A Thouless pump can be regarded as a dynamical version of the integer quantum Hall effect. In a finite-size configuration, such topological pump displays edge modes that emerge dynamically from one bulk-band and dive into the opposite bulk-band, an effect that can be reproduced with both quantum and classical systems. Here, we report the first un-assisted dynamic energy transfer across a metamaterial, via pumping of such topological edge modes. The system is a topological aperiodic acoustic crystal, with a phason that can be fast and periodically driven in adiabatic cycles. When one edge of the metamaterial is excited in a topological forbidden range of frequencies, a microphone placed at the other edge starts to pick up a signal as soon as the pumping process is set in motion. In contrast, the microphone picks no signal when the forbidden range of frequencies is non-topological.

We report on the experimental observation of excitation and detection of parametric spin waves and spin currents in the bulk acoustic wave resonator. The hybrid resonator consists of ZnO piezoelectric film, yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films on gallium gadolinium garnet substrate, and a heavy metal Pt layer. Shear bulk acoustic waves are electrically excited in the ZnO layer due to piezoeffect at the resonant frequencies of the resonator. The magnetoelastic interaction in the YIG film emerges magnons (spin waves) excitation by acoustic waves either on resonators eigenfrequencies or the half-value frequencies at supercritical power. We investigate acoustic pumping of magnons at the half-value frequencies and acoustic spin pumping from parametric magnons, using the inverse spin Hall effect in the Pt layer. The constant electric voltage in the Pt layer, depending on the frequency, the magnetic field, and the pump power, was systematically studied. We explain the low threshold obtained (~0.4 mW) by the high efficiency of electric power transmission into the acoustic wave in the resonator.

Discovery of novel topological orders of condensed matters is of a significant interest in both fundamental and applied physics due to the associated quantum conductance behaviors and unique symmetry-protected backscattering-immune propagation against defects, which inspired similar fantastic effects in classical waves system, leading to the revolution of the manipulation of wave propagation. To date, however, only few theoretical models were proposed to realize acoustic topological states. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a two dimensional acoustic topological insulators with acoustic analogue of quantum spin Hall Effect. Due to the band inversion mechanism near the double Dirac cones, acoustic one-way pseudospin dependent propagating edge states, corresponding to spin-plus and spin-minus, can be observed at the interface between two graphene-like acoustic crystals. We have also experimentally verified the associated topological immunity of such one-way edge states against the different lattice defects and disorders, which can always lead to inherent propagation loss and noise. We show that this unique acoustic topological phenomenon can offer a new promising application platform for the design of novel acoustic devices, such as one-way sound isolators, acoustic mode switchers, splitters, filters etc.

Weyl points emerge as topological monopoles of Berry flux in the three-dimensional (3D) momentum space and have been extensively studied in topological semimetals. As the underlying topological principles apply to any type of waves under periodic boundary conditions, Weyl points can also be realized in classical wave systems, which are easier to engineer compared to condensed matter materials. Here, we made an acoustic Weyl phononic crystal by breaking space inversion (P) symmetry using a combination of slanted acoustic waveguides. We conducted angle-resolved transmission measurements to characterize the acoustic Weyl points. We also experimentally confirmed the existence of acoustic Fermi arcs and demonstrated robust one-way acoustic transport, where the surface waves can overcome a step barrier without reflection. This work lays a solid foundation for the basic research in 3D topological acoustic effects.

Passive parity-time-symmetric medium provides a feasible scheme to investigate non-Hermitian systems experimentally. Here, we design a passive PT-symmetric acoustic grating with a period equal to exact PT-symmetric medium. This treatment enhances the diffraction ability of a passive PT-symmetric grating with more compact modulation. Above all, it eliminates the first-order disturbance of previous design in diffraction grating. Additional cavities and small leaked holes on top plate in a 2D waveguide are used to construct a parity-time-symmetric potential. The combining between additional cavities and leaked holes makes it possible to modulate the real and imaginary parts of refractive index simultaneously. When the real and imaginary parts of refractive index are balanced in modulation, asymmetric diffraction can be observed between a pair of oblique incident waves. This demonstration provides a feasible way to construct passive parity-time-symmetric acoustic medium. It opens new possibilities for further investigation of acoustic wave control in non-Hermitian systems.
Surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in the GHz frequency range can inject spin currents dynamically into adjacent nonmagnetic layers via spin pumping effect associated with ferromagnetic resonance. Here, we demonstrate an enhancement of acoustic ferromagnetic resonance and spin current generation by a pair of SAW reflector gratings, which form an acoustic analogue of the distributed Bragg reflector cavity. In the experiment, we confirmed 2.04 $pm$ 0.02 times larger SAW power absorption in a device with cavity than in case of no acoustic cavity. We confirmed up to 2.96 $pm$ 0.02 times larger spin current generation by measuring electric voltages generated by the inverse Edelstein effect (IEE) at the interface between Cu and Bi$_2$O$_3$. The results suggest that acoustic cavities would be useful to enhance the conversion efficiency in SAW driven coupled magnon-phonon dynamics.
