We introduce a framework for analyzing and designing EIS inversion algorithms. Our framework stems from the observation of four features common to well-defined EIS inversion algorithms, namely (1) the representation of unknown distributions, (2) the minimization of a metric of error to estimate parameters arising from the chosen representation, subject to constraints on (3) the complexity control parameters, and (4) a means for choosing optimal control parameter values. These features must be present to overcome the ill-posed nature of EIS inversion problems. We review three established EIS inversion algorithms to illustrate the pervasiveness of these features, and show the utility of the framework by resolving ambiguities concerning three more algorithms. Our framework is then used to design the generalized EIS inversion (gEISi) algorithm, which uses Gaussian basis function representation, modality control parameter, and cross-validation for choosing the optimal control parameter value. The gEISi algorithm is applicable to the generalized EIS inversion problem, which allows for a wider range of underlying models. We also considered the construction of credible intervals for distributions arising from the algorithm. The algorithm is able to accurately reproduce distributions which have been difficult to obtain using existing algorithms. It is provided gratis on the repository https://github.com/suryaeff/gEISi.git.

Organic electrochemical transistors offer powerful functionalities for biosensors and neuroinspired electronics, with still much to understand on the time dependent behavior of this electrochemical device. Here, we report on distributed element modeling of the impedance of such microfabricated device, systematically performed under a large concentration variation for KCl(aq) and CaCl2(aq). We propose a new model which takes into account three main deviations to ideality, that were systematically observed, caused by both the materials and the device complexity, over large frequency range (1 Hz to 1 MHz). More than introducing more freedom degree, the introduction of these non redundant parameters and the study of their behaviors as function of the electrolyte concentration and applied voltage give a more detailed picture of the OECT working principles. This optimized model can be further useful for improving OECT performances in many applications (e.g. biosensors, neuroinspired devices) and circuit simulations.
An immobile charged species provides a charged medium for transport of charge carriers that is exploited in many applications, such as permselective membranes, doped semiconductors, biological ion channels, as well as porous media and microchannels with surface charges. In this paper, we theoretically study the electrochemical impedance of electrodiffusion in a charged medium by employing the Nernst-Planck equation and the electroneutrality condition with a background charge density. The impedance response is obtained under different dc bias conditions, extending above the diffusion-limiting bias. We find a transition in the impedance behavior around the diffusion-limiting bias, and present an analytical approximation for a weakly charged medium under an overlimiting bias.

We propose the design of an impedance matching acoustic bend in this article. The bending structure is composed of sub-wavelength unit cells with perforated plates and side pipes, whose mass density and bulk modulus can be tuned simultaneously. So the refraction index and the impedance of the acoustic bend can be modulated simultaneously to guarantee both the bending effect and the high transmission. The simulation results of sound pressure field distribution show that the bending effect of the impedance matching acoustic bend is very good. Transmission spectra of the impedance matching acoustic bend and the acoustic bend composed of perforated plates only are both calculated for comparison. The results indicate that the impedance matching acoustic bend is successful in improving the impedance ratio and increasing the transmission obviously.
Representation of dielectric properties by impedance spectroscopy (IS) is analyzed carefully in this paper. It is found that IS is not a good tool to describe a uniform system because a pseudo relaxation peaks exists at low frequency limit corresponding to direct current (DC) conductivity and two relaxation peaks appears simultaneously corresponding to one relaxation process for a high loss system with tand>1. However it is very convenient to describe a multiple phase system with IS. When dielectric properties are shown by Cole-Cole equation, only one Cole-Cole arc appears for one phase in IS, therefore it is very easy to distinguish different phases from each other. Especially, since pseudo relaxation exists at low frequency limit for each phase, the location of a certain relaxation process can be deduced by IS without any uncertainty. Furthermore, when dielectric properties are shown with specific impedance spectroscopy (ISI), the information of microstructure can be obtained conveniently. Based on the theoretical results above, dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) ceramics with giant dielectric constant (GDC) are investigated. Microstructure of CCTO is obtained by dielectric spectrometer and the origin of GDC is found to come from pseudo relaxation of grain.
In this article, we derive and discuss a physics-based model for impedance spectroscopy of lithium batteries. Our model for electrochemical cells with planar electrodes takes into account the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) as porous surface film. We present two improvements over standard impedance models. Firstly, our model is based on a consistent description of lithium transport through electrolyte and SEI. We use well-defined transport parameters, e.g., transference numbers, and consider convection of the center-of-mass. Secondly, we solve our model equations analytically and state the full transport parameter dependence of the impedance signals. Our consistent model results in an analytic expression for the cell impedance including bulk and surface processes. The impedance signals due to concentration polarizations highlight the importance of electrolyte convection in concentrated electrolytes. We simplify our expression for the complex impedance and compare it to common equivalent circuit models. Such simplified models are good approximations in concise parameter ranges. Finally, we compare our model with experiments of lithium metal electrodes and find large transference numbers for lithium ions. This analysis reveals that lithium-ion transport through the SEI has solid electrolyte character.
