In this paper, we introduce a new framework for parametrization schemes (PS) in GFD. Using the theory of controlled rough paths, we derive a class of rough geophysical fluid dynamics (RGFD) models as critical points of rough action functionals. These RGFD models characterize Lagrangian trajectories in fluid dynamics as geometric rough paths (GRP) on the manifold of diffeomorphic maps. Three constrained variational approaches are formulated for the derivation of these models. The first is the Clebsch formulation, in which the constraints are imposed as rough advection laws. The second is the Hamilton-Pontryagin formulation, in which the constraints are imposed as right-invariant rough vector fields. The third is the Euler--Poincare formulation in which the variations are constrained. These variational principles lead directly to the Lie--Poisson Hamiltonian formulation of fluid dynamics on geometric rough paths. The GRP framework preserves the geometric structure of fluid dynamics obtained by using Lie group reduction to pass from Lagrangian to Eulerian variational principles, thereby yielding a rough formulation of the Kelvin circulation theorem. The rough-path variational approach includes non-Markovian perturbations of the Lagrangian fluid trajectories. In particular, memory effects can be introduced through this formulation through a judicious choice of the rough path (e.g. a realization of a fractional Brownian motion). In the special case when the rough path is a realization of a semimartingale, we recover the SGFD models in Holm (2015). However, by eliminating the need for stochastic variational tools, we retain a pathwise interpretation of the Lagrangian trajectories. In contrast, the Lagrangian trajectories in the stochastic framework are described by stochastic integrals which do not have a pathwise interpretation. Thus, the rough path formulation restores this property.

Let $(Omega, mu)$ be a probability space endowed with an ergodic action, $tau$ of $( {mathbb R} ^n, +)$. Let $H(x,p; omega)=H_omega(x,p)$ be a smooth Hamiltonian on $T^* {mathbb R} ^n$ parametrized by $omegain Omega$ and such that $ H(a+x,p;tau_aomega)=H(x,p;omega)$. We consider for an initial condition $fin C^0 ( {mathbb R}^n)$, the family of variational solutions of the stochastic Hamilton-Jacobi equations $$left{ begin{aligned} frac{partial u^{ varepsilon }}{partial t}(t,x;omega)+Hleft (frac{x}{ varepsilon } , frac{partial u^varepsilon }{partial x}(t,x;omega);omega right )=0 & u^varepsilon (0,x;omega)=f(x)& end{aligned} right .$$ Under some coercivity assumptions on $p$ -- but without any convexity assumption -- we prove that for a.e. $omega in Omega$ we have $C^0-lim u^{varepsilon}(t,x;omega)=v(t,x)$ where $v$ is the variational solution of the homogenized equation $$left{ begin{aligned} frac{partial v}{partial t}(x)+{overline H}left (frac{partial v }{partial x}(x) right )=0 & v (0,x)=f(x)& end{aligned} right.$$
We show that every $mathbb{R}^d$-valued Sobolev path with regularity $alpha$ and integrability $p$ can be lifted to a Sobolev rough path in the sense of T. Lyons provided $alpha >1/p>0$. Moreover, we prove the existence of unique rough path lifts which are optimal w.r.t. strictly convex functionals among all possible rough path lifts given a Sobolev path. As examples, we consider the rough path lift with minimal Sobolev norm and characterize the Stratonovich rough path lift of a Brownian motion as optimal lift w.r.t. to a suitable convex functional. Generalizations of the results to Besov spaces are briefly discussed.
We introduce the space of rough paths with Sobolev regularity and the corresponding concept of controlled Sobolev paths. Based on these notions, we study rough path integration and rough differential equations. As main result, we prove that the solution map associated to differential equations driven by rough paths is a locally Lipschitz continuous map on the Sobolev rough path space for any arbitrary low regularity $alpha$ and integrability $p$ provided $alpha >1/p$.
We derive the equations of motion for the dynamics of a porous media filled with an incompressible fluid. We use a variational approach with a Lagrangian written as the sum of terms representing the kinetic and potential energy of the elastic matrix, and the kinetic energy of the fluid, coupled through the constraint of incompressibility. As an illustration of the method, the equations of motion for both the elastic matrix and the fluid are derived in the spatial (Eulerian) frame. Such an approach is of relevance e.g. for biological problems, such as sponges in water, where the elastic porous media is highly flexible and the motion of the fluid has a primary role in the motion of the whole system. We then analyze the linearized equations of motion describing the propagation of waves through the media. In particular, we derive the propagation of S-waves and P-waves in an isotropic media. We also analyze the stability criteria for the wave equations and show that they are equivalent to the physicality conditions of the elastic matrix. Finally, we show that the celebrated Biots equations for waves in porous media are obtained for certain values of parameters in our models.
We revisit the basic variational formulation of the minimization problem associated with the micromagnetic energy, with an emphasis on the treatment of the stray field contribution to the energy, which is intrinsically non-local. Under minimal assumptions, we establish three distinct variational principles for the stray field energy: a minimax principle involving magnetic scalar potential and two minimization principles involving magnetic vector potential. We then apply our formulations to the dimension reduction problem for thin ferromagnetic shells of arbitrary shapes.
