It is known that the capacity of the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided cellular network can be effectively improved by reflecting the incident signals from the transmitter in a low-cost passive reflecting way. Nevertheless, in the actual network operation, the base station (BS) and IRS may belong to different operators, consequently, the IRS is reluctant to help the BS without any payment. Therefore, this paper investigates price-based reflection resource (elements) allocation strategies for an IRS-aided multiuser multiple-input and single-output (MISO) downlink communication systems, in which all transmissions over the same frequency band. Assuming that the IRS is composed with multiple modules, each of which is attached with a smart controller, thus, the states (active/idle) of module can be operated by its controller, and all controllers can be communicated with each other via fiber links. A Stackelberg game-based alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is proposed to jointly optimize the transmit beamforming at the BS and the passive beamforming of the active modules. Numerical examples are presented to verify the proposed algorithm. It is shown that the proposed scheme is effective in the utilities of both the BS and IRS.

It is known that the capacity of the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided cellular network can be effectively improved by reflecting the incident signals from the transmitter in a low-cost passive reflecting way. In this paper, we study the adoption of an IRS for downlink multi-user communication from a multi-antenna base station (BS). Nevertheless, in the actual network operation, the IRS operator can be selfish or have its own objectives due to competing/limited resources as well as deployment/maintenance cost. Therefore, in this paper, we develop a Stackelbeg game model to analyze the interaction between the BS and the IRS operator. Specifically, different from the existing studies on IRS that merely focus on tuning the reflection coefficient of all the reflection elements, we consider the reflection resource (elements) management, which can be realized via trigger module selection under our proposed IRS architecture that all the reflection elements are partially controlled by independent switches of controller. A Stackelberg game-based alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is proposed to jointly optimize the transmit beamforming at the BS and the passive beamforming of the triggered reflection modules. Numerical examples are presented to verify the proposed studies. It is shown that the proposed scheme is effective in the utilities of both the BS and IRS.

In this letter, we study the resource allocation for a multiuser intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system. Specifically, a multi-antenna base station (BS) transmits energy and information signals simultaneously to multiple energy harvesting receivers (EHRs) and information decoding receivers (IDRs) assisted by an IRS. Under this setup, we introduce a multi-objective optimization (MOOP) framework to investigate the fundamental trade-off between the data sum-rate maximization and the total harvested energy maximization, by jointly optimizing the energy/information beamforming vectors at the BS and the phase shifts at the IRS. This MOOP problem is first converted to a single-objective optimization problem (SOOP) via the $epsilon$-constraint method and then solved by majorization minimization (MM) and inner approximation (IA) techniques. Simulation results unveil a non-trivial trade-off between the considered competing objectives, as well as the superior performance of the proposed scheme as compared to various baseline schemes.
A novel framework of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided multiple-input single-output (MISO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network is proposed, where a base station (BS) serves multiple clusters with unfixed number of users in each cluster. The goal is to maximize the sum rate of all users by jointly optimizing the passive beamforming vector at the IRS, decoding order and power allocation coefficient vector, subject to the rate requirements of users. In order to tackle the formulated problem, a three-step approach is proposed. More particularly, a long short-term memory (LSTM) based algorithm is first adopted for predicting the mobility of users. Secondly, a K-means based Gaussian mixture model (K-GMM) algorithm is proposed for user clustering. Thirdly, a deep Q-network (DQN) based algorithm is invoked for jointly determining the phase shift matrix and power allocation policy. Simulation results are provided for demonstrating that the proposed algorithm outperforms the benchmarks, while the performance of IRS-NOMA system is better than IRS-OMA system.

This paper studies intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided full-duplex (FD) wireless-powered communication network (WPCN), where a hybrid access point (HAP) broadcasts energy signals to multiple devices for their energy harvesting in the downlink (DL) and meanwhile receives information signals in the uplink (UL) with the help of IRS. Particularly, we propose three types of IRS beamforming configurations to strike a balance between the system performance and signaling overhead as well as implementation complexity. We first propose the fully dynamic IRS beamforming, where the IRS phase-shift vectors vary with each time slot for both DL wireless energy transfer (WET) and UL wireless information transmission (WIT). To further reduce signaling overhead and implementation complexity, we then study two special cases, namely, partially dynamic IRS beamforming and static IRS beamforming. For the former case, two different phase-shift vectors can be exploited for the DL WET and the UL WIT, respectively, whereas for the latter case, the same phase-shift vector needs to be applied for both DL and UL transmissions. We aim to maximize the system throughput by jointly optimizing the time allocation, HAP transmit power, and IRS phase shifts for the above three cases. Two efficient algorithms based on alternating optimization and penalty-based algorithms are respectively proposed for both perfect self-interference cancellation (SIC) case and imperfect SIC case by applying successive convex approximation and difference-of-convex optimization techniques. Simulation results demonstrate the benefits of IRS for enhancing the performance of FD-WPCN, and also show that the IRS-aided FD-WPCN is able to achieve significantly performance gain compared to its counterpart with half-duplex when the self-interference (SI) is properly suppressed.
The performance of mobile edge computing (MEC) depends critically on the quality of the wireless channels. From this viewpoint, the recently advocated intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) technique that can proactively reconfigure wireless channels is anticipated to bring unprecedented performance gain to MEC. In this paper, the problem of network throughput optimization of an IRS-assisted multi-hop MEC network is investigated, in which the phase-shifts of the IRS and the resource allocation of the relays need to be jointly optimized. However, due to the coupling among the transmission links of different hops caused by the utilization of the IRS and the complicated multi-hop network topology, it is difficult to solve the considered problem by directly applying existing optimization techniques. Fortunately, by exploiting the underlying structure of the network topology and spectral graph theory, it is shown that the network throughput can be well approximated by the second smallest eigenvalue of the network Laplacian matrix. This key finding allows us to develop an effective iterative algorithm for solving the considered problem. Numerical simulations are performed to corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
