We develop a non-perturbative model for valence parton distribution functions (PDFs) based on the quark interactions in the mean field of the nucleonic interior. The main motivation for the model is to obtain a mean field description of the valence quarks as a baseline to study the short range quark-quark interactions that generate high $x$ tail of valence quark distributions. The model is based on the separation of valence three-quark system from the residual nucleon system which is the source of the mean field. The nucleon structure function is calculated within effective light-front diagrammatic approach which allows to introduce light-front valence quark and residual wave functions. The model allows us to obtain a new relation between the position of the peak of $xq_V(x)$ distribution of the valence quark and the effective mass of the residual system, $m_R$: $x_{peak} approx {1over 4} (1-{m_Rover m_N})$ and naturally explains the difference in the peak positions for d- and u- quarks due to expected larger residual mass in the case of valence d- quark distribution. The parameters of the model are fixed by fitting the calculated valence quark distributions to the phenomenological parameterizations. This allowed us to estimate the total contribution due to quark-quark correlations which are expected to dominate at high x. The fit allowed also to obtain the $Q^2$ dependence of the mass of the residual system and its effective size which gives a new insight on the effects of the QCD evolution on strongly interacting mean field of the nucleon. Finally, the evaluated parameters of non-perturbative wave functions of valence 3q- and residual system allow them to be used in calculations of other observables such as nucleon form factors, generalized partonic and transverse momentum distributions.

We discuss unpolarized neutrino- and anti-neutrino-nucleon deep inelastic scattering (DIS) using a chiral doublet of baryonic sources with explicit symmetry breaking, in a slice of AdS$_5$ with both a hard and soft wall. We explicitly derive the direct and transition form factors for the vector and axial-vector currents for the holographic dual of a proton and neutron. We use them to derive the s-channel structure functions for neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering on a proton and neutron in bulk. The t-channel contributions stemming from the Pomeron and Reggeon exchanges are also evaluated explicitly. The pertinent even and odd structure functions in the limit of large and small parton momentum fraction $x$ are given. The results allow for the extraction of the nonperterbative parton distribution functions carried by the sea and valence quarks both at large-x and small-x regimes. Our holographic PDF sets compare well with LHAPDF and CTEQ PDF sets in the large-x and small-x regimes in the intermediate range of $Q^2<10~rm{GeV^2}$.

We extend the study of lowest moments, $<x>$ and $<x^2>$, of the parton distribution function of the nucleon to include those of the sea quarks; this entails a disconnected insertion calculation in lattice QCD. This is carried out on a $16^3 times 24$ quenched lattice with Wilson fermion. The quark loops are calculated with $Z_2$ noise vectors and unbiased subtractions, and multiple nucleon sources are employed to reduce the statistical errors. We obtain 5$sigma$ signals for $<x>$ for the $u,d,$ and $s$ quarks, but $<x^2>$ is consistent with zero within errors. We provide results for both the connected and disconnected insertions. The perturbatively renormalized $<x>$ for the strange quark at $mu = 2$ GeV is $<x>_{s+bar{s}} = 0.027 pm 0.006$ which is consistent with the experimental result. The ratio of $<x>$ for $s$ vs. $u/d$ in the disconnected insertion with quark loops is calculated to be $0.88 pm 0.07$. This is about twice as large as the phenomenologically fitted $displaystylefrac{< x>_{s+bar{s}}}{< x>_{bar{u}}+< x>_{bar{d}}}$ from experiments where $bar{u}$ and $bar{d}$ include both the connected and disconnected insertion parts. We discuss the source and implication of this difference.
We compute the critical temperature for the chiral transition in the background of a magnetic field in the linear sigma model, including the quark contribution and the thermo-magnetic effects induced on the coupling constants at one loop level. We show that the critical temperature decreases as a function of the field strength. The effect of fermions on the critical temperature is small and the main effect on this observable comes from the charged pions. The findings support the idea that the anticatalysis phenomenon receives a contribution due only to quiral symmetry effects independent of the deconfinement transition.

A possibility of the construction of a periodic table for the excited baryon spectrum is shown in the frame of a relativistic chiral quark model based on selection rules derived from the one-pion exchange mechanism. It is shown that all the $N^*$ and $Delta^*$ resonances appearing in the $pi N$ scattering data and strongly coupling to the $pi N$ channel are identified with the orbital configurations $(1S_{1/2})^2(nlj)$. Baryon resonances corresponding to the orbital configuration with two valence quarks in excited states couple strongly to the $pi pi N$-channel, but not to the $pi N$ channel. At low energy scale up to 2000 MeV, the obtained numerical estimations for the SU(2) baryon states (up to and including F-wave $N^*$ and $Delta^*$ resonances) within the schematic periodic table are mostly consistent with the experimental data. It is argued that due-to the overestimation of the ground state N(939) and Roper resonance N(1440) almost by the same amount and that the Roper resonance is a radial excitation of the N(939), the lowering mechanism for the both baryon states must be the same. The same mechanism is expected in the $Delta$ sector. At higher energies, where the experimental data are poor, we can extend our model schematically and predict seven new $N^*$ and four $Delta^*$ resonances with larger spin values.
We compute the pion electromagnetic form factor in a hybrid calculation with domain wall valence quarks and improved staggered (asqtad) sea quarks. This method can easily be extended to rho-to-gamma-pi transition form factors.
