In the field of topology optimization, the homogenization approach has been revived as an important alternative to the established, density-based methods because it can represent the microstructural design at a much finer length-scale than the computational grid. The optimal microstructure for a single load case is an orthogonal rank-3 laminate. A rank-3 laminate can be described in terms of frame fields, which are also an important tool for mesh generation in both 2D and 3D. We propose a method for generating multi-laminar structures from frame fields. Rather than relying on integrative approaches that find a parametrization based on the frame field, we find stream surfaces, represented as point clouds aligned with frame vectors, and we solve an optimization problem to find well-spaced collections of such stream surfaces. The stream surface tracing is unaffected by the presence of singularities outside the region of interest. Neither stream surface tracing nor selecting well-spaced surface rely on combed frame fields. In addition to stream surface tracing and selection, we provide two methods for generating structures from stream surface collections. One of these methods produces volumetric solids by summing basis functions associated with each point of the stream surface collection. The other method reinterprets point sampled stream surfaces as a spatial twist continuum and produces a hexahedralization by dualizing a graph representing the structure. We demonstrate our methods on several frame fields produced using the homogenization approach for topology optimization, boundary-aligned, algebraic frame fields, and frame fields computed from closed-form expressions.

We introduce a new class $mathcal{G}$ of bipartite plane graphs and prove that each graph in $mathcal{G}$ admits a proper square contact representation. A contact between two squares is emph{proper} if they intersect in a line segment of positive length. The class $mathcal{G}$ is the family of quadrangulations obtained from the 4-cycle $C_4$ by successively inserting a single vertex or a 4-cycle of vertices into a face. For every graph $Gin mathcal{G}$, we construct a proper square contact representation. The key parameter of the recursive construction is the aspect ratio of the rectangle bounded by the four outer squares. We show that this aspect ratio may continuously vary in an interval $I_G$. The interval $I_G$ cannot be replaced by a fixed aspect ratio, however, as we show, the feasible interval $I_G$ may be an arbitrarily small neighborhood of any positive real.

Differential operators are widely used in geometry processing for problem domains like spectral shape analysis, data interpolation, parametrization and mapping, and meshing. In addition to the ubiquitous cotangent Laplacian, anisotropic second-order operators, as well as higher-order operators such as the Bilaplacian, have been discretized for specialized applications. In this paper, we study a class of operators that generalizes the fourth-order Bilaplacian to support anisotropic behavior. The anisotropy is parametrized by a symmetric frame field, first studied in connection with quadrilateral and hexahedral meshing, which allows for fine-grained control of local directions of variation. We discretize these operators using a mixed finite element scheme, verify convergence of the discretization, study the behavior of the operator under pullback, and present potential applications.
We study metric data structures for curves in doubling spaces, such as trajectories of moving objects in Euclidean $mathbb{R}^d$, where the distance between two curves is measured using the discrete Frechet distance. We design data structures in an emph{asymmetric} setting where the input is a curve (or a set of $n$ curves) each of complexity $m$ and the queries are with curves of complexity $kll m$. We show that there exist approximate data structures that are independent of the input size $N = d cdot n cdot m$ and we study how to maintain them dynamically if the input is given in the stream. Concretely, we study two types of data structures: (i) distance oracles, where the task is to store a compressed version of the input curve, which can be used to answer queries for the distance of a query curve to the input curve, and (ii) nearest-neighbor data structures, where the task is to preprocess a set of input curves to answer queries for the input curve closest to the query curve. In both cases we are interested in approximation. For curves embedded in Euclidean $mathbb{R}^d$ with constant $d$, our distance oracle uses space in $mathcal{O}((k log(epsilon^{-1}) epsilon^{-d})^k)$ ($epsilon$ is the precision parameter). The oracle performs $(1+epsilon)$-approximate queries in time in $mathcal{O}(k^2)$ and is deterministic. We show how to maintain this distance oracle in the stream using polylogarithmic additional memory. In the stream, we can dynamically answer distance queries to the portion of the stream seen so far in $mathcal{O}(k^4 log^2 m)$ time. We apply our techniques to the second problem, approximate near neighbor (ANN) data structures, and achieve an exponential improvement in the dependency on the complexity of the input curves compared to the state of the art.
Warping-based video stabilizers smooth camera trajectory by constraining each pixels displacement and warp stabilized frames from unstable ones accordingly. However, since the view outside the boundary is not available during warping, the resulting holes around the boundary of the stabilized frame must be discarded (i.e., cropping) to maintain visual consistency, and thus does leads to a tradeoff between stability and cropping ratio. In this paper, we make a first attempt to address this issue by proposing a new Out-of-boundary View Synthesis (OVS) method. By the nature of spatial coherence between adjacent frames and within each frame, OVS extrapolates the out-of-boundary view by aligning adjacent frames to each reference one. Technically, it first calculates the optical flow and propagates it to the outer boundary region according to the affinity, and then warps pixels accordingly. OVS can be integrated into existing warping-based stabilizers as a plug-and-play module to significantly improve the cropping ratio of the stabilized results. In addition, stability is improved because the jitter amplification effect caused by cropping and resizing is reduced. Experimental results on the NUS benchmark show that OVS can improve the performance of five representative state-of-the-art methods in terms of objective metrics and subjective visual quality. The code is publicly available at https://github.com/Annbless/OVS_Stabilization.
The problem of {em efficiently} finding the best match for a query in a given set with respect to the Euclidean distance or the cosine similarity has been extensively studied in literature. However, a closely related problem of efficiently finding the best match with respect to the inner product has never been explored in the general setting to the best of our knowledge. In this paper we consider this general problem and contrast it with the existing best-match algorithms. First, we propose a general branch-and-bound algorithm using a tree data structure. Subsequently, we present a dual-tree algorithm for the case where there are multiple queries. Finally we present a new data structure for increasing the efficiency of the dual-tree algorithm. These branch-and-bound algorithms involve novel bounds suited for the purpose of best-matching with inner products. We evaluate our proposed algorithms on a variety of data sets from various applications, and exhibit up to five orders of magnitude improvement in query time over the naive search technique.
