Measuring the geographical distribution of economic activity plays a key role in scientific research and policymaking. However, previous studies and data on economic activity either have a coarse spatial resolution or cover a limited time span, and the high-resolution characteristics of socioeconomic dynamics are largely unknown. Here, we construct a dataset on the economic activity of mainland China, the gridded establishment dataset (GED), which measures the volume of establishments at a 0.01$^{circ}$ latitude by 0.01$^{circ}$ longitude scale. Specifically, our dataset captures the geographically based opening and closing of approximately 25.5 million firms that registered in mainland China over the period 2005-2015. The characteristics of fine granularity and long-term observability give the GED a high application value. The dataset not only allows us to quantify the spatiotemporal patterns of the establishments, urban vibrancy and socioeconomic activity, but also helps us uncover the fundamental principles underlying the dynamics of industrial and economic development.

To contain the pandemic of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Mainland China, the authorities have put in place a series of measures, including quarantines, social distancing, and travel restrictions. While these strategies have effectively dealt with the critical situations of outbreaks, the combination of the pandemic and mobility controls has slowed Chinas economic growth, resulting in the first quarterly decline of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) since GDP began to be calculated, in 1992. To characterize the potential shrinkage of the domestic economy, from the perspective of mobility, we propose two new economic indicators: the New Venues Created (NVC) and the Volumes of Visits to Venue (V^3), as the complementary measures to domestic investments and consumption activities, using the data of Baidu Maps. The historical records of these two indicators demonstrated strong correlations with the past figures of Chinese GDP, while the status quo has dramatically changed this year, due to the pandemic. We hereby presented a quantitative analysis to project the impact of the pandemic on economies, using the recent trends of NVC and V^3. We found that the most affected sectors would be travel-dependent businesses, such as hotels, educational institutes, and public transportation, while the sectors that are mandatory to human life, such as workplaces, residential areas, restaurants, and shopping sites, have been recovering rapidly. Analysis at the provincial level showed that the self-sufficient and self-sustainable economic regions, with internal supplies, production, and consumption, have recovered faster than those regions relying on global supply chains.
Governments have long standing interests in preventing market failures and enhancing innovation in strategic industries. Public policy regarding domestic technology is critical to both national security and economic prosperity. Governments often seek to enhance their global competitiveness by promoting private sector cooperative activity at the inter-organizational level. Research on network governance has illuminated the structure of boundary-spanning collaboration mainly for programs with immediate public or non-profit objectives. Far less research has examined how governments might accelerate private sector cooperation to prevent market failures or to enhance innovation. The theoretical contribution of this research is to suggest that government programs might catalyze cooperative activity by accelerating the preferential attachment mechanism inherent in social networks. We analyze the long-term effects of a government program on the strategic alliance network of 451 organizations in the high-tech semiconductor industry between 1987 and 1999, using stochastic network analysis methods for longitudinal social networks.
Understanding how the magnetic activity of low-mass stars depends on their fundamental parameters is an important goal of stellar astrophysics. Previous studies show that activity levels are largely determined by the stellar Rossby number which is defined as the rotation period divided by the convective turnover time. However, we currently have little information on the role that chemical composition plays. In this work, we investigate how metallicity affects magnetic activity using photometric variability as an activity proxy. Similarly to other proxies, we demonstrate that the amplitude of photometric variability is well parameterised by the Rossby number, although in a more complex way. We also show that variability amplitude and metallicity are generally positively correlated. This trend can be understood in terms of the effect that metallicity has on stellar structure and, hence, the convective turnover time (or, equivalently, the Rossby number). Lastly, we demonstrate that the metallicity dependence of photometric variability results in a rotation period detection bias whereby the periods of metal-rich stars are more easily recovered for stars of a given mass.

The forecasting of political, economic, and public health indicators using internet activity has demonstrated mixed results. For example, while some measures of explicitly surveyed public opinion correlate well with social media proxies, the opportunity for profitable investment strategies to be driven solely by sentiment extracted from social media appears to have expired. Nevertheless, the internets space of potentially predictive input signals is combinatorially vast and will continue to invite careful exploration. Here, we combine unemployment related search data from Google Trends with economic language on Twitter to attempt to nowcast and forecast: 1. State and national unemployment claims for the US, and 2. Consumer confidence in G7 countries. Building off of a recently developed search-query-based model, we show that incorporating Twitter data improves forecasting of unemployment claims, while the original method remains marginally better at nowcasting. Enriching the input signal with temporal statistical features (e.g., moving average and rate of change) further reduces errors, and improves the predictive utility of the proposed method when applied to other economic indices, such as consumer confidence.
Recent technological changes have increased connectivity between individuals around the world leading to higher frequency interactions between members of communities that would be otherwise distant and disconnected. This paper examines a model of opinion dynamics in interacting communities and studies how increasing interaction frequency affects the ability for communities to retain distinct identities versus falling into consensus or polarized states in which community identity is lost. We also study the effect (if any) of opinion noise related to a tendency for individuals to assert their individuality in homogenous populations. Our work builds on a model we developed previously [11] where the dynamics of opinion change is based on individual interactions that seek to minimize some energy potential based on the differences between opinions across the population.
