Facing the complex marine environment, it is extremely challenging to conduct underwater acoustic target recognition (UATR) using ship-radiated noise. Inspired by neural mechanism of auditory perception, this paper provides a new deep neural network trained by original underwater acoustic signals with depthwise separable convolution (DWS) and time-dilated convolution neural network, named auditory perception inspired time-dilated convolution neural network (ATCNN), and then implements detection and classification for underwater acoustic signals. The proposed ATCNN model consists of learnable features extractor and integration layer inspired by auditory perception, and time-dilated convolution inspired by language model. This paper decomposes original time-domain ship-radiated noise signals into different frequency components with depthwise separable convolution filter, and then extracts signal features based on auditory perception. The deep features are integrated on integration layer. The time-dilated convolution is used for long-term contextual modeling. As a result, like language model, intra-class and inter-class information can be fully used for UATR. For UATR task, the classification accuracy reaches 90.9%, which is the highest in contrast experiment. Experimental results show that ATCNN has great potential to improve the performance of UATR classification.

We introduce asynchronous dynamic decoder, which adopts an efficient A* algorithm to incorporate big language models in the one-pass decoding for large vocabulary continuous speech recognition. Unlike standard one-pass decoding with on-the-fly composition decoder which might induce a significant computation overhead, the asynchronous dynamic decoder has a novel design where it has two fronts, with one performing exploration and the other backfill. The computation of the two fronts alternates in the decoding process, resulting in more effective pruning than the standard one-pass decoding with an on-the-fly composition decoder. Experiments show that the proposed decoder works notably faster than the standard one-pass decoding with on-the-fly composition decoder, while the acceleration will be more obvious with the increment of data complexity.
This paper describes an acoustic scene classification method which achieved the 4th ranking result in the IEEE AASP challenge of Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events 2016. In order to accomplish the ensuing task, several methods are explored in three aspects: feature extraction, feature transformation, and score fusion for final decision. In the part of feature extraction, several features are investigated for effective acoustic scene classification. For resolving the issue that the same sound can be heard in different places, a feature transformation is applied for better separation for classification. From these, several systems based on different feature sets are devised for classification. The final result is determined by fusing the individual systems. The method is demonstrated and validated by the experiment conducted using the Challenge database.
Target-speaker speech recognition aims to recognize target-speaker speech from noisy environments with background noise and interfering speakers. This work presents a joint framework that combines time-domain target-speaker speech extraction and Recurrent Neural Network Transducer (RNN-T). To stabilize the joint-training, we propose a multi-stage training strategy that pre-trains and fine-tunes each module in the system before joint-training. Meanwhile, speaker identity and speech enhancement uncertainty measures are proposed to compensate for residual noise and artifacts from the target speech extraction module. Compared to a recognizer fine-tuned with a target speech extraction model, our experiments show that adding the neural uncertainty module significantly reduces 17% relative Character Error Rate (CER) on multi-speaker signals with background noise. The multi-condition experiments indicate that our method can achieve 9% relative performance gain in the noisy condition while maintaining the performance in the clean condition.
Acoustic scene recordings are represented by different types of handcrafted or Neural Network-derived features. These features, typically of thousands of dimensions, are classified in state of the art approaches using kernel machines, such as the Support Vector Machines (SVM). However, the complexity of training these methods increases with the dimensionality of these input features and the size of the dataset. A solution is to map the input features to a randomized lower-dimensional feature space. The resulting random features can approximate non-linear kernels with faster linear kernel computation. In this work, we computed a set of 6,553 input features and used them to compute random features to approximate three types of kernels, Gaussian, Laplacian and Cauchy. We compared their performance using an SVM in the context of the DCASE Task 1 - Acoustic Scene Classification. Experiments show that both, input and random features outperformed the DCASE baseline by an absolute 4%. Moreover, the random features reduced the dimensionality of the input by more than three times with minimal loss of performance and by more than six times and still outperformed the baseline. Hence, random features could be employed by state of the art approaches to compute low-storage features and perform faster kernel computations.
In this work, we propose to extend a state-of-the-art multi-source localization system based on a convolutional recurrent neural network and Ambisonics signals. We significantly improve the performance of the baseline network by changing the layout between convolutional and pooling layers. We propose several configurations with more convolutional layers and smaller pooling sizes in-between, so that less information is lost across the layers, leading to a better feature extraction. In parallel, we test the systems ability to localize up to 3 sources, in which case the improved feature extraction provides the most significant boost in accuracy. We evaluate and compare these improved configurations on synthetic and real-world data. The obtained results show a quite substantial improvement of the multiple sound source localization performance over the baseline network.
