In most student dorms in developing countries, a large number of people live in single-function dorm units. The division of the dormitory is too fixed, resulting in the dormitory often lacking functional spaces such as entertainment, sports, meetings, etc. At the same time, a large number of people are likely to cause aggregation at a fixed time, which is not conducive to maintaining social distance under pandemic conditions such as COVID-19. This brings a lot of inconvenience to students life studies and management staff. In this paper, we present a smart dormitory system named Otaku using the Internet of Things technology to integrate facilities related to student dormitory life. By splitting the dormitory into several different categories according to their functionality by using smart door lock design, the system can achieve a more effective and flexible resource allocation, which not only helps the school management but also benefits students.

An Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) has been shown to improve students learning outcomes by providing a personalized curriculum that addresses individual needs of every student. However, despite the effectiveness and efficiency that ITS brings to students learning process, most of the studies in ITS research have conducted less effort to design the interface of ITS that promotes students interest in learning, motivation and engagement by making better use of AI features. In this paper, we explore AI-driven design for the interface of ITS describing diagnostic feedback for students problem-solving process and investigate its impacts on their engagement. We propose several interface designs powered by different AI components and empirically evaluate their impacts on student engagement through Santa, an active mobile ITS. Controlled A/B tests conducted on more than 20K students in the wild show that AI-driven interface design improves the factors of engagement by up to 25.13%.
The Belle II experiment is a high-energy physics experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. Using Belle II data, high precision measurement of rare decays and CP-violation in heavy quarks and leptons can be performed to probe New Physics. In this paper, we present the archiver system used to store the monitoring data of the Belle II detector and discuss in particular how we maintain the system that archives the monitoring process variables of the subdetectors. We currently save about 26 thousand variables including the temperature of various subdetectors components, status of water leak sensors, high voltage power supply status, data acquisition status, and luminosity information of the colliding beams. For stable data taking, it is essential to collect and archive these variables. We ensure the availability and consistency of all the variables from the subdetector and other systems, as well as the status of the archiver itself are consistent and regularly updated. To cope with a possible hardware failure, we prepared a backup archiver that is synchronized with the main archiver.

This paper reports a detailed experimental characterization of optical performances of Visible Light Communication (VLC) system using a real traffic light for ultra-low latency, infrastructure-to-vehicle (I2V) communications for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) protocols. Despite the implementation of long sought ITS protocols poses the crucial need to detail how the features of optical stages influence the overall performances of a VLC system in realistic configurations, such characterization has rarely been addressed at present. We carried out an experimental investigation in a realistic configuration where a regular traffic light (TX), enabled for VLC transmission, sends digital information towards a receiving stage (RX), composed by an optical condenser and a dedicated amplified photodiode stage. We performed a detailed measurements campaign of VLC performances encompassing a broad set of optical condensers, and for TX-RX distances in the range 3 - 50 m, in terms of both effective field of view (EFOV) and packet error rate (PER). The results show several nontrivial behaviors for different lens sets as a function of position on the measurement grid, highlighting critical aspects as well as identifying most suitable optical configurations depending on the specific application and on the required EFOV. In this paper we also provide a theoretical model for both the signal intensity and the EFOV as a function of several parameters, such as distance, RX orientation and focal length of the specific condenser. Our results could be very relevant in the near future to assess a most suited solution in terms of acceptance angle when designing a VLC system for real applications, where angle-dependent misalignment effects play a non-negligible role, and we argue that it could have more general implications with respect to the pristine I2V case mentioned here.

Gym-ANM is a Python package that facilitates the design of reinforcement learning (RL) environments that model active network management (ANM) tasks in electricity networks. Here, we describe how to implement new environments and how to write code to interact with pre-existing ones. We also provide an overview of ANM6-Easy, an environment designed to highlight common ANM challenges. Finally, we discuss the potential impact of Gym-ANM on the scientific community, both in terms of research and education. We hope this package will facilitate collaboration between the power system and RL communities in the search for algorithms to control future energy systems.
Greenhouse environment is the key to influence crops production. However, it is difficult for classical control methods to give precise environment setpoints, such as temperature, humidity, light intensity and carbon dioxide concentration for greenhouse because it is uncertain nonlinear system. Therefore, an intelligent close loop control framework based on model embedded deep reinforcement learning (MEDRL) is designed for greenhouse environment control. Specifically, computer vision algorithms are used to recognize growing periods and sex of crops, followed by the crop growth models, which can be trained with different growing periods and sex. These model outputs combined with the cost factor provide the setpoints for greenhouse and feedback to the control system in real-time. The whole MEDRL system has capability to conduct optimization control precisely and conveniently, and costs will be greatly reduced compared with traditional greenhouse control approaches.
