Podcast recommendation is a growing area of research that presents new challenges and opportunities. Individuals interact with podcasts in a way that is distinct from most other media; and primary to our concerns is distinct from music consumption. We show that successful and consistent recommendations can be made by viewing users as moving through the podcast library sequentially. Recommendations for future podcasts are then made using the trajectory taken from their sequential behavior. Our experiments provide evidence that user behavior is confined to local trends, and that listening patterns tend to be found over short sequences of similar types of shows. Ultimately, our approach gives a450%increase in effectiveness over a collaborative filtering baseline.

Trajectory owner prediction is the basis for many applications such as personalized recommendation, urban planning. Although much effort has been put on this topic, the results archived are still not good enough. Existing methods mainly employ RNNs to model trajectories semantically due to the inherent sequential attribute of trajectories. However, these approaches are weak at Point of Interest (POI) representation learning and trajectory feature detection. Thus, the performance of existing solutions is far from the requirements of practical applications. In this paper, we propose a novel CNN-based Trajectory Owner Prediction (CNNTOP) method. Firstly, we connect all POI according to trajectories from all users. The result is a connected graph that can be used to generate more informative POI sequences than other approaches. Secondly, we employ the Node2Vec algorithm to encode each POI into a low-dimensional real value vector. Then, we transform each trajectory into a fixed-dimensional matrix, which is similar to an image. Finally, a CNN is designed to detect features and predict the owner of a given trajectory. The CNN can extract informative features from the matrix representations of trajectories by convolutional operations, Batch normalization, and $K$-max pooling operations. Extensive experiments on real datasets demonstrate that CNNTOP substantially outperforms existing solutions in terms of macro-Precision, macro-Recall, macro-F1, and accuracy.
It is crucial to provide compatible treatment schemes for a disease according to various symptoms at different stages. However, most classification methods might be ineffective in accurately classifying a disease that holds the characteristics of multiple treatment stages, various symptoms, and multi-pathogenesis. Moreover, there are limited exchanges and cooperative actions in disease diagnoses and treatments between different departments and hospitals. Thus, when new diseases occur with atypical symptoms, inexperienced doctors might have difficulty in identifying them promptly and accurately. Therefore, to maximize the utilization of the advanced medical technology of developed hospitals and the rich medical knowledge of experienced doctors, a Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Recommendation System (DDTRS) is proposed in this paper. First, to effectively identify disease symptoms more accurately, a Density-Peaked Clustering Analysis (DPCA) algorithm is introduced for disease-symptom clustering. In addition, association analyses on Disease-Diagnosis (D-D) rules and Disease-Treatment (D-T) rules are conducted by the Apriori algorithm separately. The appropriate diagnosis and treatment schemes are recommended for patients and inexperienced doctors, even if they are in a limited therapeutic environment. Moreover, to reach the goals of high performance and low latency response, we implement a parallel solution for DDTRS using the Apache Spark cloud platform. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DDTRS realizes disease-symptom clustering effectively and derives disease treatment recommendations intelligently and accurately.
A reciprocal recommendation problem is one where the goal of learning is not just to predict a users preference towards a passive item (e.g., a book), but to recommend the targeted user on one side another user from the other side such that a mutual interest between the two exists. The problem thus is sharply different from the more traditional items-to-users recommendation, since a good match requires meeting the preferences of both users. We initiate a rigorous theoretical investigation of the reciprocal recommendation task in a specific framework of sequential learning. We point out general limitations, formulate reasonable assumptions enabling effective learning and, under these assumptions, we design and analyze a computationally efficient algorithm that uncovers mutual likes at a pace comparable to those achieved by a clearvoyant algorithm knowing all user preferences in advance. Finally, we validate our algorithm against synthetic and real-world datasets, showing improved empirical performance over simple baselines.
Sophisticated trajectory prediction models that effectively mimic team dynamics have many potential uses for sports coaches, broadcasters and spectators. However, through experiments on soccer data we found that it can be surprisingly challenging to train a deep learning model for player trajectory prediction which outperforms linear extrapolation on average distance between predicted and true future trajectories. We propose and test a novel method for improving training by predicting a sparse trajectory and interpolating using constant acceleration, which improves performance for several models. This interpolation can also be used on models that arent trained with sparse outputs, and we find that this consistently improves performance for all tested models. Additionally, we find that the accuracy of predicted trajectories for a subset of players can be improved by conditioning on the full trajectories of the other players, and that this is further improved when combined with sparse predictions. We also propose a novel architecture using graph networks and multi-head attention (GraN-MA) which achieves better performance than other tested state-of-the-art models on our dataset and is trivially adapted for both sparse trajectories and full-trajectory conditioned trajectory prediction.
Embedding representations power machine intelligence in many applications, including recommendation systems, but they are space intensive -- potentially occupying hundreds of gigabytes in large-scale settings. To help manage this outsized memory consumption, we explore mixed dimension embeddings, an embedding layer architecture in which a particular embedding vectors dimension scales with its query frequency. Through theoretical analysis and systematic experiments, we demonstrate that using mixed dimensions can drastically reduce the memory usage, while maintaining and even improving the ML performance. Empirically, we show that the proposed mixed dimension layers improve accuracy by 0.1% using half as many parameters or maintain it using 16X fewer parameters for click-through rate prediction task on the Criteo Kaggle dataset.
