The (153591) 2001 SN263 asteroid system, target of the first Brazilian interplanetary space mission, is one of the known three triple systems within the population of NEAs. One of the mission objectives is to collect data about the formation of this system. The analysis of these data will help in the investigation of the physical and dynamical structures of the components (Alpha, Beta and Gamma) of this system, in order to find vestiges related to its origin. In this work, we assume the irregular shape of the 2001 SN263 system components as uniform density polyhedra and computationally investigate the gravitational field generated by these bodies. The goal is to explore the dynamical characteristics of the surface and environment around each component. Then, taking into account the rotational speed, we analyze their topographic features through the quantities geometric altitude, tilt, geopotential, slope, surface accelerations, among others. Additionally, the investigation of the environment around the bodies made it possible to construct zero-velocity curves, which delimit the location of equilibrium points. The Alpha component has a peculiar number of 12 equilibrium points, all of them located very close to its surface. In the cases of Beta and Gamma, we found four equilibrium points not so close to their surfaces. Then, performing numerical experiments around their equilibrium points, we identified the location and size of just one stable region, which is associated with an equilibrium point around Beta. Finally, we integrated a spherical cloud of particles around Alpha and identified the location on the surface of Alpha were the particles have fallen.
Radar observations show that (16) Psyche is one of the largest and most massive asteroids of the M-class located in the main belt, with a diameter of approximately 230 km. This fact makes Psyche a unique object since observations indicated an iron-nickel composition. It is believed that this body may be what was left of a metal core of an early planet that would have been fragmented over millions of years due to violent collisions. In this work we study a variety of dynamical aspects related to the surface, as well as, the environment around this asteroid. We use computational tools to explore the gravitational field generated by this body, assuming constant values for its density and rotation period. We then determine a set of physical and dynamical characteristics over its entire surface. The results include the geometric altitude, geopotential altitude, tilt, slope, among others. We also explore the neighborhood around the asteroid (16) Psyche, so that the location and linear stability of the equilibrium points were found. We found four external equilibrium points, two of them linearly stable. We confirmed the stability of these points by performing numerical simulations of massless particles around the asteroid, which also showed an asymmetry in the size of the stable regions. In addition, we integrate a cloud of particles in the vicinity of (16) Psyche in order to verify in which regions of its surface the particles are most likely to collide.
From a set of adaptive optics (AO) observations collected with the W.M. Keck telescope between August and September 2009, we derived the orbital parameters of the most recently discovered satellites of the large C-type asteroid (93) Minerva. The satellites of Minerva, which are approximately 3 and 4 km in diameter, orbit very close to the primary $sim$5 & $sim$8 $times$ Rp and $sim$1% & $sim$2% $times$ RHill) in a circular manner, sharing common characteristics with most of the triple asteroid systems in the main-belt. Combining these AO observations with lightcurve data collected since 1980 and two stellar occultations in 2010 & 2011, we removed the ambiguity of the pole solution of Minervas primary and showed that it has an almost regular shape with an equivalent diameter Deq = 154 $pm$ 6 km in agreement with IRAS observations. The surprisingly high bulk density of 1.75 $pm$ 0.30 g/cm$^3$ for this C-type asteroid, suggests that this taxonomic class is composed of asteroids with different compositions, For instance, Minerva could be made of the same material as dry CR, CO, and CV meteorites. We discuss possible scenarios on the origin of the system and conclude that future observations may shine light on the nature and composition of this fifth known triple main-belt asteroid.
In this paper we present results of our studying of famous very young pair of asteroids 6070 Rheinland and 54827 (2001 NQ8). We have done numeric integration of orbits of pair with only planet perturbations and include Ceres and Vesta effect. We have confirmed results of previous studying, obtained with different integrators. And we confirm significant effect of Ceres and Vesta perturbation on dynamic of this pair. We find that effect of other massive asteroids is insignificant. According our results, more probable age of 6070 Rheinland and 54827 (2001 NQ8) pair is 16.2 kyrs. Our value of age is very close to most recent age determination by Vokrouhlicky et al [12], obtained with different method. After the compare our results, we can conclude, that non-gravitational forces are small and large number of clones is not necessary in studying of this pair. As an additional way of studying of close orbits dynamics, we calculate relative velocity in pair during numeric integration. Normal component of velocity show a very good convergence at epoch of closest encounter in pair.
The asteroid belt was dynamically shaped during and after planet formation. Despite representing a broad ring of stable orbits, the belt contains less than one one-thousandth of an Earth mass. The asteroid orbits are dynamically excited with a wide range in eccentricity and inclination and their compositions are diverse, with a general trend toward dry objects in the inner belt and more water-rich objects in the outer belt. Here we review models of the asteroid belts origins and dynamical history. The classical view is that the belt was born with several Earth masses in planetesimals, then strongly depleted. However, it is possible that very few planetesimals ever formed in the asteroid region and that the belts story is one of implantation rather than depletion. A number of processes may have implanted asteroids from different regions of the Solar System, dynamically removed them, and excited their orbits. During the gaseous disk phase these include the effects of giant planet growth and migration and sweeping secular resonances. After the gaseous disk phase these include scattering from resident planetary embryos, chaos in the giant planets orbits, the giant planet instability, and long-term dynamical evolution. Different global models for Solar System formation imply contrasting dynamical histories of the asteroid belt. Vesta and Ceres may have been implanted from opposite regions of the Solar System -- Ceres from the Jupiter-Saturn region and Vesta from the terrestrial planet region -- and could therefore represent very different formation conditions.
The Euphrosyne asteroid family occupies a unique zone in orbital element space around 3.15 au and may be an important source of the low-albedo near-Earth objects. The parent body of this family may have been one of the planetesimals that delivered water and organic materials onto the growing terrestrial planets. We aim to characterize the compositional properties as well as the dynamical properties of the family. We performed a systematic study to characterize the physical properties of the Euphrosyne family members via low-resolution spectroscopy using the IRTF telescope. In addition, we performed smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations and N-body simulations to investigate the collisional origin, determine a realistic velocity field, study the orbital evolution, and constrain the age of the Euphrosyne family. Our spectroscopy survey shows that the family members exhibit a tight taxonomic distribution, suggesting a homogeneous composition of the parent body. Our SPH simulations are consistent with the Euphrosyne family having formed via a reaccumulation process instead of a cratering event. Finally, our N-body simulations indicate that the age of the family is 280 Myr +180/-80 Myr, which is younger than a previous estimate.
