While electrons moving perpendicular to a magnetic field are confined to cyclotron orbits, they can move freely parallel to the field. This simple fact leads to complex current flow in clean, low carrier density semi-metals, such as long-ranged current jets forming along the magnetic field when currents pass through point-like constrictions. Occurring accidentally at imperfect current injection contacts, the phenomenon of current jetting plagues the research of longitudinal magneto-resistance which is particularly important in topological conductors. Here we demonstrate the controlled generation of tightly focused electron beams in a new class of micro-devices machined from crystals of the Dirac semi-metal Cd3As2. The current beams can be guided by tilting a magnetic field and their range tuned by the field strength. Finite element simulations quantitatively capture the voltage induced at faraway contacts when the beams are steered towards them, supporting the picture of controlled electron jets. These experiments demonstrate the first direct control over the highly nonlocal signal propagation unique to 3D semi-metals in the current jetting regime, and may lead to novel applications akin to electron optics in free space.

We use photoemission spectroscopy to discover the first topological magnet in three dimensions, the material Co$_2$MnGa.
We apply both analytical and ab-initio methods to explore heterostructures composed of a threedimensional topological insulator (3D TI) and an ultrathin normal insulator (NI) overlayer as a proof ground for the principles of the topological phase engineering. Using the continual model of a semi-infinite 3D TI we study the surface potential (SP) effect caused by an attached ultrathin layer of 3D NI on the formation of topological bound states at the interface. The results reveal that spatial profile and spectrum of these near-surface states strongly depend on both the sign and strength of the SP. Using ab-initio band structure calculations to take materials specificity into account, we investigate the NI/TI heterostructures formed by a single tetradymite-type quintuple or septuple layer block and the 3D TI substrate. The analytical continuum theory results relate the near-surface state evolution with the SP variation and are in good qualitative agreement with those obtained from density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. We predict also the appearance of the quasi-topological bound state on the 3D NI surface caused by a local band gap inversion induced by an overlayer.

We collect and review works which treat two-dimensional electron gases in quantum wells (mostly GaAs/GaAlAs heterostructures) in the presence of quantizing magnetic fields as open systems in contact with outside reservoirs. If a reservoir is sufficiently large, it pins the Fermi level to a certain energy. As a result, in a varying external magnetic field, the thermodynamic equilibrium will force oscillations of the electron density in and out of the quantum well (QW). This leads to a number of physical phenomena in magneto-transport, interband and intraband magneto-optics, magnetization, magneto-plasma dispersion, etc. In particular, as first proposed by Baraff and Tsui, the density oscillations in and out of QW lead to plateaus in the Integer Quantum Hall Effect (IQHE) at values observed in experiments. The gathered evidence, especially from magneto-optical investigations, allows us to conclude that, indeed, in most GaAs/GaAlAs hetrostructures one deals with open systems in which the electron density in QWs oscillates as the magnetic field varies. Relation of the density oscillations to other factors, such as electron localization, and their combined influence on the quantum transport in 2D electron gases, is discussed. In particular, a validity of the classical formula for the Hall resistivity {rho}xy = B/Nec is considered. It is concluded that the density oscillations are not sufficient to be regarded as the only source of plateaus in IQHE, although such claims have been sometimes made in the past and present. Still, our general conclusion is that the reservoir approach should be included in various descriptions of 2D electron gases in the present of a magnetic field. An attempt has been made to quote all the relevant literature on the subject.
New insights into transport properties of nanostructures with a linear dispersion along one direction and a quadratic dispersion along another are obtained by analysing their spectral stability properties under small perturbations. Physically relevant sufficient and necessary conditions to guarantee the existence of discrete eigenvalues are derived under rather general assumptions on external fields. One of the most interesting features of the analysis is the evident spectral instability of the systems in the weakly coupled regime. The rigorous theoretical results are illustrated by numerical experiments and predictions for physical experiments are made.
Three-particle complexes consisting of two holes in the completely filled zero electron Landau level and an excited electron in the unoccupied first Landau level are investigated in a quantum Hall insulator. The distinctive features of these three-particle complexes are an electron-hole mass symmetry and the small energy gap of the quantum Hall insulator itself. Theoretical calculations of the trion energy spectrum in a quantizing magnetic field predict that, besides the ground state, trions feature a hierarchy of excited bound states. In agreement with the theoretical simulations, we observe new photoluminescence lines related to the excited trion states. A relatively small energy gap allows the binding of three-particle complexes with magnetoplasma oscillations and formation of plasmarons. The plasmaron properties are investigated experimentally.
