Intelligent conversational agents, or chatbots, can take on various identities and are increasingly engaging in more human-centered conversations with persuasive goals. However, little is known about how identities and inquiry strategies influence the conversations effectiveness. We conducted an online study involving 790 participants to be persuaded by a chatbot for charity donation. We designed a two by four factorial experiment (two chatbot identities and four inquiry strategies) where participants were randomly assigned to different conditions. Findings showed that the perceived identity of the chatbot had significant effects on the persuasion outcome (i.e., donation) and interpersonal perceptions (i.e., competence, confidence, warmth, and sincerity). Further, we identified interaction effects among perceived identities and inquiry strategies. We discuss the findings for theoretical and practical implications for developing ethical and effective persuasive chatbots. Our published data, codes, and analyses serve as the first step towards building competent ethical persuasive chatbots.
Conversational agents are a recent trend in human-computer interaction, deployed in multidisciplinary applications to assist the users. In this paper, we introduce Atreya, an interactive bot for chemistry enthusiasts, researchers, and students to study the ChEMBL database. Atreya is hosted by Telegram, a popular cloud-based instant messaging application. This user-friendly bot queries the ChEMBL database, retrieves the drug details for a particular disease, targets associated with that drug, etc. This paper explores the potential of using a conversational agent to assist chemistry students and chemical scientist in complex information seeking process.
This STEM education study investigates the Streamline to Mastery professional development program, in which teachers work in partnership with university researchers to design professional development opportunities for themselves and for fellow teachers. Our research describes the process of teacher professional growth both through changes in agency and through a shared pursuit of an improved understanding of classroom scientific inquiry. Videos, emails, lesson reflections, survey responses, and interviews were analyzed to glean insight into changes in teacher discourse around inquiry and into their shifts in participation within the professional community they established. Implications for professional development in STEM education are discussed.
Interpreting how persuasive language influences audiences has implications across many domains like advertising, argumentation, and propaganda. Persuasion relies on more than a messages content. Arranging the order of the message itself (i.e., ordering specific rhetorical strategies) also plays an important role. To examine how strategy orderings contribute to persuasiveness, we first utilize a Variational Autoencoder model to disentangle content and rhetorical strategies in textual requests from a large-scale loan request corpus. We then visualize interplay between content and strategy through an attentional LSTM that predicts the success of textual requests. We find that specific (orderings of) strategies interact uniquely with a requests content to impact success rate, and thus the persuasiveness of a request.
Outcome-driven studies designed to evaluate potential effects of games and apps designed to promote healthy eating and exercising remain limited either targeting design or usability factors while omitting out health-based outcomes altogether, or tend to be too narrowly focuses on behavioral outcomes within a short periods of time thereby less likely to influence longitudinal factors that can help sustain healthy habits. In this paper we argue for a unified approach to tackle behavioral change through focusing on both health outcomes and cognitive precursors, such as players attitudes and behaviors around healthy eating and exercising, motivation stage and knowledge and awareness about nutrition or physical activity. Key findings from a 3-month long game play study, with 47 female participants indicate that there are clear shifts in players perceptions about health and knowledge about eating. This paper extends our current understandings about approaches for evaluating health games and presents a unified approach to assess effectiveness of game-based health interventions through combining health-based outcomes and shifts in players cognitive precursors.
We present a dialogue elicitation study to assess how users envision conversations with a perfect voice assistant (VA). In an online survey, N=205 participants were prompted with everyday scenarios, and wrote the lines of both user and VA in dialogues that they imagined as perfect. We analysed the dialogues with text analytics and qualitative analysis, including number of words and turns, social aspects of conversation, implied VA capabilities, and the influence of user personality. The majority envisioned dialogues with a VA that is interactive and not purely functional; it is smart, proactive, and has knowledge about the user. Attitudes diverged regarding the assistants role as well as it expressing humour and opinions. An exploratory analysis suggested a relationship with personality for these aspects, but correlations were low overall. We discuss implications for research and design of future VAs, underlining the vision of enabling conversational UIs, rather than single command Q&As.
