Media-based modulation (MBM), exploiting rich scattering properties of transmission environments via different radiation patterns of a single reconfigurable antenna (RA), has brought new insights into future communication systems. In this study, considering this innovative transmission principle, we introduce the realistic, two-dimensional (2D), and open-source SimMBM channel simulator to support various applications of MBM systems at sub-6 GHz frequency band in different environments.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been recognized as a potential technology for 5G beyond and attracted tremendous research attention. However, channel estimation in RIS-aided system is still a critical challenge due to the excessive amount of parameters in cascaded channel. The existing compressive sensing (CS)-based RIS estimation schemes only adopt incomplete sparsity, which induces redundant pilot consumption. In this paper, we exploit the specific triple-structured sparsity of the cascaded channel, i.e., the common column sparsity, structured row sparsity after offset compensation and the common offsets among all users. Then a novel multi-user joint estimation algorithm is proposed. Simulation results show that our approach can significantly reduce pilot overhead in both ULA and UPA scenarios.
With the depletion of spectrum, wireless communication systems turn to exploit large antenna arrays to achieve the degree of freedom in space domain, such as millimeter wave massive multi-input multioutput (MIMO), reconfigurable intelligent surface assisted communications and cell-free massive MIMO. In these systems, how to acquire accurate channel state information (CSI) is difficult and becomes a bottleneck of the communication links. In this article, we introduce the concept of channel extrapolation that relies on a small portion of channel parameters to infer the remaining channel parameters. Since the substance of channel extrapolation is a mapping from one parameter subspace to another, we can resort to deep learning (DL), a powerful learning architecture, to approximate such mapping function. Specifically, we first analyze the requirements, conditions and challenges for channel extrapolation. Then, we present three typical extrapolations over the antenna dimension, the frequency dimension, and the physical terminal, respectively. We also illustrate their respective principles, design challenges and DL strategies. It will be seen that channel extrapolation could greatly reduce the transmission overhead and subsequently enhance the performance gains compared with the traditional strategies. In the end, we provide several potential research directions on channel extrapolation for future intelligent communications systems.
In this paper, we propose a physical layer security scheme that exploits a novel index modulation (IM) technique for coordinate interleaved orthogonal designs (CIOD). Utilizing the diversity gain of CIOD transmission, the proposed scheme, named CIOD-IM, provides an improved spectral efficiency by means of IM. In order to provide a satisfactory secrecy rate, we design a particular artificial noise matrix, which does not affect the performance of the legitimate receiver, while deteriorating the performance of the eavesdropper. We derive expressions of the ergodic secrecy rate and the theoretical bit error rate upper bound. In addition, we analyze the case of imperfect channel estimation by taking practical concerns into consideration. It is shown via computer simulations that the proposed scheme outperforms the existing IM-based schemes and might be a candidate for future secure communication systems.
Beamforming structures with fixed beam codebooks provide economical solutions for millimeter wave (mmWave) communications due to the low hardware cost. However, the training overhead to search for the optimal beamforming configuration is proportional to the codebook size. To improve the efficiency of beam tracking, we propose a beam tracking scheme based on the channel fingerprint database, which comprises mappings between statistical beamforming gains and user locations. The scheme tracks user movement by utilizing the trained beam configurations and estimating the gains of beam configurations that are not trained. Simulations show that the proposed scheme achieves significant beamforming performance gains over existing beam tracking schemes.
Terahertz (THz) communication is widely considered as a key enabler for future 6G wireless systems. However, THz links are subject to high propagation losses and inter-symbol interference due to the frequency selectivity of the channel. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) along with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) can be used to deal with these problems. Nevertheless, when the propagation delay across the base station (BS) antenna array exceeds the symbol period, the spatial response of the BS array varies across the OFDM subcarriers. This phenomenon, known as beam squint, renders narrowband combining approaches ineffective. Additionally, channel estimation becomes challenging in the absence of combining gain during the training stage. In this work, we address the channel estimation and hybrid combining problems in wideband THz massive MIMO with uniform planar arrays. Specifically, we first introduce a low-complexity beam squint mitigation scheme based on true-time-delay. Next, we propose a novel variant of the popular orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm to accurately estimate the channel with low training overhead. Our channel estimation and hybrid combining schemes are analyzed both theoretically and numerically. Moreover, the proposed schemes are extended to the multi-antenna user case. Simulation results are provided showcasing the performance gains offered by our design compared to standard narrowband combining and OMP-based channel estimation.
