Dense small satellite networks (DSSN) in low earth orbits (LEO) can benefit several mobile terrestrial communication systems (MTCS). However, the potential benefits can only be achieved through careful consideration of DSSN infrastructure and identification of suitable DSSN technologies. In this paper, we discuss several components of DSSN infrastructure including satellite formations, orbital paths, inter-satellite communication (ISC) links, and communication architectures for data delivery from source to destination. We also review important technologies for DSSN as well as the challenges involved in the use of these technologies in DSSN. Several open research directions to enhance the benefits of DSSN for MTCS are also identified in the paper. A case study showing the integration benefits of DSSN in MTCS is also included.

Synchronization and ranging in internet of things (IoT) networks are challenging due to the narrowband nature of signals used for communication between IoT nodes. Recently, several estimators for range estimation using phase difference of arrival (PDoA) measurements of narrowband signals have been proposed. However, these estimators are based on data models which do not consider the impact of clock-skew on the range estimation. In this paper, clock-skew and range estimation are studied under a unified framework. We derive a novel and precise data model for PDoA measurements which incorporates the unknown clock-skew effects. We then formulate joint estimation of the clock-skew and range as a two-dimensional (2-D) frequency estimation problem of a single complex sinusoid. Furthermore, we propose: (i) a two-way communication protocol for collecting PDoA measurements and (ii) a weighted least squares (WLS) algorithm for joint estimation of clock-skew and range leveraging the shift invariance property of the measurement data. Finally, through numerical experiments, the performance of the proposed protocol and estimator is compared against the Cramer Rao lower bound demonstrating that the proposed estimator is asymptotically efficient.

The scarcity of spectrum resources in current wireless communication systems has sparked enormous research interest in the terahertz (THz) frequency band. This band is characterized by fundamentally different propagation properties resulting in different interference structures from what we have observed so far at lower frequencies. In this paper, we derive a new expression for the coverage probability of downlink transmission in THz communication systems within a three-dimensional (3D) environment. First, we establish a 3D propagation model which considers the molecular absorption loss, 3D directional antennas at both access points (APs) and user equipments (UEs), interference from nearby APs, and dynamic blockages caused by moving humans. Then, we develop a novel easy-to-use analytical framework based on the dominant interferer analysis to evaluate the coverage probability, the novelty of which lies in the incorporation of the instantaneous interference and the vertical height of THz devices. Our numerical results demonstrate the accuracy of our analysis and reveal that the coverage probability significantly decreases when the transmission distance increases. We also show the increasing blocker density and increasing AP density impose different impacts on the coverage performance when the UE-AP link of interest is in line-of-sight. We further show that the coverage performance improvement brought by increasing the antenna directivity at APs is higher than that brought by increasing the antenna directivity at UEs.
Channel estimation is of crucial importance in massive multiple-input multiple-output (m-MIMO) visible light communication (VLC) systems. In order to tackle this problem, a fast and flexible denoising convolutional neural network (FFDNet)-based channel estimation scheme for m-MIMO VLC systems was proposed. The channel matrix of the m-MIMO VLC channel is identified as a two-dimensional natural image since the channel has the characteristic of sparsity. A deep learning-enabled image denoising network FFDNet is exploited to learn from a large number of training data and to estimate the m-MIMO VLC channel. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed channel estimation based on the FFDNet significantly outperforms the benchmark scheme based on minimum mean square error.
In this study, we analyze index modulation (IM) based on circularly-shifted chirps (CSCs) for dual-function radar & communication (DFRC) systems. We develop a maximum likelihood (ML) range estimator that considers multiple scatters. To improve the correlation properties of the transmitted waveform and estimation accuracy, we propose index separation (IS) which separates the CSCs apart in time. We theoretically show that the separation can be large under certain conditions without losing the spectral efficiency (SE). Our numerical results show that the IS combined ML and linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE)-based estimators can provide approximately 3 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain in some cases while improving estimation accuracy substantially without causing any bit-error ratio (BER) degradation at the communication receiver.
The recent development of high-altitude platforms (HAPs) has attracted increasing attention since they can serve as a promising communication method to assist satellite-terrestrial networks. In this paper, we consider an integrated three-layer satellite-HAP-terrestrial network where the HAP support dual-band connectivity. Specifically, the HAP can not only communicate with terrestrial users over C-band directly, but also provide backhaul services to terrestrial user terminals over Ka-band. We formulate a sum-rate maximization problem and then propose a fractional programming based algorithm to solve the problem by optimizing the bandwidth and power allocation iteratively. The closed-form optimal solutions for bandwidth allocation and power allocation in each iteration are also derived. Simulation results show the capacity enhancement brought by the dual-band connectivity of the HAP. The influence of the power of the HAP and the power of the satellite is also discussed.
