Saliency computation models aim to imitate the attention mechanism in the human visual system. The application of deep neural networks for saliency prediction has led to a drastic improvement over the last few years. However, deep models have a high number of parameters which makes them less suitable for real-time applications. Here we propose a compact yet fast model for real-time saliency prediction. Our proposed model consists of a modified U-net architecture, a novel fully connected layer, and central difference convolutional layers. The modified U-Net architecture promotes compactness and efficiency. The novel fully-connected layer facilitates the implicit capturing of the location-dependent information. Using the central difference convolutional layers at different scales enables capturing more robust and biologically motivated features. We compare our model with state of the art saliency models using traditional saliency scores as well as our newly devised scheme. Experimental results over four challenging saliency benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in striking a balance between accuracy and speed. Our model can be run in real-time which makes it appealing for edge devices and video processing.
Image aesthetics has become an important criterion for visual content curation on social media sites and media content repositories. Previous work on aesthetic prediction models in the computer vision community has focused on aesthetic score prediction or binary image labeling. However, raw aesthetic annotations are in the form of score histograms and provide richer and more precise information than binary labels or mean scores. Consequently, in this work we focus on the rarely-studied problem of predicting aesthetic score distributions and propose a novel architecture and training procedure for our model. Our model achieves state-of-the-art results on the standard AVA large-scale benchmark dataset for three tasks: (i) aesthetic quality classification; (ii) aesthetic score regression; and (iii) aesthetic score distribution prediction, all while using one model trained only for the distribution prediction task. We also introduce a method to modify an image such that its predicted aesthetics changes, and use this modification to gain insight into our model.
This paper studies audio-visual deep saliency prediction. It introduces a conceptually simple and effective Deep Audio-Visual Embedding for dynamic saliency prediction dubbed ``DAVE in conjunction with our efforts towards building an Audio-Visual Eye-tracking corpus named ``AVE. Despite existing a strong relation between auditory and visual cues for guiding gaze during perception, video saliency models only consider visual cues and neglect the auditory information that is ubiquitous in dynamic scenes. Here, we investigate the applicability of audio cues in conjunction with visual ones in predicting saliency maps using deep neural networks. To this end, the proposed model is intentionally designed to be simple. Two baseline models are developed on the same architecture which consists of an encoder-decoder. The encoder projects the input into a feature space followed by a decoder that infers saliency. We conduct an extensive analysis on different modalities and various aspects of multi-model dynamic saliency prediction. Our results suggest that (1) audio is a strong contributing cue for saliency prediction, (2) salient visible sound-source is the natural cause of the superiority of our Audio-Visual model, (3) richer feature representations for the input space leads to more powerful predictions even in absence of more sophisticated saliency decoders, and (4) Audio-Visual model improves over 53.54% of the frames predicted by the best Visual model (our baseline). Our endeavour demonstrates that audio is an important cue that boosts dynamic video saliency prediction and helps models to approach human performance. In this work we present a new efficient approach to Human Action Recognition called Video Transformer Network (VTN). It leverages the latest advances in Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing and applies them to video understanding. The proposed method allows us to create lightweight CNN models that achieve high accuracy and real-time speed using just an RGB mono camera and general purpose CPU. Furthermore, we explain how to improve accuracy by distilling from multiple models with different modalities into a single model. We conduct a comparison with state-of-the-art methods and show that our approach performs on par with most of them on famous Action Recognition datasets. We benchmark the inference time of the models using the modern inference framework and argue that our approach compares favorably with other methods in terms of speed/accuracy trade-off, running at 56 FPS on CPU. Automatic analysis of highly crowded people has attracted extensive attention from computer vision research. Previous approaches for crowd counting have already achieved promising performance across various benchmarks. However, to deal with the real situation, we hope the model run as fast as possible while keeping accuracy. In this paper, we propose a compact convolutional neural network for crowd counting which learns a more efficient model with a small number of parameters. With three parallel filters executing the convolutional operation on the input image simultaneously at the front of the network, our model could achieve nearly real-time speed and save more computing resources. Experiments on two benchmarks show that our proposed method not only takes a balance between performance and efficiency which is more suitable for actual scenes but also is superior to existing light-weight models in speed.
Designing a lightweight semantic segmentation network often requires researchers to find a trade-off between performance and speed, which is always empirical due to the limited interpretability of neural networks. In order to release researchers from these tedious mechanical trials, we propose a Graph-guided Architecture Search (GAS) pipeline to automatically search real-time semantic segmentation networks. Unlike previous works that use a simplified search space and stack a repeatable cell to form a network, we introduce a novel search mechanism with new search space where a lightweight model can be effectively explored through the cell-level diversity and latencyoriented constraint. Specifically, to produce the cell-level diversity, the cell-sharing constraint is eliminated through the cell-independent manner. Then a graph convolution network (GCN) is seamlessly integrated as a communication mechanism between cells. Finally, a latency-oriented constraint is endowed into the search process to balance the speed and performance. Extensive experiments on Cityscapes and CamVid datasets demonstrate that GAS achieves the new state-of-the-art trade-off between accuracy and speed. In particular, on Cityscapes dataset, GAS achieves the new best performance of 73.5% mIoU with speed of 108.4 FPS on Titan Xp.
