In this study, we propose an encoder-decoder structured system with fully convolutional networks to implement voice activity detection (VAD) directly on the time-domain waveform. The proposed system processes the input waveform to identify its segments to be either speech or non-speech. This novel waveform-based VAD algorithm, with a short-hand notation WVAD, has two main particularities. First, as compared to most conventional VAD systems that use spectral features, raw-waveforms employed in WVAD contain more comprehensive information and thus are supposed to facilitate more accurate speech/non-speech predictions. Second, based on the multi-branched architecture, WVAD can be extended by using an ensemble of encoders, referred to as WEVAD, that incorporate multiple attribute information in utterances, and thus can yield better VAD performance for specified acoustic conditions. We evaluated the presented WVAD and WEVAD for the VAD task in two datasets: First, the experiments conducted on AURORA2 reveal that WVAD outperforms many state-of-the-art VAD algorithms. Next, the TMHINT task confirms that through combining multiple attributes in utterances, WEVAD behaves even better than WVAD.

Deep learning-based models have greatly advanced the performance of speech enhancement (SE) systems. However, two problems remain unsolved, which are closely related to model generalizability to noisy conditions: (1) mismatched noisy condition during testing, i.e., the performance is generally sub-optimal when models are tested with unseen noise types that are not involved in the training data; (2) local focus on specific noisy conditions, i.e., models trained using multiple types of noises cannot optimally remove a specific noise type even though the noise type has been involved in the training data. These problems are common in real applications. In this paper, we propose a novel denoising autoencoder with a multi-branched encoder (termed DAEME) model to deal with these two problems. In the DAEME model, two stages are involved: training and testing. In the training stage, we build multiple component models to form a multi-branched encoder based on a decision tree (DSDT). The DSDT is built based on prior knowledge of speech and noisy conditions (the speaker, environment, and signal factors are considered in this paper), where each component of the multi-branched encoder performs a particular mapping from noisy to clean speech along the branch in the DSDT. Finally, a decoder is trained on top of the multi-branched encoder. In the testing stage, noisy speech is first processed by each component model. The multiple outputs from these models are then integrated into the decoder to determine the final enhanced speech. Experimental results show that DAEME is superior to several baseline models in terms of objective evaluation metrics, automatic speech recognition results, and quality in subjective human listening tests.
In this work, we investigate the effectiveness of two techniques for improving variational autoencoder (VAE) based voice conversion (VC). First, we reconsider the relationship between vocoder features extracted using the high quality vocoders adopted in conventional VC systems, and hypothesize that the spectral features are in fact F0 dependent. Such hypothesis implies that during the conversion phase, the latent codes and the converted features in VAE based VC are in fact source F0 dependent. To this end, we propose to utilize the F0 as an additional input of the decoder. The model can learn to disentangle the latent code from the F0 and thus generates converted F0 dependent converted features. Second, to better capture temporal dependencies of the spectral features and the F0 pattern, we replace the frame wise conversion structure in the original VAE based VC framework with a fully convolutional network structure. Our experiments demonstrate that the degree of disentanglement as well as the naturalness of the converted speech are indeed improved.

This study proposes a fully convolutional network (FCN) model for raw waveform-based speech enhancement. The proposed system performs speech enhancement in an end-to-end (i.e., waveform-in and waveform-out) manner, which dif-fers from most existing denoising methods that process the magnitude spectrum (e.g., log power spectrum (LPS)) only. Because the fully connected layers, which are involved in deep neural networks (DNN) and convolutional neural networks (CNN), may not accurately characterize the local information of speech signals, particularly with high frequency components, we employed fully convolutional layers to model the waveform. More specifically, FCN consists of only convolutional layers and thus the local temporal structures of speech signals can be efficiently and effectively preserved with relatively few weights. Experimental results show that DNN- and CNN-based models have limited capability to restore high frequency components of waveforms, thus leading to decreased intelligibility of enhanced speech. By contrast, the proposed FCN model can not only effectively recover the waveforms but also outperform the LPS-based DNN baseline in terms of short-time objective intelligibility (STOI) and perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ). In addition, the number of model parameters in FCN is approximately only 0.2% compared with that in both DNN and CNN.

Robust voice activity detection (VAD) is a challenging task in low signal-to-noise (SNR) environments. Recent studies show that speech enhancement is helpful to VAD, but the performance improvement is limited. To address this issue, here we propose a speech enhancement aided end-to-end multi-task model for VAD. The model has two decoders, one for speech enhancement and the other for VAD. The two decoders share the same encoder and speech separation network. Unlike the direct thought that takes two separated objectives for VAD and speech enhancement respectively, here we propose a new joint optimization objective -- VAD-masked scale-invariant source-to-distortion ratio (mSI-SDR). mSI-SDR uses VAD information to mask the output of the speech enhancement decoder in the training process. It makes the VAD and speech enhancement tasks jointly optimized not only at the shared encoder and separation network, but also at the objective level. It also satisfies real-time working requirement theoretically. Experimental results show that the multi-task method significantly outperforms its single-task VAD counterpart. Moreover, mSI-SDR outperforms SI-SDR in the same multi-task setting.
An effective approach to non-parallel voice conversion (VC) is to utilize deep neural networks (DNNs), specifically variational auto encoders (VAEs), to model the latent structure of speech in an unsupervised manner. A previous study has confirmed the ef- fectiveness of VAE using the STRAIGHT spectra for VC. How- ever, VAE using other types of spectral features such as mel- cepstral coefficients (MCCs), which are related to human per- ception and have been widely used in VC, have not been prop- erly investigated. Instead of using one specific type of spectral feature, it is expected that VAE may benefit from using multi- ple types of spectral features simultaneously, thereby improving the capability of VAE for VC. To this end, we propose a novel VAE framework (called cross-domain VAE, CDVAE) for VC. Specifically, the proposed framework utilizes both STRAIGHT spectra and MCCs by explicitly regularizing multiple objectives in order to constrain the behavior of the learned encoder and de- coder. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed CD- VAE framework outperforms the conventional VAE framework in terms of subjective tests.
