Audio-visual event localization aims to localize an event that is both audible and visible in the wild, which is a widespread audio-visual scene analysis task for unconstrained videos. To address this task, we propose a Multimodal Parallel Network (MPN), which can perceive global semantics and unmixed local information parallelly. Specifically, our MPN framework consists of a classification subnetwork to predict event categories and a localization subnetwork to predict event boundaries. The classification subnetwork is constructed by the Multimodal Co-attention Module (MCM) and obtains global contexts. The localization subnetwork consists of Multimodal Bottleneck Attention Module (MBAM), which is designed to extract fine-grained segment-level contents. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework achieves the state-of-the-art performance both in fully supervised and weakly supervised settings on the Audio-Visual Event (AVE) dataset.

We study the problem of localizing audio-visual events that are both audible and visible in a video. Existing works focus on encoding and aligning audio and visual features at the segment level while neglecting informative correlation between segments of the two modalities and between multi-scale event proposals. We propose a novel MultiModulation Network (M2N) to learn the above correlation and leverage it as semantic guidance to modulate the related auditory, visual, and fused features. In particular, during feature encoding, we propose cross-modal normalization and intra-modal normalization. The former modulates the features of two modalities by establishing and exploiting the cross-modal relationship. The latter modulates the features of a single modality with the event-relevant semantic guidance of the same modality. In the fusion stage,we propose a multi-scale proposal modulating module and a multi-alignment segment modulating module to introduce multi-scale event proposals and enable dense matching between cross-modal segments. With the auditory, visual, and fused features modulated by the correlation information regarding audio-visual events, M2N performs accurate event localization. Extensive experiments conducted on the AVE dataset demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms the state of the art in both supervised event localization and cross-modality localization.

The major challenge in audio-visual event localization task lies in how to fuse information from multiple modalities effectively. Recent works have shown that attention mechanism is beneficial to the fusion process. In this paper, we propose a novel joint attention mechanism with multimodal fusion methods for audio-visual event localization. Particularly, we present a concise yet valid architecture that effectively learns representations from multiple modalities in a joint manner. Initially, visual features are combined with auditory features and then turned into joint representations. Next, we make use of the joint representations to attend to visual features and auditory features, respectively. With the help of this joint co-attention, new visual and auditory features are produced, and thus both features can enjoy the mutually improved benefits from each other. It is worth noting that the joint co-attention unit is recursive meaning that it can be performed multiple times for obtaining better joint representations progressively. Extensive experiments on the public AVE dataset have shown that the proposed method achieves significantly better results than the state-of-the-art methods.
Emotion recognition in user-generated videos plays an important role in human-centered computing. Existing methods mainly employ traditional two-stage shallow pipeline, i.e. extracting visual and/or audio features and training classifiers. In this paper, we propose to recognize video emotions in an end-to-end manner based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Specifically, we develop a deep Visual-Audio Attention Network (VAANet), a novel architecture that integrates spatial, channel-wise, and temporal attentions into a visual 3D CNN and temporal attentions into an audio 2D CNN. Further, we design a special classification loss, i.e. polarity-consistent cross-entropy loss, based on the polarity-emotion hierarchy constraint to guide the attention generation. Extensive experiments conducted on the challenging VideoEmotion-8 and Ekman-6 datasets demonstrate that the proposed VAANet outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches for video emotion recognition. In this paper, we propose to make a systematic study on machines multisensory perception under attacks. We use the audio-visual event recognition task against multimodal adversarial attacks as a proxy to investigate the robustness of audio-visual learning. We attack audio, visual, and both modalities to explore whether audio-visual integration still strengthens perception and how different fusion mechanisms affect the robustness of audio-visual models. For interpreting the multimodal interactions under attacks, we learn a weakly-supervised sound source visual localization model to localize sounding regions in videos. To mitigate multimodal attacks, we propose an audio-visual defense approach based on an audio-visual dissimilarity constraint and external feature memory banks. Extensive experiments demonstrate that audio-visual models are susceptible to multimodal adversarial attacks; audio-visual integration could decrease the model robustness rather than strengthen under multimodal attacks; even a weakly-supervised sound source visual localization model can be successfully fooled; our defense method can improve the invulnerability of audio-visual networks without significantly sacrificing clean model performance.
We present AlignNet, a model that synchronizes videos with reference audios under non-uniform and irregular misalignments. AlignNet learns the end-to-end dense correspondence between each frame of a video and an audio. Our method is designed according to simple and well-established principles: attention, pyramidal processing, warping, and affinity function. Together with the model, we release a dancing dataset Dance50 for training and evaluation. Qualitative, quantitative and subjective evaluation results on dance-music alignment and speech-lip alignment demonstrate that our method far outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. Project video and code are available at https://jianrenw.github.io/AlignNet.
