Autonomous flight for UAVs relies on visual information for avoiding obstacles and ensuring a safe collision-free flight. In addition to visual clues, safe UAVs often need connectivity with the ground station. In this paper, we study the synergies between vision and communications for edge computing-enabled UAV flight. By proposing a framework of Edge Computing Assisted Autonomous Flight (ECAAF), we illustrate that vision and communications can interact with and assist each other with the aid of edge computing and offloading, and further speed up the UAV mission completion. ECAAF consists of three functionalities that are discussed in detail: edge computing for 3D map acquisition, radio map construction from the 3D map, and online trajectory planning. During ECAAF, the interactions of communication capacity, video offloading, 3D map quality, and channel state of the trajectory form a positive feedback loop. Simulation results verify that the proposed method can improve mission performance by enhancing connectivity. Finally, we conclude with some future research directions.

In this paper, we study unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) with the objective to optimize computation offloading with minimum UAV energy consumption. In the considered scenario, a UAV plays the role of an aerial cloudlet to collect and process the computation tasks offloaded by ground users. Given the service requirements of users, we aim to maximize UAV energy efficiency by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory, the user transmit power, and computation load allocation. The resulting optimization problem corresponds to nonconvex fractional programming, and the Dinkelbach algorithm and the successive convex approximation (SCA) technique are adopted to solve it. Furthermore, we decompose the problem into multiple subproblems for distributed and parallel problem solving. To cope with the case when the knowledge of user mobility is limited, we adopt a spatial distribution estimation technique to predict the location of ground users so that the proposed approach can still be applied. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for maximizing the energy efficiency of UAV.
Edge computing enables Mobile Autonomous Systems (MASs) to execute continuous streams of heavy-duty mission-critical processing tasks, such as real-time obstacle detection and navigation. However, in practical applications, erratic patterns in channel quality, network load, and edge server load can interrupt the task flow execution, which necessarily leads to severe disruption of the systems key operations. Existing work has mostly tackled the problem with reactive approaches, which cannot guarantee task-level reliability. Conversely, in this paper we focus on learning-based predictive edge computing to achieve self-resilient task offloading. By conducting a preliminary experimental evaluation, we show that there is no dominant feature that can predict the edge-MAS system reliability, which calls for an ensemble and selection of weaker features. To tackle the complexity of the problem, we propose SeReMAS, a data-driven optimization framework. We first mathematically formulate a Redundant Task Offloading Problem (RTOP), where a MAS may connect to multiple edge servers for redundancy, and needs to select which server(s) to transmit its computing tasks in order to maximize the probability of task execution while minimizing channel and edge resource utilization. We then create a predictor based on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), which produces the optimum task assignment based on application-, network- and telemetry-based features. We prototype SeReMAS on a testbed composed by a drone, mounting a PixHawk flight controller, a Jetson Nano board, and three 802.11n WiFi interfaces. We extensively evaluate SeReMAS by considering an application where one drone offloads high-resolution images for real-time analysis to three edge servers on the ground. Experimental results show that SeReMAS improves task execution probability by $17%$ with respect to existing reactive-based approaches.
This paper considers the motion energy minimization problem for a wirelessly connected robot using millimeter-wave (mm-wave) communications. These are assisted by an intelligent reflective surface (IRS) that enhances the coverage at such high frequencies characterized by high blockage sensitivity. The robot is subject to time and uplink communication quality of service (QoS) constraints. This is a fundamental problem in fully automated factories that characterize Industry 4.0, where robots may have to perform tasks with given deadlines while maximizing the battery autonomy and communication efficiency. To account for the mutual dependence between robot position and communication QoS, we propose a joint optimization of robot trajectory and beamforming at the IRS and access point (AP). We present a solution that first exploits mm-wave channel characteristics to decouple beamforming and trajectory optimization. Then, the latter is solved by a successive-convex optimization-based algorithm. The algorithm takes into account the obstacles positions and a radio map to avoid collisions and poorly covered areas. We prove that the algorithm can converge to a solution satisfying the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. The simulation results show a dramatic reduction of the motion energy consumption with respect to methods that aim to find maximum-rate trajectories. Moreover, we show how the IRS and the beamforming optimization improve the motion energy efficiency of the robot.
Autonomous vehicles (AVs) can achieve the desired results within a short duration by offloading tasks even requiring high computational power (e.g., object detection (OD)) to edge clouds. However, although edge clouds are exploited, real-time OD cannot always be guaranteed due to dynamic channel quality. To mitigate this problem, we propose an edge network-assisted real-time OD framework~(EODF). In an EODF, AVs extract the region of interests~(RoIs) of the captured image when the channel quality is not sufficiently good for supporting real-time OD. Then, AVs compress the image data on the basis of the RoIs and transmit the compressed one to the edge cloud. In so doing, real-time OD can be achieved owing to the reduced transmission latency. To verify the feasibility of our framework, we evaluate the probability that the results of OD are not received within the inter-frame duration (i.e., outage probability) and their accuracy. From the evaluation, we demonstrate that the proposed EODF provides the results to AVs in real-time and achieves satisfactory accuracy.
Federated learning (FL), invented by Google in 2016, has become a hot research trend. However, enabling FL in wireless networks has to overcome the limited battery challenge of mobile users. In this regard, we propose to apply unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-empowered wireless power transfer to enable sustainable FL-based wireless networks. The objective is to maximize the UAV transmit power efficiency, via a joint optimization of transmission time and bandwidth allocation, power control, and the UAV placement. Directly solving the formulated problem is challenging, due to the coupling of variables. Hence, we leverage the decomposition technique and a successive convex approximation approach to develop an efficient algorithm, namely UAV for sustainable FL (UAV-SFL). Finally, simulations illustrate the potential of our proposed UAV-SFL approach in providing a sustainable solution for FL-based wireless networks, and in reducing the UAV transmit power by 32.95%, 63.18%, and 78.81% compared with the benchmarks.
