We investigate the evolution of the Mott insulators in the triangular lattice Hubbard Model, as a function of hole doping $delta$ in both the strong and intermediate coupling limit. Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, at light hole doping $deltalesssim 10%$, we find a significant difference between strong and intermediate couplings. Notably, at intermediate coupling an unusual metallic state emerges, with short ranged spin correlations but long ranged spin-chirality order. Moreover, no clear Fermi surface or wave-vector is observed. These features disappear on increasing interaction strength or on further doping. At strong coupling, the 120 degree magnetic order of the insulating magnet persists for light doping, and produces hole pockets with a well defined Fermi surface. On further doping, $delta approx 10%sim 20%$ SDW order and coherent hole Fermi pockets are found at both strong and intermediate coupling. At even higher doping $delta gtrsim 20%$, the SDW order is suppressed and the spin-singlet Cooper pair correlations are simultaneously enhanced. We interpret this as the onset of superconductivity on suppressing magnetic order. We also briefly comment on the strong particle hole asymmetry of the model, and contrast electron versus hole doping.

The physics of the triangular lattice Hubbard model exhibits a rich phenomenology, ranging from a metal-insulator transition, intriguing thermodynamic behavior, and a putative spin liquid phase at intermediate coupling, ultimately becoming a magnetic insulator at strong coupling. In this multi-method study, we combine a finite-temperature tensor network method, minimally entangled thermal typical states (METTS), with two Green function-based methods, connected-determinant diagrammatic Monte Carlo (DiagMC) and cellular dynamical mean-field theory (CDMFT), to establish several aspects of this model. We elucidate the evolution from the metallic to the insulating regime from the complementary perspectives brought by these different methods. We compute the full thermodynamics of the model on a width-4 cylinder using METTS in the intermediate to strong coupling regime. We find that the insulating state hosts a large entropy at intermediate temperatures, which increases with the strength of the coupling. Correspondingly, and consistently with a thermodynamic Maxwell relation, the double occupancy has a minimum as a function of temperature which is the manifestation of the Pomeranchuk effect of increased localisation upon heating. The intermediate coupling regime is found to exhibit both pronounced chiral as well as stripy antiferromagnetic spin correlations. We propose a scenario in which time-reversal symmetry broken states compete with nematic, lattice rotational symmetry breaking orders at lowest temperatures.

We study magnetic and charge susceptibilities in the half-filled two-dimensional triangular Hubbard model within the dual fermion approximation in the metallic, Mott insulating, and crossover regions of parameter space. In the textcolor{black}{insulating state}, we find strong spin fluctuations at the K point at low energy corresponding to the textcolor{black}{120$^{circ}$} antiferromagnetic order. These spin fluctuations persist into the metallic phase and move to higher energy. We also present data for simulated neutron spectroscopy and textcolor{black}{spin-lattice} relaxation times, and perform direct comparisons to inelastic neutron spectroscopy experiments on the triangular material Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$ and to the relaxation times on $kappa$-(ET)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$. Finally, we present charge susceptibilities in different areas of parameter space, which should correspond to momentum-resolved electron-loss spectroscopy measurements on triangular compounds.
We study the half-filled Hubbard model on the triangular lattice with spin-dependent Kitaev-like hopping. Using the variational cluster approach, we identify five phases: a metallic phase, a non-coplanar chiral magnetic order, a $120^circ$ magnetic order, a nonmagnetic insulator (NMI), and an interacting Chern insulator (CI) with a nonzero Chern number. The transition from CI to NMI is characterized by the change of the charge gap from an indirect band gap to a direct Mott gap. Based on the slave-rotor mean-field theory, the NMI phase is further suggested to be a gapless Mott insulator with a spinon Fermi surface or a fractionalized CI with nontrivial spinon topology, depending on the strength of Kitaev-like hopping. Our work highlights the rising field that interesting phases emerge from the interplay of band topology and Mott physics.
We propose a novel quantum spin liquid state that can explain many of the intriguing experimental properties of the low-temperature phase of the organic spin liquid candidate materials. This state of paired fermionic spinons preserves all symmetries of the system, and it has a gapless excitation spectrum with quadratic bands that touch at momentum ~ k = 0. This quadratic band touching is protected by the symmetry of the system. Using variational Monte Carlo techniques, we show that this state has highly competitive energy in the triangular lattice Heisenberg model supplemented with a realistically large ring-exchange term.

We demonstrate that the sign structure of the t-J model on a hypercubic lattice is entirely different from that of a Fermi gas, by inspecting the high temperature expansion of the partition function up to all orders, as well as the multi-hole propagator of the half-filled state and the perturbative expansion of the ground state energy. We show that while the fermion signs can be completely gauged away by a Marshall sign transformation at half-filling, the bulk of the signs can be also gauged away in a doped case, leaving behind a rarified irreducible sign structure that can be enumerated easily by counting exchanges of holes with themselves and spins on their real space paths. Such a sparse sign structure implies a mutual statistics for the quantum states of the doped Mott insulator.
