The maximum/minimum bisection problems are, given an edge-weighted graph, to find a bipartition of the vertex set into two sets whose sizes differ by at most one, such that the total weight of edges between the two sets is maximized/minimized. Although these two problems are known to be NP-hard, there is an efficient algorithm for bounded-treewidth graphs. In particular, Jansen et al. (SIAM J. Comput. 2005) gave an $O(2^tn^3)$-time algorithm when given a tree decomposition of width $t$ of the input graph, where $n$ is the number of vertices of the input graph. Eiben et al. (ESA 2019) improved the dependency of $n$ in the running time by giving an $O(8^tt^5n^2log n)$-time algorithm. Moreover, they showed that there is no $O(n^{2-varepsilon})$-time algorithm for trees under some reasonable complexity assumption. In this paper, we show an $O(2^t(tn)^2)$-time algorithm for both problems, which is asymptotically tight to their conditional lower bound. We also show that the exponential dependency of the treewidth is asymptotically optimal under the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis. Finally, we discuss the (in)tractability of both problems with respect to special graph classes.
A (1 + eps)-approximate distance oracle for a graph is a data structure that supports approximate point-to-point shortest-path-distance queries. The most relevant measures for a distance-oracle construction are: space, query time, and preprocessing time. There are strong distance-oracle constructions known for planar graphs (Thorup, JACM04) and, subsequently, minor-excluded graphs (Abraham and Gavoille, PODC06). However, these require Omega(eps^{-1} n lg n) space for n-node graphs. We argue that a very low space requirement is essential. Since modern computer architectures involve hierarchical memory (caches, primary memory, secondary memory), a high memory requirement in effect may greatly increase the actual running time. Moreover, we would like data structures that can be deployed on small mobile devices, such as handhelds, which have relatively small primary memory. In this paper, for planar graphs, bounded-genus graphs, and minor-excluded graphs we give distance-oracle constructions that require only O(n) space. The big O hides only a fixed constant, independent of epsilon and independent of genus or size of an excluded minor. The preprocessing times for our distance oracle are also faster than those for the previously known constructions. For planar graphs, the preprocessing time is O(n lg^2 n). However, our constructions have slower query times. For planar graphs, the query time is O(eps^{-2} lg^2 n). For our linear-space results, we can in fact ensure, for any delta > 0, that the space required is only 1 + delta times the space required just to represent the graph itself.
Naor, Parter, and Yogev [SODA 2020] recently designed a compiler for automatically translating standard centralized interactive protocols to distributed interactive protocols, as introduced by Kol, Oshman, and Saxena [PODC 2018]. In particular, by using this compiler, every linear-time algorithm for deciding the membership to some fixed graph class can be translated into a $mathsf{dMAM}(O(log n))$ protocol for this class, that is, a distributed interactive protocol with $O(log n)$-bit proof size in $n$-node graphs, and three interactions between the (centralizer) computationally-unbounded but non-trustable prover Merlin, and the (decentralized) randomized computationally-limited verifier Arthur. As a corollary, there is a $mathsf{dMAM}(O(log n))$ protocol for the class of planar graphs, as well as for the class of graphs with bounded genus. We show that there exists a distributed interactive protocol for the class of graphs with bounded genus performing just a single interaction, from the prover to the verifier, yet preserving proof size of $O(log n)$ bits. This result also holds for the class of graphs with bounded demi-genus, that is, graphs that can be embedded on a non-orientable surface of bounded genus. The interactive protocols described in this paper are actually proof-labeling schemes, i.e., a subclass of interactive protocols, previously introduced by Korman, Kutten, and Peleg [PODC 2005]. In particular, these schemes do not require any randomization from the verifier, and the proofs may often be computed a priori, at low cost, by the nodes themselves. Our results thus extend the recent proof-labeling scheme for planar graphs by Feuilloley et al. [PODC 2020], to graphs of bounded genus, and to graphs of bounded demigenus.
In this paper, we prove that, given a clique-width $k$-expression of an $n$-vertex graph, textsc{Hamiltonian Cycle} can be solved in time $n^{mathcal{O}(k)}$. This improves the naive algorithm that runs in time $n^{mathcal{O}(k^2)}$ by Espelage et al. (WG 2001), and it also matches with the lower bound result by Fomin et al. that, unless the Exponential Time Hypothesis fails, there is no algorithm running in time $n^{o(k)}$ (SIAM. J. Computing 2014). We present a technique of representative sets using two-edge colored multigraphs on $k$ vertices. The essential idea is that, for a two-edge colored multigraph, the existence of an Eulerian trail that uses edges with different colors alternately can be determined by two information: the number of colored edges incident with each vertex, and the connectedness of the multigraph. With this idea, we avoid the bottleneck of the naive algorithm, which stores all the possible multigraphs on $k$ vertices with at most $n$ edges.
We present a nearly-linear time algorithm for counting and randomly generating simple graphs with a given degree sequence in a certain range. For degree sequence $(d_i)_{i=1}^n$ with maximum degree $d_{max}=O(m^{1/4-tau})$, our algorithm generates almost uniform random graphs with that degree sequence in time $O(m,d_{max})$ where $m=f{1}{2}sum_id_i$ is the number of edges in the graph and $tau$ is any positive constant. The fastest known algorithm for uniform generation of these graphs McKay Wormald (1990) has a running time of $O(m^2d_{max}^2)$. Our method also gives an independent proof of McKays estimate McKay (1985) for the number of such graphs. We also use sequential importance sampling to derive fully Polynomial-time Randomized Approximation Schemes (FPRAS) for counting and uniformly generating random graphs for the same range of $d_{max}=O(m^{1/4-tau})$. Moreover, we show that for $d = O(n^{1/2-tau})$, our algorithm can generate an asymptotically uniform $d$-regular graph. Our results improve the previous bound of $d = O(n^{1/3-tau})$ due to Kim and Vu (2004) for regular graphs.
