We derive and test an approximation for the angular power spectrum of galaxy number counts in the flat sky limit. The standard density and redshift space distortion (RSD) terms in the resulting approximation are distinct to the Limber approximation, providing an accurate result for multipoles as low as $ellsimeq10$, where the corresponding Limber approximation is completely inaccurate. At equal redshift the accuracy of the density and RSD (standard) terms is around 0.2% for $z<3$ and 0.5% at $z=5$, even to $ell<50$. At unequal redshifts, if we consider the total power spectrum, the precision is better than 5% only for very small redshift differences, $delta <delta_0 (simeq 3.6times10^{-4}(1+z)^{2.14})$ where the standard terms are well-approximated, or for large enough redshift differences $delta >delta_1 (simeq 0.33(r(z)H(z))/(z+1))$ where the lensing terms dominate. The flat sky expressions for the pure lensing and the lensing-density cross-correlation terms are equivalent to the Limber approximation. For arbitrary redshift differences, the Limber approximation achieves an accuracy of 0.5% (above $ellsimeq 40$ for pure lensing and $ellsimeq 80$ for density-lensing). Besides being very accurate, the flat sky approximation is computationally much simpler and can therefore be very useful for data analysis and forecasts with MCMC methods. This will be particularly crucial for upcoming galaxy surveys that will measure the power spectrum of galaxy number counts.

We present a detailed derivation of the observed galaxy number over-density on cosmological scales up to second order in perturbation theory. We include all relativistic effects that arise from observing on the past lightcone. The derivation is in a general gauge, and applies to all dark energy models (including interacting dark energy) and many modified gravity models. The result will be important for accurate cosmological parameter estimation, including non-Gaussianity, since all projection effects need to be taken into account. It also offers the potential for new probes of General Relativity, dark energy and modified gravity. This paper accompanies Paper I which presents the key results for the concordance model in Poisson gauge.

We present the galaxy number overdensity up to second order in redshift space on cosmological scales for a concordance model. The result contains all general relativistic effects up to second order that arise from observing on the past light cone, including all redshift effects, lensing distortions from convergence and shear, and contributions from velocities, Sachs-Wolfe, integrated SW and time-delay terms. This result will be important for accurate calculation of the bias on estimates of non-Gaussianity and on precision parameter estimates, introduced by nonlinear projection effects.

We study up to second order the galaxy number over-density that depends on magnification in redshift space on cosmological scales for a concordance model. The result contains all general relativistic effects up to second order which arise from observing on the past light cone, including all redshift and lensing distortions, contributions from velocities, Sachs-Wolfe, integrated SW and time-delay terms. We find several new terms and contributions that could be potentially important for an accurate calculation of the bias on estimates of non-Gaussianity and on precision parameter estimates.
Next generation surveys will be capable of determining cosmological parameters beyond percent level. To match this precision, theoretical descriptions should look beyond the linear perturbations to approximate the observables in large scale structure. A quantity of interest is the Number density of galaxies detected by our instruments. This has been focus of interest recently, and several efforts have been made to explain relativistic effects theoretically, thereby testing the full theory. However, the results at nonlinear level from previous works are in disagreement. We present a new and independent approach to computing the relativistic galaxy number counts to second order in cosmological perturbation theory. We derive analytical expressions for the full second order relativistic observed redshift, for the angular diameter distance and for the volume spanned by a survey. Finally, we compare our results with previous works which compute the general distance-redshift relation, finding that our result is in agreement at linear order.
In this paper we investigate the potential of current and upcoming cosmological surveys to constrain the mass and abundance of ultra-light axion (ULA) cosmologies with galaxy cluster number counts. ULAs, sometimes also referred to as Fuzzy Dark Matter, are well-motivated in many theories beyond the Standard Model and could potentially solve the $Lambda$CDM small-scale crisis. Galaxy cluster counts provide a robust probe of the formation of structures in the Universe. Their distribution in mass and redshift is strongly sensitive to the underlying linear matter perturbations. In this forecast paper we explore two scenarios, firstly an exclusion limit on axion mass given a no-axion model and secondly constraints on an axion model. With this we obtain lower limits on the ULA mass on the order of $m_a gtrsim 10^{-24}$ eV. However, this result depends heavily on the mass of the smallest reliably observable clusters for a given survey. Cluster counts, like many other cosmological probes, display an approximate degeneracy in the ULA mass vs. abundance parameter space, which is dependent on the characteristics of the probe. These degeneracies are different for other cosmological probes. Hence galaxy cluster counts might provide a complementary window on the properties of ultra-light axions.
