We study particle production and unitarity violation caused by a curved target space right after inflation. We use the inflaton field value instead of cosmic time as the time variable, and derive a semiclassical formula for the spectrum of produced particles. We then derive a simple condition for unitarity violation during preheating, which we confirm by our semiclassical method and numerical solution. This condition depends not only on the target space curvature but also on the height of the inflaton potential at the end of inflation. This condition tells us, for instance, that unitarity is violated in running kinetic inflation and Higgs inflation, while unitarity is conserved in $alpha$-attractor inflation and Higgs-Palatini inflation.

Classical target space duality transformations are studied for the non-linear sigma model with a dilaton field. Working within the framework of the Hamiltonian formalism we require the duality transformation to be a property only of the target spaces. We obtain a set of restrictions on the geometrical data.
In this contribution to the CPT19 proceedings, we summarize efforts that use data from the MICROSCOPE space mission to search for Lorentz violation in the Standard-Model Extension.
In traditional models only an order one fraction of energy is transferred from the inflaton to radiation through nonperturbative resonance production in preheating immediately after inflation, due to backreaction effects. We propose a particle production mechanism that could improve the depletion of the inflaton energy density by up to four orders of magnitude. The improvement comes from the fast perturbative decays of resonantly produced daughter particles. They act as a spillway to drain these daughter particles, reducing their backreaction on the inflaton and keeping the resonant production effective for a longer period. Thus we dub the scenario spillway preheating. We also show that the fraction of energy density remaining in the inflaton has a simple inverse power-law scaling in the scenario. In general, spillway preheating is a much more efficient energy dissipation mechanism, which may have other applications in model building for particle physics.
We briefly review the concepts of generalized zero curvature conditions and integrability in higher dimensions, where integrability in this context is related to the existence of infinitely many conservation laws. Under certain assumptions, it turns out that these conservation laws are, in fact, generated by a class of geometric target space transformations, namely the volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. We classify the possible conservation laws of field theories for the case of a three-dimensional target space. Further, we discuss some explicit examples.
The $k$-essence theory is a prototypical class of scalar-field models that already gives rich phenomenology and has been a target of extensive studies in cosmology. General forms of shift-symmetric $k$-essence are known to suffer from formation of caustics in a planar-symmetric configuration, with the only exceptions of canonical and DBI-/cuscuton-type kinetic terms. With this in mind, we seek for multi-field caustic-free completions of a general class of shift-symmetric $k$-essence models in this paper. The field space in UV theories is naturally curved, and we introduce the scale of the curvature as the parameter that controls the mass of the heavy field(s) that would be integrated out in the process of EFT reduction. By numerical methods, we demonstrate that the introduction of a heavy field indeed resolves the caustic problem by invoking its motion near the would-be caustic formation. We further study the cosmological application of the model. By expanding the equations with respect to the curvature scale of the field space, we prove that the EFT reduction is successfully done by taking the limit of infinite curvature, both for the background and perturbation, with gravity included. The next leading-order computation is consistently conducted and shows that the EFT reduction breaks down in the limit of vanishing sound speed of the perturbation.
