Superconducting materials with a nontrivial band structure are potential candidates for topological superconductivity. Here, by combining muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($mu$SR) methods with theoretical calculations, we investigate the superconducting and topological properties of the rock-salt-type compounds NbC and TaC (with$T_c$ = 11.5 and 10.3 K, respectively). At a macroscopic level, the magnetization and heat-capacity measurements under applied magnetic field provide an upper critical field of 1.93 and 0.65 T for NbC and TaC, respectively. The low-temperature superfluid density, determined by transverse-field $mu$SR and electronic specific-heat data, suggest a fully-gapped superconducting state in both NbC and TaC, with a zero-temperature gap $Delta_0 = 1.90$ and 1.45 meV, and a magnetic penetration depth $lambda_0$ = 141 and 77 nm, respectively. Band-structure calculations suggest that the density of states at the Fermi level is dominated by the Nb $4d$- (or Ta $5d$-) orbitals, which are strongly hybridized with the C $p$-orbitals to produce large cylinder-like Fermi surfaces, similar to those of high-$T_c$ iron-based superconductors. Without considering the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect, the first Brillouin zone contains three closed node lines in the bulk band structure, protected by time-reversal and space-inversion symmetry. When considering SOC, its effects in the NbC case appear rather modest. Therefore, the node lines may be preserved in NbC, hence proposing it as a potential topological superconductor.

We report the synthesis and physical properties of the single crystals of TaC, which are proposed to hold topological band structure as a topological superconductor (TSC) candidate. Magnetization, resistivity and specific heat measurements are performed and indicate that TaC is bulk superconductor with critical temperature of 10.3 K. TaC is a strongly coupled type-II superconductor and the superconducting state can be well described by s-wave Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory with a single gap. The upper critical field (Hc2) of TaC shows linear temperature dependence, which is quite different from most conventional superconductors and isostructural NbC, which is proposed to manifest topological nodal-loops or type-II Dirac points as well as superconductivity. Our results suggest that TaC would be a new candidate for further research of TSCs.
Quantum materials with non-trivial band topology and bulk superconductivity are considered superior materials to realize topological superconductivity. In this regard, we report detailed Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and Z2 invaraints for the NbC superconductor, exhibiting its band structure to be topologically non-trivial. Bulk superconductivity at 8.9K is confirmed through DC magnetization measurements under Field Cooled (FC) and Zero Field Cooled (ZFC) protocols. This superconductivity is found to be of type-II nature as revealed by isothermal M-H measurements and thus calculated the Ginzberg-Landau parameter. A large intermediate state is evident from the phase diagram, showing NbC to be a strong type-II superconductor. Comparing with earlier reports on superconducting NbC, a non-monotonic relationship of critical temperature with lattice parameters is seen. In conclusion, NbC is a type-II around 10K superconductor with topological non-trivial surface states.

We report the synthesis of single-crystal NbC, a transition metal carbide with various unusual properties. Transport, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements demonstrate that NbC is a conventional superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of 11.5 K. Our theoretical calculations show that NbC is a type-II Dirac semimetal with strong Fermi surface nesting, which is supported by our ARPES measurement results. We also observed the superconducting gaps of NbC using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and found some unconventional behaviors. These intriguing superconducting and topological properties, combined with the high corrosion resistance, make NbC an ideal platform for both fundamental research and device applications.
Topological superconductors (TSCs) are correlated quantum states with simultaneous off-diagonal long-range order and nontrivial topological invariants. They produce gapless or zero energy boundary excitations, including Majorana zero modes and chiral Majorana edge states with topologically protected phase coherence essential for fault-tolerant quantum computing. Candidate TSCs are very rare in nature. Here, we propose a novel route toward emergent quasi-one-dimensional (1D) TSCs in naturally embedded quantum structures such as atomic line defects in unconventional spin-singlet $s$-wave and $d$-wave superconductors. We show that inversion symmetry breaking and charge transfer due to the missing atoms lead to the occupation of incipient impurity bands and mixed parity spin singlet and triplet Cooper pairing of neighboring electrons traversing the line defect. Nontrivial topological invariants arise and occupy a large part of the parameter space, including the time reversal symmetry breaking Zeeman coupling due to applied magnetic field or defect-induced magnetism, creating TSCs in different topological classes with robust Majorana zero modes at both ends of the line defect. Beyond providing a novel mechanism for the recent discovery of zero-energy bound states at both ends of an atomic line defect in monolayer Fe(Te,Se) superconductors, the findings pave the way for new material realizations of the simplest and most robust 1D TSCs using embedded quantum structures in unconventional superconductors with large pairing energy gaps and high transition temperatures.
We study single crystals of the magnetic superconductor EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$ by magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and electrical resistance in pulsed magnetic fields up to 630 kOe. The superconducting state below 36.5 K is almost isotropic and only weakly affected by the development of Eu$^{2+}$ magnetic order at 15 K. On the other hand, for the external magnetic field applied along the c-axis the temperature dependence of the ESR linewidth reveals a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless topological transition below 15 K. This indicates that Eu$^{2+}$-planes are a good realization of a two-dimensional XY-magnet, which reflects the decoupling of the Eu$^{2+}$ magnetic moments from superconducting FeAs-layers.
