We consider ensemble averaged theories with discrete random variables. We propose a suitable measure to do the ensemble average. We also provide a mathematical description of such ensemble averages of theories in terms of Poisson point processes. Moreover, we demonstrate that averaging theories of this type has an equivalent description as tracing over parts of the microscopic degrees of freedom in a suitable continuous limit of a single microscopic theory. The results from both approaches can be identified with Liouville gravity, of which we further address some implications on the microscopic theory, including venues to look for quantum effects from the view point of the averaged theory. Generalizations to other point processes are also discussed.
We discuss ensemble averages of two-dimensional conformal field theories associated with an arbitrary indefinite lattice with integral quadratic form $Q$. We provide evidence that the holographic dual after the ensemble average is the three-dimensional Abelian Chern-Simons theory with kinetic term determined by $Q$. The resulting partition function can be written as a modular form, expressed as a sum over the partition functions of Chern-Simons theories on lens spaces. For odd lattices, the dual bulk theory is a spin Chern-Simons theory, and we identify several novel phenomena in this case. We also discuss the holographic duality prior to averaging in terms of Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories.
The asymptotic (non)equivalence of canonical and microcanonical ensembles, describing systems with soft and hard constraints respectively, is a central concept in statistical physics. Traditionally, the breakdown of ensemble equivalence (EE) has been associated with nonvanishing relative canonical fluctuations of the constraints in the thermodynamic limit. Recently, it has been reformulated in terms of a nonvanishing relative entropy density between microcanonical and canonical probabilities. The earliest observations of EE violation required phase transitions or long-range interactions. More recent research on binary networks found that an extensive number of local constraints can also break EE, even in absence of phase transitions. Here we study for the first time ensemble nonequivalence in weighted networks with local constraints. Unlike their binary counterparts, these networks can undergo a form of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) producing a core-periphery structure where a finite fraction of the link weights concentrates in the core. This phenomenon creates a unique setting where local constraints coexist with a phase transition. We find surviving relative fluctuations only in the condensed phase, as in more traditional BEC settings. However, we also find a non-vanishing relative entropy density for all temperatures, signalling a breakdown of EE due to the presence of an extensive number of constraints, irrespective of BEC. Therefore, in presence of extensively many local constraints, vanishing relative fluctuations no longer guarantee EE.
We introduce constellation ensembles, in which charged particles on a line (or circle) are linked with charged particles on parallel lines (or concentric circles). We present formulas for the partition functions of these ensembles in terms of either the Hyperpfaffian or the Berezin integral of an appropriate alternating tensor. Adjusting the distances between these lines (or circles) gives an interpolation between a pair of limiting ensembles, such as one-dimensional $beta$-ensembles with $beta=K$ and $beta=K^2$.
Some AdS$_3 times M_7$ type IIB vacua have been recently proposed to arise from D3-branes wrapped on a spindle, a sphere with conical singularities at the poles. We explicitly construct a generalization of these solutions corresponding to a class of electrically charged and rotating supersymmetric black strings in AdS$_5 times S^5$ with general magnetic fluxes on the spindle. We then perform a counting of their microstates using the charged Cardy formula. To this purpose, we derive the general form of the anomaly polynomial of the dual $mathcal{N} = (0 , 2)$ CFT in two dimensions and we show that it can be obtained via a simple gluing procedure.
