After almost 20 years of hunting, only about a dozen hot corinos, hot regions enriched in interstellar complex organic molecules (iCOMs), are known. Of them, many are binary systems with the two components showing drastically different molecular spectra. Two obvious questions arise. Why are hot corinos so difficult to find and why do their binary components seem chemically different? The answer to both questions could be a high dust opacity that would hide the molecular lines. To test this hypothesis, we observed methanol lines at centimeter wavelengths, where dust opacity is negligible, using the Very Large Array interferometer. We targeted the NGC 1333 IRAS 4A binary system, for which one of the two components, 4A1, has a spectrum deprived of iCOMs lines when observed at millimeter wavelengths, while the other component, 4A2, is very rich in iCOMs. We found that centimeter methanol lines are similarly bright toward 4A1 and 4A2. Their non-LTE analysis indicates gas density and temperature ($geq2times10^6$ cm$^{-3}$ and 100--190 K), methanol column density ($sim10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$) and extent ($sim$35 au in radius) similar in 4A1 and 4A2, proving that both are hot corinos. Furthermore, the comparison with previous methanol line millimeter observations allows us to estimate the optical depth of the dust in front of 4A1 and 4A2, respectively. The obtained values explain the absence of iCOMs line emission toward 4A1 at millimeter wavelengths and indicate that the abundances toward 4A2 are underestimated by $sim$30%. Therefore, centimeter observations are crucial for the correct study of hot corinos, their census, and their molecular abundances.

We report the detection of four new hot corino sources, G211.47-19.27S, G208.68-19.20N1, G210.49-19.79W and G192.12-11.10 from a survey study of Planck Galactic Cold Clumps in the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex with the Atacama Compact Array (ACA). Three sources had been identified as low mass Class 0 protostars in the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey (HOPS). One source in the lambda Orionis region is firstly reported as a protostellar core. We have observed abundant complex organic molecules (COMs), primarily methanol but also other oxygen-bearing COMs (in G211.47-19.27S and G208.68-19.20N1) and the molecule of prebiotic interest NH2CHO (in G211.47-19.27S), signifying the presence of hot corinos. While our spatial resolution is not sufficient for resolving most of the molecular emission structure, the large linewidth and high rotational temperature of COMs suggest that they likely reside in the hotter and innermost region immediately surrounding the protostar. In G211.47-19.27S, the D/H ratio of methanol ([CH2DOH]/[CH3OH]) and the 12C/13C ratio of methanol ([CH3OH]/[13CH3OH]) are comparable to those of other hot corinos. Hydrocarbons and long carbon-chain molecules such as c-C3H2 and HCCCN are also detected in the four sources, likely tracing the outer and cooler molecular envelopes.
It has recently been argued that the inability to measure the absolute phase of an electromagnetic field prohibits the representation of a lasers output as a quantum optical coherent state. This argument has generally been considered technically correct but conceptually disturbing. Indeed, it would seem to place in question the very concept of the coherent state. Here we show that this argument fails to take into account a fundamental principle that not only re-admits the coherent state as legitimate, but formalizes a fundamental concept about model building in general, and in quantum mechanics in particular.

Self-organization has become a watchword in developmental biology, characterizing observations in which embryonic or induced stem cells replicate morphological steps and outcomes seen in intact embryos. While the term was introduced in the 18th century by the philosopher Immanuel Kant to describe the goal-directed properties of living systems, it came into modern use for non-living materials in which complex forms and patterns emerge through dynamical, energy-expending physical processes. What are the relationships among these uses of the term? While multicellular forms arose dozens of times from single-celled organisms, only some of these undergo development, and not all developmental processes are self-organizing. The evolution of the animals (metazoans) from unicellular holozoans was accompanied by the addition of novel gene products which mediated the constitution of the resulting cell clusters as liquid-, liquid crystal-, and solid-like materials with protean morphogenetic propensities. Such materials variously exhibited multilayering, lumen formation and elongation, echoing the self-organizing properties of nonliving matter, generic based on such parallels, though with biologically based subunit properties and modes of interaction. These effects provided evolutionary templates for embryonic forms and morphological motifs of diverse metazoan lineages. Embryos and organ primordia of present-day animal species continue to generate forms that resemble the outcomes of these physical effects. Their development, however, employs overdetermined, highly evolved mechanisms that are often disconnected from their originating processes. Using the examples of gastrulation, somitogenesis, and limb skeletal development, this chapter provides instances of, and a conceptual framework for understanding, the relationships between physical and evolved types of developmental self-organization.

We present high angular resolution observations (0.5x0.3) carried out with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) toward the AFGL2591 high-mass star forming region. Our SMA images reveal a clear chemical segregation within the AFGL2591 VLA 3 hot core, where different molecular species (Type I, II and III) appear distributed in three concentric shells. This is the first time that such a chemical segregation is ever reported at linear scales <3000 AU within a hot core. While Type I species (H2S and 13CS) peak at the AFGL2591 VLA 3 protostar, Type II molecules (HC3N, OCS, SO and SO2) show a double-peaked structure circumventing the continuum peak. Type III species, represented by CH3OH, form a ring-like structure surrounding the continuum emission. The excitation temperatures of SO2, HC3N and CH3OH (185+-11 K, 150+-20 K and 124+-12 K, respectively) show a temperature gradient within the AFGL2591 VLA 3 envelope, consistent with previous observations and modeling of the source. By combining the H2S, SO2 and CH3OH images, representative of the three concentric shells, we find that the global kinematics of the molecular gas follow Keplerian-like rotation around a 40 Mo-star. The chemical segregation observed toward AFGL2591 VLA 3 is explained by the combination of molecular UV photo-dissociation and a high-temperature (~1000 K) gas-phase chemistry within the low extinction innermost region in the AFGL2591 VLA 3 hot core.
Methyl formate, HCOOCH$_3$, and many of its isotopologues have been detected in astrophysical regions with considerable abundances. However, the recipe for the formation of this molecule and its isotopologues is not yet known. In this work, we attempt to investigate, theoretically, the successful recipe for the formation of interstellar HCOOCH$_3$ and its deuterated isotopologues. We used the gas-grain chemical model, UCLCHEM, to examine the possible routes of formation of methyl formate on grain surfaces and in the gas-phase in low-mass star-forming regions. Our models show that radical-radical association on grains are necessary to explain the observed abundance of DCOOCH$_3$ in the protostar IRAS~16293--2422. H-D substitution reactions on grains significantly enhance the abundances of HCOOCHD$_2$, DCOOCHD$_2$, and HCOOCD$_3$. The observed abundance of HCOOCHD$_2$ in IRAS 16293--2422 can only be reproduced if H-D substitution reactions are taken into account. However, HCOOCH$_2$D remain underestimated in all of our models. The deuteration of methyl formate appears to be more complex than initially thought. Additional studies, both experimentally and theoretically, are needed for a better understanding of the interstellar formation of these species.
