The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is one of the promising technologies contributing to the next generation smart radio environment. A novel physics-based RIS channel model is proposed. Particularly, we consider the RIS and the scattering environment as a whole by studying the signals multipath propagation, as well as the radiation pattern of the RIS. The model suggests that the RIS-assisted wireless channel can be approximated by a Rician distribution. Analytical expressions are derived for the shape factor and the scale factor of the distribution. For the case of continuous phase shifts, the distribution depends on the number of elements of the RIS and the observing direction of the receiver. For the case of continuous phase shifts, the distribution further depends on the quantization level of the RIS phase error. The scaling law of the average received power is obtained from the scale factor of the distribution. For the application scenarios where RIS functions as an anomalous reflector, we investigate the performance of single RIS-assisted multiple access networks for time-division multiple access (TDMA), frequency-division multiple access (FDMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). Closed-form expressions for the outage probability of the proposed channel model are derived. It is proved that a constant diversity order exists, which is independent of the number of RIS elements. Simulation results are presented to confirm that the proposed model applies effectively to the phased-array implemented RISs.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising solution to enhance wireless information transmissions by adaptively controlling prorogation environment. Recently, the brand-new concept of utilizing IRS to implement a passive transmitter attracts researchers attention since it potentially realizes low-complexity and hardware-efficient transmitters of multiple-input single/multiple-output (MISO/MIMO) systems. In this paper we investigate the problem of precoder design for a low-resolution IRS-based transmitter to implement multi-user MISO/MIMO wireless communications. Particularly, the IRS modulates information symbols by varying the phases of its reflecting elements and transmits them to $K$ single-antenna or multi-antenna users. We first aim to design the symbol-level precoder for IRS to realize the modulation and minimize the maximum symbol-error-rate (SER) of single-antenna receivers. In order to tackle this NP-hard problem, we first relax the low-resolution phase-shift constraint and solve this problem by Riemannian conjugate gradient (RCG) algorithm. Then, the low-resolution symbol-level precoding vector is obtained by direct quantization. Considering the large quantization error for 1-bit resolution case, the branch-and-bound method is utilized to solve the 1-bit resolution symbol-level precoding vector. For multi-antenna receivers, we propose to iteratively design the symbol-level precoder and combiner by decomposing the original large-scale optimization problem into several sub-problems. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms.
In the recent years, the proliferation of wireless data traffic has led the scientific community to explore the use of higher unallocated frequency bands, such as the millimeter wave and terahertz (0.1-10 THz) bands. However, they are prone to blockages from obstacles laid in the transceiver path. To address this, in this work, the use of a reconfigurable-intelligent-surface (RIS) to restore the link between a transmitter (TX) and a receiver (RX), operating in the D-band (110-170 GHz) is investigated. The system performance is evaluated in terms of pathgain and capacity considering the RIS design parameters, the TX/RX-RIS distance and the elevation angles from the center of the RIS to the transceivers.
The received signal strength (RSS) based technique is extensively utilized for localization in the indoor environments. Since the RSS values of neighboring locations may be similar, the localization accuracy of the RSS based technique is limited. To tackle this problem, in this paper, we propose to utilize reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) for the RSS based multi-user localization. As the RIS is able to customize the radio channels by adjusting the phase shifts of the signals reflected at the surface, the localization accuracy in the RIS aided scheme can be improved by choosing the proper phase shifts with significant differences of RSS values among adjacent locations. However, it is challenging to select the optimal phase shifts because the decision function for location estimation and the phase shifts are coupled. To tackle this challenge, we formulate the optimization problem for the RIS-aided localization, derive the optimal decision function, and design the phase shift optimization (PSO) algorithm to solve the formulated problem efficiently. Analysis of the proposed RIS aided technique is provided, and the effectiveness is validated through simulation.
This paper presents an analytical pathloss model for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted terahertz (THz) wireless systems. Specifically, the model accommodates both the THz link and the RIS particularities. Finally, we derive a closed-form expression that returns the optimal phase shifting of each RIS reflection unit. The derived pathloss model is validated through extensive electromagnetic simulations and is expected to play a key role in the design of RIS-assisted THz wireless systems.
This paper presents the analytic framework for evaluating the ergodic capacity (EC) of the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted systems. Moreover, high-signal-to-noise-ratio and high-number of reflection units (RUs) approximations for the EC are provided. Finally, the special case in which the RIS is equipped with a single RU is investigated. Our analysis is verified through respective Monte Carlo simulations, which highlight the accuracy of the proposed framework.
