It is shown that gauge field configurations with higher topological charge modify the structure of the QCD vacuum, which is reflected in its dependence on the CP-violating topological phase $theta$. To explore this, topological susceptibilities and the production of axion dark matter are studied here. The former characterize the topological charge distribution and are therefore sensitive probes of the topological structure of QCD. The latter depends on the effective potential of axions, which is determined by the $theta$-dependence of QCD. The production of cold dark matter through the vacuum realignement mechanism of axions can therefore be affected by higher topological charge effects. This is discussed qualitatively in the deconfined phase at high temperatures, where a description based on a dilute gas of instantons with arbitrary topological charge is valid. As a result, topological susceptibilities exhibit a characteristic temperature dependence due to anharmonic modifications of the $theta$-dependence. Furthermore, multi-instanton effects give rise to a topological mechanism to increase the amount of axion dark matter.

APE smearing and overlap-Dirac operator are combined to filter QCD vacuum configurations. The results obtained from overlap fermions and improved 5Li cooling are compared, both of them exhibit structures of dilute liquid of instanton. Finally the overlap fermions, improved 5Li cooling and APE smearing are combined to calculate the topological charge and identify the structure of QCD vacuum. The results suggest dilute liquid of instanton dominance of topological charge fluctuations in quenched lattice QCD.

In the QCD sum rules for the tetraquark (molecular) states, the higher dimensional vacuum condensates play an important role in extracting the tetraquark masses. We carry out the operator product expansion up to the vacuum condensates of dimension-10 and observe that the vacuum condensates of dimensions $6$, $8$ and $10$ have the same expressions but opposite signs for the $Cgamma_5otimes gamma_mu C$-type and $Cotimes gamma_mu C$ type four-quark currents, which make their influences distinguishable, and they are excellent channels to examine the vacuum saturation approximation. We introduce a parameter $kappa$ to parameterize the derivation from the vacuum saturation or factorization approximation, and choose two sets parameters to examine the influences on the predicted tetraquark masses, which can be confronted to the experimental data in the future. In all the channels, smaller value of the $kappa$ leads to better convergent behavior in the operator product expansion, which favors the vacuum saturation approximation.
Overlap fermions preserve a remnant of chiral symmetry on the lattice. They are a powerful tool to investigate the topological structure of the vacuum of Yang-Mills theory and full QCD. Recent results concerning the localization of topological charge and the localization and local chirality of the overlap eigenmodes are reported. The charge distribution is radically different, if a spectral cut-off for the Dirac eigenmodes is applied. The density q(x) is changing from the scale-a charge density (with full lattice resolution) to the ultraviolet filtered charge density. The scale-a density, computed on the Linux cluster of LRZ, has a singular, sign-coherent global structure of co-dimension 1 first described by the Kentucky group. We stress, however, the cluster properties of the UV filtered topological density resembling the instanton picture. The spectral cut-off can be mapped to a bosonic smearing procedure. The UV filtered field strength reveals a high degree of (anti)selfduality at hot spots of the action. The fermionic eigenmodes show a high degree of local chirality. The lowest modes are seen to be localized in low-dimensional space-time regions.
Overlap fermions implement exact chiral symmetry on the lattice and are thus an appropriate tool for investigating the chiral and topological structure of the QCD vacuum. We study various chiral and topological aspects on Luescher-Weisz-type quenched gauge field configurations using overlap fermions as a probe. Particular emphasis is placed upon the analysis of the spectral density and the localisation properties of the eigenmodes as well as on the local structure of topological charge fluctuations.
We analyze the chiral symmetries of flavored quantum chromodynamics in two dimensions and show the existence of chiral condensates within the path-integral approach. The massless and massive cases are discussed as well, for arbitrary finite and infinite number of colors. Our results put forward the question of topological issues when matter is in the fundamental representation of the gauge group.
