performance evaluation on both synthetic and real images of people demonstrates that the proposed method significantly outperforms the previous state-of-the-art learning-based single image 3D human shape estimation approaches achieving significant improvement of reconstruction accuracy, completeness, and quality. An ablation study shows that this is due to both the proposed multiple-view training and the new 3DVH dataset. Most of the deep-learning based depth and ego-motion networks have been designed for visible cameras. However, visible cameras heavily rely on the presence of an external light source. Therefore, it is challenging to use them under low-light conditions such as night scenes, tunnels, and other harsh conditions. A thermal camera is one solution to compensate for this problem because it detects Long Wave Infrared Radiation(LWIR) regardless of any external light sources. However, despite this advantage, both depth and ego-motion estimation research for the thermal camera are not actively explored until so far. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised learning method for the all-day depth and ego-motion estimation. The proposed method exploits multi-spectral consistency loss to gives complementary supervision for the networks by reconstructing visible and thermal images with the depth and pose estimated from thermal images. The networks trained with the proposed method robustly estimate the depth and pose from monocular thermal video under low-light and even zero-light conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to simultaneously estimate both depth and ego-motion from the monocular thermal video in an unsupervised manner.
Deep learning-based blind super-resolution (SR) methods have recently achieved unprecedented performance in upscaling frames with unknown degradation. These models are able to accurately estimate the unknown downscaling kernel from a given low-resolution (LR) image in order to leverage the kernel during restoration. Although these approaches have largely been successful, they are predominantly image-based and therefore do not exploit the temporal properties of the kernels across multiple video frames. In this paper, we investigated the temporal properties of the kernels and highlighted its importance in the task of blind video super-resolution. Specifically, we measured the kernel temporal consistency of real-world videos and illustrated how the estimated kernels might change per frame in videos of varying dynamicity of the scene and its objects. With this new insight, we revisited previous popular video SR approaches, and showed that previous assumptions of using a fixed kernel throughout the restoration process can lead to visual artifacts when upscaling real-world videos. In order to counteract this, we tailored existing single-image and video SR techniques to leverage kernel consistency during both kernel estimation and video upscaling processes. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world videos show substantial restoration gains quantitatively and qualitatively, achieving the new state-of-the-art in blind video SR and underlining the potential of exploiting kernel temporal consistency.
In this paper, we investigate the problem of unpaired video-to-video translation. Given a video in the source domain, we aim to learn the conditional distribution of the corresponding video in the target domain, without seeing any pairs of corresponding videos. While significant progress has been made in the unpaired translation of images, directly applying these methods to an input video leads to low visual quality due to the additional time dimension. In particular, previous methods suffer from semantic inconsistency (i.e., semantic label flipping) and temporal flickering artifacts. To alleviate these issues, we propose a new framework that is composed of carefully-designed generators and discriminators, coupled with two core objective functions: 1) content preserving loss and 2) temporal consistency loss. Extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluations demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method against previous approaches. We further apply our framework to a domain adaptation task and achieve favorable results.
