In this letter, we demonstrate that a non-Hermitian Random Matrix description can account for both spectral and spatial statistics of resonance states in a weakly open chaotic wave system with continuously distributed losses. More specifically, the statistics of resonance states in an open 2D chaotic microwave cavity are investigated by solving the Maxwell equations with lossy boundaries subject to Ohmic dissipation. We successfully compare the statistics of its complex-valued resonance states and associated widths with analytical predictions based on a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian model defined by a finite number of fictitious open channels.

We investigate the statistical properties of the complexness parameter which characterizes uniquely complexness (biorthogonality) of resonance eigenstates of open chaotic systems. Specifying to the regime of isolated resonances, we apply the random matrix theory to the effective Hamiltonian formalism and derive analytically the probability distribution of the complexness parameter for two statistical ensembles describing the systems invariant under time reversal. For those with rigid spectra, we consider a Hamiltonian characterized by a picket-fence spectrum without spectral fluctuations. Then, in the more realistic case of a Hamiltonian described by the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble, we reveal and discuss the r^ole of spectral fluctuations.
When applied to dynamical systems, both classical and quantum, time periodic modulations can produce complex non-equilibrium states which are often termed chaotic`. Being well understood within the unitary Hamiltonian framework, this phenomenon is less explored in open quantum systems. Here we consider quantum chaotic state emerging in a leaky cavity, when an intracavity photonic mode is coherently pumped with the intensity varying periodically in time. We show that a single spin, when placed inside the cavity and coupled to the mode, can moderate transitions between regular and chaotic regimes -- that are identified by using quantum Lyapunov exponents -- and thus can be used to control the degree of chaos. In an experiment, these transitions can be detected by analyzing photon emission statistics.
We investigate the nearest level spacing statistics of open chaotic wave systems. To this end we derive the spacing distributions for the three Wigner ensembles in the one-channel case. The theoretical results give a clear physical meaning of the modifications on the spacing distributions produced by the coupling to the environment. Based on the analytical expressions obtained, we then propose general expressions of the spacing distributions for any number of channels, valid from weak to strong coupling. The latter expressions contain one free parameter. The surmise is successfully compared with numerical simulations of non-Hermitian random matrices and with experimental data obtained with a lossy electromagnetic chaotic cavity.
We study the spectral statistics of spatially-extended many-body quantum systems with on-site Abelian symmetries or local constraints, focusing primarily on those with conserved dipole and higher moments. In the limit of large local Hilbert space dimension, we find that the spectral form factor $K(t)$ of Floquet random circuits can be mapped exactly to a classical Markov circuit, and, at late times, is related to the partition function of a frustration-free Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) type Hamiltonian. Through this mapping, we show that the inverse of the spectral gap of the RK-Hamiltonian lower bounds the Thouless time $t_{mathrm{Th}}$ of the underlying circuit. For systems with conserved higher moments, we derive a field theory for the corresponding RK-Hamiltonian by proposing a generalized height field representation for the Hilbert space of the effective spin chain. Using the field theory formulation, we obtain the dispersion of the low-lying excitations of the RK-Hamiltonian in the continuum limit, which allows us to extract $t_{mathrm{Th}}$. In particular, we analytically argue that in a system of length $L$ that conserves the $m^{th}$ multipole moment, $t_{mathrm{Th}}$ scales subdiffusively as $L^{2(m+1)}$. We also show that our formalism directly generalizes to higher dimensional circuits, and that in systems that conserve any component of the $m^{th}$ multipole moment, $t_{mathrm{Th}}$ has the same scaling with the linear size of the system. Our work therefore provides a general approach for studying spectral statistics in constrained many-body chaotic systems.
We show that a class of random all-to-all spin models, realizable in systems of atoms coupled to an optical cavity, gives rise to a rich dynamical phase diagram due to the pairwise separable nature of the couplings. By controlling the experimental parameters, one can tune between integrable and chaotic dynamics on the one hand, and between classical and quantum regimes on the other hand. For two special values of a spin-anisotropy parameter, the model exhibits rational-Gaudin type integrability and it is characterized by an extensive set of spin-bilinear integrals of motion, independent of the spin size. More generically, we find a novel integrable structure with conserved charges that are not purely bilinear. Instead, they develop `dressing tails of higher-body terms, reminiscent of the dressed local integrals of motion found in Many-Body Localized phases. Surprisingly, this new type of integrable dynamics found in finite-size spin-1/2 systems disappears in the large-$S$ limit, giving way to classical chaos. We identify parameter regimes for characterizing these different dynamical behaviors in realistic experiments, in light of the limitations set by cavity dissipation.
