Accurate tracking of the internal electrochemical states of lithium-ion battery during cycling enables advanced battery management systems to operate the battery safely and maintain high performance while minimizing battery degradation. To this end, techniques based on voltage measurement have shown promise for estimating the lithium surface concentration of active material particles, which is an important state for avoiding aging mechanisms such as lithium plating. However, methods relying on voltage often lead to large estimation errors when the model parameters change during aging. In this paper, we utilize the in-situ measurement of the battery expansion to augment the voltage and develop an observer to estimate the lithium surface concentration distribution in each electrode particle. We demonstrate that the addition of the expansion signal enables us to correct the negative electrode concentration states in addition to the positive electrode. As a result, compared to a voltage only observer, the proposed observer can successfully recover the surface concentration when the electrodes stoichiometric window changes, which is a common occurrence under aging by loss of lithium inventory. With a 5% shift in the electrodes stoichiometric window, the results indicate a reduction in state estimation error for the negative electrode surface concentration. Under this simulated aged condition, the voltage based observer had 9.3% error as compared to the proposed voltage and expansion observer which had 0.1% error in negative electrode surface concentration.
We study the problem of estimating the parameters (i.e., infection rate and recovery rate) governing the spread of epidemics in networks. Such parameters are typically estimated by measuring various characteristics (such as the number of infected and recovered individuals) of the infected populations over time. However, these measurements also incur certain costs, depending on the population being tested and the times at which the tests are administered. We thus formulate the epidemic parameter estimation problem as an optimization problem, where the goal is to either minimize the total cost spent on collecting measurements, or to optimize the parameter estimates while remaining within a measurement budget. We show that these problems are NP-hard to solve in general, and then propose approximation algorithms with performance guarantees. We validate our algorithms using numerical examples.
Parameters of the mathematical model describing many practical dynamical systems are prone to vary due to aging or renewal, wear and tear, as well as changes in environmental or service conditions. These variabilities will adversely affect the accuracy of state estimation. In this paper, we introduce SSUE: Simultaneous State and Uncertainty Estimation for quantifying parameter uncertainty while simultaneously estimating the internal state of a system. Our approach involves the development of a Bayesian framework that recursively updates the posterior joint density of the unknown state vector and parameter uncertainty. To execute the framework for practical implementation, we develop a computational algorithm based on maximum a posteriori estimation and the numerical Newtons method. Observability analysis is conducted for linear systems, and its relation with the consistency of the estimation of the uncertaintys location is unveiled. Additional simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed SSUE approach.
State and parameter estimation is essential for process monitoring and control. Observability plays an important role in both state and parameter estimation. In simultaneous state and parameter estimation, the parameters are often augmented as extra states of the original system. When the augmented system is observable, various existing state estimation approaches may be used to estimate the states and parameters simultaneously. However, when the augmented system is not observable, how we should proceed to maximally extract the information contained in the measured outputs is not clear. This paper concerns about simultaneous state and parameter estimation when the augmented system is not fully observable. Specifically, we first show how sensitivity analysis is related to observability of a dynamical system, and then illustrate how it may be used to select variables for simultaneous estimation. We also propose a moving horizon state estimation (MHE) design that can use the variable selection results in a natural way. Extensive simulations are carried out to show the efficiency of the proposed approach.
The development of advanced closed-loop irrigation systems requires accurate soil moisture information. In this work, we address the problem of soil moisture estimation for the agro-hydrological systems in a robust and reliable manner. A nonlinear state-space model is established based on the discretization of the Richards equation to describe the dynamics of agro-hydrological systems. We consider that model parameters are unknown and need to be estimated together with the states simultaneously. We propose a consensus-based estimation mechanism, which comprises two main parts: 1) a distributed extended Kalman filtering algorithm used to estimate several model parameters; and 2) a distributed moving horizon estimation algorithm used to estimate the state variables and one remaining model parameter. Extensive simulations are conducted, and comparisons with existing methods are made to demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach. In particular, the proposed approach can provide accurate soil moisture estimate even when poor initial guesses of the parameters and the states are used, which can be challenging to be handled using existing algorithms.
Propulsion system electrification revolution has been undergoing in the automotive industry. The electrified propulsion system improves energy efficiency and reduces the dependence on fossil fuel. However, the batteries of electric vehicles experience degradation process during vehicle operation. Research considering both battery degradation and energy consumption in battery/ supercapacitor electric vehicles is still lacking. This study proposes a Q-learning-based strategy to minimize battery degradation and energy consumption. Besides Q-learning, two heuristic energy management methods are also proposed and optimized using Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm. A vehicle propulsion system model is first presented, where the severity factor battery degradation model is considered and experimentally validated with the help of Genetic Algorithm. In the results analysis, Q-learning is first explained with the optimal policy map after learning. Then, the result from a vehicle without ultracapacitor is used as the baseline, which is compared with the results from the vehicle with ultracapacitor using Q-learning, and two heuristic methods as the energy management strategies. At the learning and validation driving cycles, the results indicate that the Q-learning strategy slows down the battery degradation by 13-20% and increases the vehicle range by 1.5-2% compared with the baseline vehicle without ultracapacitor.
