All-optical binary convolution with a photonic spiking vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) neuron is proposed and demonstrated experimentally for the first time. Optical inputs, extracted from digital images and temporally encoded using rectangular pulses, are injected in the VCSEL neuron which delivers the convolution result in the number of fast (<100 ps long) spikes fired. Experimental and numerical results show that binary convolution is achieved successfully with a single spiking VCSEL neuron and that all-optical binary convolution can be used to calculate image gradient magnitudes to detect edge features and separate vertical and horizontal components in source images. We also show that this all-optical spiking binary convolution system is robust to noise and can operate with high-resolution images. Additionally, the proposed system offers important advantages such as ultrafast speed, high energy efficiency and simple hardware implementation, highlighting the potentials of spiking photonic VCSEL neurons for high-speed neuromorphic image processing systems and future photonic spiking convolutional neural networks.

Research in photonic computing has flourished due to the proliferation of optoelectronic components on photonic integration platforms. Photonic integrated circuits have enabled ultrafast artificial neural networks, providing a framework for a new class of information processing machines. Algorithms running on such hardware have the potential to address the growing demand for machine learning and artificial intelligence, in areas such as medical diagnosis, telecommunications, and high-performance and scientific computing. In parallel, the development of neuromorphic electronics has highlighted challenges in that domain, in particular, related to processor latency. Neuromorphic photonics offers sub-nanosecond latencies, providing a complementary opportunity to extend the domain of artificial intelligence. Here, we review recent advances in integrated photonic neuromorphic systems, discuss current and future challenges, and outline the advances in science and technology needed to meet those challenges.
Software-implementation, via neural networks, of brain-inspired computing approaches underlie many important modern-day computational tasks, from image processing to speech recognition, artificial intelligence and deep learning applications. Yet, differing from real neural tissue, traditional computing architectures physically separate the core computing functions of memory and processing, making fast, efficient and low-energy brain-like computing difficult to achieve. To overcome such limitations, an attractive and alternative goal is to design direct hardware mimics of brain neurons and synapses which, when connected in appropriate networks (or neuromorphic systems), process information in a way more fundamentally analogous to that of real brains. Here we present an all-optical approach to achieving such a goal. Specifically, we demonstrate an all-optical spiking neuron device and connect it, via an integrated photonics network, to photonic synapses to deliver a small-scale all-optical neurosynaptic system capable of supervised and unsupervised learning. Moreover, we exploit wavelength division multiplexing techniques to implement a scalable circuit architecture for photonic neural networks, successfully demonstrating pattern recognition directly in the optical domain using a photonic system comprising 140 elements. Such optical implementations of neurosynaptic networks promise access to the high speed and bandwidth inherent to optical systems, which would be very attractive for the direct processing of telecommunication and visual data in the optical domain.
Despite neuromorphic engineering promises the deployment of low latency, adaptive and low power systems that can lead to the design of truly autonomous artificial agents, the development of a fully neuromorphic artificial agent is still missing. While neuromorphic sensing and perception, as well as decision-making systems, are now mature, the control and actuation part is lagging behind. In this paper, we present a closed-loop motor controller implemented on mixed-signal analog-digital neuromorphic hardware using a spiking neural network. The network performs a proportional control action by encoding target, feedback, and error signals using a spiking relational network. It continuously calculates the error through a connectivity pattern, which relates the three variables by means of feed-forward connections. Recurrent connections within each population are used to speed up the convergence, decrease the effect of mismatch and improve selectivity. The neuromorphic motor controller is interfaced with the iCub robot simulator. We tested our spiking P controller in a single joint control task, specifically for the robot head yaw. The spiking controller sends the target positions, reads the motor state from its encoder, and sends back the motor commands to the joint. The performance of the spiking controller is tested in a step response experiment and in a target pursuit task. In this work, we optimize the network structure to make it more robust to noisy inputs and device mismatch, which leads to better control performances.
Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) offer a promising alternative to conventional Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for the implementation of on-device low-power online learning and inference. On-device training is, however, constrained by the limited amount of data available at each device. In this paper, we propose to mitigate this problem via cooperative training through Federated Learning (FL). To this end, we introduce an online FL-based learning rule for networked on-device SNNs, which we refer to as FL-SNN. FL-SNN leverages local feedback signals within each SNN, in lieu of backpropagation, and global feedback through communication via a base station. The scheme demonstrates significant advantages over separate training and features a flexible trade-off between communication load and accuracy via the selective exchange of synaptic weights.
We report experimentally and in theory on the detection of edge information in digital images using ultrafast spiking optical artificial neurons towards convolutional neural networks (CNNs). In tandem with traditional convolution techniques, a photonic neuron model based on a Vertical-Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) is implemented experimentally to threshold and activate fast spiking responses upon the detection of target edge features in digital images. Edges of different directionalities are detected using individual kernel operators and complete image edge detection is achieved using gradient magnitude. Importantly, the neuromorphic (brain-like) image edge detection system of this work uses commercially sourced VCSELs exhibiting spiking responses at sub-nanosecond rates (many orders of magnitude faster than biological neurons) and operating at the telecom wavelength of 1300 nm; hence making our approach compatible with optical communication and data-center technologies. These results therefore have exciting prospects for ultrafast photonic implementations of neural networks towards computer vision and decision making systems for future artificial intelligence applications.
