We give the first approximation algorithm for mixed packing and covering semidefinite programs (SDPs) with polylogarithmic dependence on width. Mixed packing and covering SDPs constitute a fundamental algorithmic primitive with recent applications in combinatorial optimization, robust learning, and quantum complexity. The current approximate solvers for positive semidefinite programming can handle only pure packing instances, and technical hurdles prevent their generalization to a wider class of positive instances. For a given multiplicative accuracy of $epsilon$, our algorithm takes $O(log^3(ndrho) cdot epsilon^{-3})$ parallelizable iterations, where $n$, $d$ are dimensions of the problem and $rho$ is a width parameter of the instance, generalizing or improving all previous parallel algorithms in the positive linear and semidefinite programming literature. When specialized to pure packing SDPs, our algorithms iteration complexity is $O(log^2 (nd) cdot epsilon^{-2})$, a slight improvement and derandomization of the state-of-the-art (Allen-Zhu et. al. 16, Peng et. al. 16, Wang et. al. 15). For a wide variety of structured instances commonly found in applications, the iterations of our algorithm run in nearly-linear time. In doing so, we give matrix analytic techniques for overcoming obstacles that have stymied prior approaches to this open problem, as stated in past works (Peng et. al. 16, Mahoney et. al. 16). Crucial to our analysis are a simplification of existing algorithms for mixed positive linear programs, achieved by removing an asymmetry caused by modifying covering constraints, and a suite of matrix inequalities whose proofs are based on analyzing the Schur complements of matrices in a higher dimension. We hope that both our algorithm and techniques open the door to improved solvers for positive semidefinite programming, as well as its applications.

Semidefinite programs (SDPs) are a fundamental class of optimization problems with important recent applications in approximation algorithms, quantum complexity, robust learning, algorithmic rounding, and adversarial deep learning. This paper presents a faster interior point method to solve generic SDPs with variable size $n times n$ and $m$ constraints in time begin{align*} widetilde{O}(sqrt{n}( mn^2 + m^omega + n^omega) log(1 / epsilon) ), end{align*} where $omega$ is the exponent of matrix multiplication and $epsilon$ is the relative accuracy. In the predominant case of $m geq n$, our runtime outperforms that of the previous fastest SDP solver, which is based on the cutting plane method of Jiang, Lee, Song, and Wong [JLSW20]. Our algorithms runtime can be naturally interpreted as follows: $widetilde{O}(sqrt{n} log (1/epsilon))$ is the number of iterations needed for our interior point method, $mn^2$ is the input size, and $m^omega + n^omega$ is the time to invert the Hessian and slack matrix in each iteration. These constitute natural barriers to further improving the runtime of interior point methods for solving generic SDPs.
We propose a new hierarchy of semidefinite programming relaxations for inference problems. As test cases, we consider the problem of community detection in block models. The vertices are partitioned into $k$ communities, and a graph is sampled conditional on a prescribed number of inter- and intra-community edges. The problem of detection, where we are to decide with high probability whether a graph was drawn from this model or the uniform distribution on regular graphs, is conjectured to undergo a computational phase transition at a point called the Kesten-Stigum (KS) threshold. In this work, we consider two models of random graphs namely the well-studied (irregular) stochastic block model and a distribution over random regular graphs well call the Degree Regular Block Model. For both these models, we show that sufficiently high constant levels of our hierarchy can perform detection arbitrarily close to the KS threshold and that our algorithm is robust to up to a linear number of adversarial edge perturbations. Furthermore, in the case of Degree Regular Block Model (DRBM), we show that below the Kesten-Stigum threshold no constant level can do so. In the case of the (irregular) Stochastic Block Model, it is known that efficient algorithms exist all the way down to this threshold, although none are robust to a linear number of adversarial perturbations of the graph when the average degree is small. More importantly, there is little complexity-theoretic evidence that detection is hard below the threshold. In the DRBM with more than two groups, it has not to our knowledge been proven that any algorithm succeeds down to the KS threshold, let alone that one can do so robustly, and there is a similar dearth of evidence for hardness below this point.

In this paper, we introduce a set of block factor-width-two matrices, which is a generalisation of factor-width-two matrices and is a subset of positive semidefinite matrices. The set of block factor-width-two matrices is a proper cone and we compute a closed-form expression for its dual cone. We use these cones to build hierarchies of inner and outer approximations of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices. The main feature of these cones is that they enable a decomposition of a large semidefinite constraint into a number of smaller semidefinite constraints. As the main application of these classes of matrices, we envision large-scale semidefinite feasibility optimisation programs including sum-of-squares (SOS) programs. We present numerical examples from SOS optimisation showcasing the properties of this decomposition.
We show a new way to round vector solutions of semidefinite programming (SDP) hierarchies into integral solutions, based on a connection between these hierarchies and the spectrum of the input graph. We demonstrate the utility of our method by providing a new SDP-hierarchy based algorithm for constraint satisfaction problems with 2-variable constraints (2-CSPs). More concretely, we show for every 2-CSP instance I a rounding algorithm for r rounds of the Lasserre SDP hierarchy for I that obtains an integral solution that is at most eps worse than the relaxations value (normalized to lie in [0,1]), as long as r > kcdotrank_{geq theta}(Ins)/poly(e) ;, where k is the alphabet size of I, $theta=poly(e/k)$, and $rank_{geq theta}(Ins)$ denotes the number of eigenvalues larger than $theta$ in the normalized adjacency matrix of the constraint graph of $Ins$. In the case that $Ins$ is a uniquegames instance, the threshold $theta$ is only a polynomial in $e$, and is independent of the alphabet size. Also in this case, we can give a non-trivial bound on the number of rounds for emph{every} instance. In particular our result yields an SDP-hierarchy based algorithm that matches the performance of the recent subexponential algorithm of Arora, Barak and Steurer (FOCS 2010) in the worst case, but runs faster on a natural family of instances, thus further restricting the set of possible hard instances for Khots Unique Games Conjecture. Our algorithm actually requires less than the $n^{O(r)}$ constraints specified by the $r^{th}$ level of the Lasserre hierarchy, and in some cases $r$ rounds of our program can be evaluated in time $2^{O(r)}poly(n)$.
The average kissing number of $mathbb{R}^n$ is the supremum of the average degrees of contact graphs of packings of finitely many balls (of any radii) in $mathbb{R}^n$. We provide an upper bound for the average kissing number based on semidefinite programming that improves previous bounds in dimensions $3, ldots, 9$. A very simple upper bound for the average kissing number is twice the kissing number; in dimensions $6, ldots, 9$ our new bound is the first to improve on this simple upper bound.
