The chaotic diffusion for particles moving in a time dependent potential well is described by using two different procedures: (i) via direct evolution of the mapping describing the dynamics and ; (ii) by the solution of the diffusion equation. The dynamic of the diffusing particles is made by the use of a two dimensional, nonlinear area preserving map for the variables energy and time. The phase space of the system is mixed containing both chaos, periodic regions and invariant spanning curves limiting the diffusion of the chaotic particles. The chaotic evolution for an ensemble of particles is treated as random particles motion and hence described by the diffusion equation. The boundary conditions impose that the particles can not cross the invariant spanning curves, serving as upper boundary for the diffusion, nor the lowest energy domain that is the energy the particles escape from the time moving potential well. The diffusion coefficient is determined via the equation of the mapping while the analytical solution of the diffusion equation gives the probability to find a given particle with a certain energy at a specific time. The momenta of the probability describe qualitatively the behavior of the average energy obtained by numerical simulation, which is investigated either as a function of the time as well as some of the control parameters of the problem.

In this paper, we discuss the emergence of extreme events in a parametrically driven non-polynomial mechanical system with a velocity-dependent potential. We confirm the occurrence of extreme events from the probability distribution function of the peaks, which exhibits a long-tail. We also present the mechanism for the occurrence of extreme events. We found that the probability of occurrence of extreme events alternatively increase and decrease with a brief region where the probability is zero. At the point of highest probability of extreme events, when the system is driven externally, we find that the probability decreases to zero. Our investigation confirms that the external drive can be used as an useful tool to mitigate extreme events in this nonlinear dynamical system. Through two parameter diagrams, we also demonstrate the regions where extreme events gets suppressed. In addition to the above, we show that extreme events persits when the sytem is influenced by noise and even gets transformed to super-extreme events when the state variable is influenced by noise.

We investigate the persistence probability of a Brownian particle in a harmonic potential, which decays to zero at long times -- leading to an unbounded motion of the Brownian particle. We consider two functional forms for the decay of the confinement, an exponential and an algebraic decay. Analytical calculations and numerical simulations show, that for the case of the exponential relaxation, the dynamics of Brownian particle at short and long times are independent of the parameters of the relaxation. On the contrary, for the algebraic decay of the confinement, the dynamics at long times is determined by the exponent of the decay. Finally, using the two-time correlation function for the position of the Brownian particle, we construct the persistence probability for the Brownian walker in such a scenario.
The mean first passage time, one of the important characteristics for a stochastic process, is often calculated assuming the observation time is infinite. However, in practice, the observation time, T, is always finite and the mean first passage time (MFPT) is dependent on the length of the observation time. In this work, we investigate the observation time dependence of the MFPT of a particle freely moving in the interval [-L,L] for a simple diffusion model and four different models of subdiffusion, the fractional diffusion equation (FDE), scaled Brown motion (SBM), fractional Brownian motion (FBM), and stationary Markovian approximation model of SBM and FBM. We find that the MFPT is linearly dependent on T in the small T limit for all the models investigated, while the large-T behavior of the MFPT is sensitive to stochastic properties of the transport model in question. We also discuss the relationship between the observation time, T, dependence and the travel-length, L, dependence of the MFPT. Our results suggest the observation time dependency of the MFPT can serve as an experimental measure that is far more sensitive to stochastic properties of transport processes than the mean square displacement.

In this letter, we demonstrate that a non-Hermitian Random Matrix description can account for both spectral and spatial statistics of resonance states in a weakly open chaotic wave system with continuously distributed losses. More specifically, the statistics of resonance states in an open 2D chaotic microwave cavity are investigated by solving the Maxwell equations with lossy boundaries subject to Ohmic dissipation. We successfully compare the statistics of its complex-valued resonance states and associated widths with analytical predictions based on a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian model defined by a finite number of fictitious open channels.
We show that, in strongly chaotic dynamical systems, the average particle velocity can be calculated analytically by consideration of Brownian dynamics in phase space, the method of images and use of the classical diffusion equation. The method is demonstrated on the simplified Fermi-Ulam accelerator model, which has a mixed phase space with chaotic seas, invariant tori and Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) islands. The calculated average velocities agree well with numerical simulations and with an earlier empirical theory. The procedure can readily be extended to other systems including time-dependent billiards.
