Recent work predicted the existence of isotropic chiral phonon dispersion relations of the lowest bands connected to isotropic acoustical activity in cubic crystalline approximants of 3D chiral icosahedral metamaterial quasicrystals. While these architectures are fairly broadband and presumably robust against fabrication tolerances due to orientation averaging, they are extremely complex, very hard to manufacture experimentally, and they show effects which are about an order of magnitude smaller compared to those of ordinary highly anisotropic chiral cubic metamaterial crystals. Here, we propose and analyze a chiral triclinic metamaterial crystal exhibiting broadband isotropic acoustical activity. These 3D truss lattices are much less complex and exhibit substantially larger effects than the 3D quasicrystals at the price of being somewhat more susceptible to fabrication tolerances. This susceptibility originates from the fact that we have tailored the lowest two transverse phonon bands to exhibit an accidental degeneracy in momentum space.

Motivated by the theoretical observation that isotropic chirality can exist even in completely random systems, we design a dielectric metamaterial consisting of a random colloid of meta-atoms, which exhibits unprecedentedly high isotropic optical activity. Each meta-atom is composed of a helically arranged cluster of silicon nanospheres. Such clusters can be fabricated by large-scale DNA self-assembly techniques. It is demonstrated that the use of a high concentration of the meta-atoms in the colloid provides significant suppressions of incoherent scattering losses. As a result, the proposed system shows three orders of magnitude improvement of isotropic optical activity as compared with the previous metamaterial designs. This work highlights the significant potential of completely random system, which are commonly produced in colloidal sciences, for applications as metamaterials towards novel photonic effects and devices.

We demonstrate numerically and experimentally a conjugated gammadion chiral metamaterial that uniaxially exhibits huge optical activity and circular dichroism, and gives a negative refractive index. This chiral design provides smaller unit cell size and larger chirality compared with other published planar designs. Experiments are performed at GHz frequencies (around 6GHz) and in good agreement with the numerical simulations.

In materials chiral fermions such as Weyl fermions are characterized by nonzero chiral charges, which are singular points of Berry curvature in momentum space. Recently, new types of chiral fermions beyond Weyl fermions have been discovered in structurally chiral crystals CoSi, RhSi and PtAl. Here, we have synthesized RhSn single crystals, which have opposite structural chirality to the CoSi crystals we previously studied. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we show that the bulk electronic structures of RhSn are consistent with the band calculations and observe evident surface Fermi arcs and helical surface bands, confirming the existence of chiral fermions in RhSn. It is noteworthy that the helical surface bands of the RhSn and CoSi crystals have opposite handedness, meaning that the chiral fermions are reversed in the crystals of opposite structural chirality. Our discovery establishes a direct connection between chiral fermions in momentum space and chiral lattices in real space.
Active fluids are intrinsically out-of-equilibrium systems due to the internal energy injection of the active constituents. We show here that a transition from a motion-less isotropic state towards a flowing polar one can be possibly driven by the sole active injection through the action of polar-hydrodynamic interactions in absence of an ad hoc free-energy which favors the development of an ordered phase. In particular, we propose an analytical argument and we perform lattice Boltzmann simulations where the appearance of large temporal fluctuations in the polar fraction of the system is observed at the transition point. Moreover, we make use of a scale-to-scale analysis to unveil the energy transfer mechanism, proving that elastic absorption plays a relevant role in the overall dynamics of the system, contrary to what reported in previous works on the usual active gel theory where this term could be factually neglected.
Chiral phonons are the ones with nonzero polarization and can be observed only via a selective coupling with valley electrons and circularly polarized photons. In such process, a new physical quantity, i.e., pseudo-angular momentum (PAM), is required to meet the selection rule. However, phonon PAM was thought to be quantized and can be only defined in the symmorphic systems. In this work, we generalized the definition of PAM to three-dimensional non-symmorphic systems, which show distinct different properties compared with the one in symmorphic systems, e.g., PAM can be non-quantized and q-dependent but still be an observable quantity by experiments. Such new definitions and discoveries can help us to obtain chiral phonons in a broader class of systems with a nonzero group velocity and to convey information like chirality and angular momentum in solids as expected. Materials are also offered to understand the new definition and for further experimental detection.
