Moving parcels from origin to destination should not require a lot of re-planning. However, the vast number of shipments and destinations, which need to be re-aligned in real-time due to various external factors makes the delivery process a complex issue to tackle. Anticipating the impact of external factors though can provide more robust logistic plans which are resilient to changes. The work described in this paper, was carried out in the EU-funded COG-LO project and addresses the issue of parcel delivery across the road network making use of context-awareness information as an input for the optimization operations. A positive impact derived from the implementation of these services is expected due to complex event detection, context awareness and decision support at both local and global level of logistics operations.
The uncertainties from distributed energy resources (DERs) bring significant challenges to the real-time operation of microgrids. In addition, due to the nonlinear constraints in the AC power flow equation and the nonlinearity of the battery storage model, etc., the optimization of the microgrid is a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. It is challenging to solve this kind of stochastic nonlinear optimization problem. To address the challenge, this paper proposes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based optimization strategy for the real-time operation of the microgrid. Specifically, we construct the detailed operation model for the microgrid and formulate the real-time optimization problem as a Markov Decision Process (MDP). Then, a double deep Q network (DDQN) based architecture is designed to solve the MINLP problem. The proposed approach can learn a near-optimal strategy only from the historical data. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is validated by the simulations on a 10-bus microgrid system and a modified IEEE 69-bus microgrid system. The numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms several existing methods.
This paper studies a dynamic real-time optimization in the context of model-based time-optimal operation of batch processes under parametric model mismatch. In order to tackle the model-mismatch issue, a receding-horizon policy is usually followed with frequent re-optimization. The main problem addressed in this study is the high computational burden that is usually required by such schemes. We propose an approach that uses parameterized conditions of optimality in the adaptive predictive-control fashion. The uncertainty in the model predictions is treated explicitly using reachable sets that are projected into the optimality conditions. Adaptation of model parameters is performed online using set-membership estimation. A class of batch membrane separation processes is in the scope of the presented applications, where the benefits of the presented approach are outlined.
With the large-scale integration of renewable power generation, frequency regulation resources (FRRs) are required to have larger capacities and faster ramp rates, which increases the cost of the frequency regulation ancillary service. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the frequency regulation cost and constraint along with real-time economic dispatch (RTED). In this paper, a data-driven distributionally robust optimization (DRO) method for RTED considering automatic generation control (AGC) is proposed. First, a Copula-based AGC signal model is developed to reflect the correlations among the AGC signal, load power and renewable generation variations. Secondly, samples of the AGC signal are taken from its conditional probability distribution under the forecasted load power and renewable generation variations. Thirdly, a distributionally robust RTED model considering the frequency regulation cost and constraint is built and transformed into a linear programming problem by leveraging the Wasserstein metric-based DRO technique. Simulation results show that the proposed method can reduce the total cost of power generation and frequency regulation.
Real-time simulation enables the understanding of system operating conditions by evaluating simulation models of physical components running synchronized at the real-time wall clock. Leveraging the real-time measurements of comprehensive system models, faster than real-time (FTRT) simulation allows the evaluation of system architectures at speeds faster than real-time. FTRT simulation can assist in predicting the systems behavior efficiently, thus assisting the operation of system processes. Namely, the provided acceleration can be used for improving system scheduling, assessing system vulnerabilities, and predicting system disruptions in real-time systems. The acceleration of simulation times can be achieved by utilizing digital real-time simulators (RTS) and high-performance computing (HPC) architectures. FTRT simulation has been widely used, among others, for the operation, design, and investigation of power system events, building emergency management plans, wildfire prediction, etc. In this paper, we review the existing literature on FTRT simulation and its applications in different disciplines, with a particular focus on power systems. We present existing system modeling approaches, simulation tools and computing frameworks, and stress the importance of FTRT accuracy.
The topic of this paper is the design of a fully distributed and real-time capable control scheme for the automation of road intersections. State of the art Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication technology is adopted. Vehicles distributively negotiate crossing priorities by a Consensus-Based Auction Algorithm (CBAA-M). Then, each agent solves a nonlinear Model Predictive Control (MPC) problem that computes the optimal trajectory avoiding collisions with higher priority vehicles and deciding the crossing order. The scheme is shown to be real-time capable and able to respond to sudden priority changes, e.g. if a vehicle gets an emergency call. Simulations reinforce theoretical results.
