For any smooth domain $Omegasubset mathbb{R}^3$, we establish the existence of a global weak solution $(mathbf{u},mathbf{d}, theta)$ to the simplified, non-isothermal Ericksen-Leslie system modeling the hydrodynamic motion of nematic liquid crystals with variable temperature for any initial and boundary data $(mathbf{u}_0, mathbf{d}_0, theta_0)inmathbf{H}times H^1(Omega, mathbb{S}^2)times L^1(Omega)$, with $ mathbf{d}_0(Omega)subsetmathbb{S}_+^2$ (the upper half sphere) and $displaystyleinf_Omega theta_0>0$.

We construct global weak solutions to isothermal quantum Navier-Stokes equations, with or without Korteweg term, in the whole space of dimension at most three. Instead of working on the initial set of unknown functions, we consider an equivalent reformulation, based on a time-dependent rescaling, that we introduced in a previous paper to study the large time behavior, and which provides suitable a priori estimates, as opposed to the initial formulation where the potential energy is not signed. We proceed by working on tori whose size eventually becomes infinite. On each fixed torus, we consider the equations in the presence of drag force terms. Such equations are solved by regularization, and the limit where the drag force terms vanish is treated by resuming the notion of renormalized solution developed by I. Lacroix-Violet and A. Vasseur. We also establish global existence of weak solutions for the isothermal Korteweg equation (no viscosity), when initial data are well-prepared, in the sense that they stem from a Madelung transform.
For any bounded, smooth domain $Omegasubset R^2$, %(or $Omega=R^2$), we will establish the weak compactness property of solutions to the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system for both uniaxial and biaxial nematics, and the convergence of weak solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau type nematic liquid crystal flow to a weak solution of the simplified Ericksen-Leslie system as the parameter tends to zero. This is based on the compensated compactness property of the Ericksen stress tensors, which is obtained by the $L^p$-estimate of the Hopf differential for the Ericksen-Leslie system and the Pohozaev type argument for the Ginzburg-Landau type nematic liquid crystal flow.
Liquid crystal droplets are of great interest from physics and applications. Rigorous mathematical analysis is challenging as the problem involves harmonic maps (and in general the Oseen-Frank model), free interfaces and topological defects which could be either inside the droplet or on its surface along with some intriguing boundary anchoring conditions for the orientation configurations. In this paper, through a study of the phase transition between the isotropic and nematic states of liquid crystal based on the Ericksen model, we can show, when the size of droplet is much larger in comparison with the ratio of the Frank constants to the surface tension, a $Gamma$-convergence theorem for minimizers. This $Gamma$-limit is in fact the sharp interface limit for the phase transition between the isotropic and nematic regions when the small parameter $varepsilon$, corresponding to the transition layer width, goes to zero. This limiting process not only provides a geometric description of the shape of the droplet as one would expect, and surprisingly it also gives the anchoring conditions for the orientations of liquid crystals on the surface of the droplet depending on material constants. In particular, homeotropic, tangential, and even free boundary conditions as assumed in earlier phenomenological modelings arise naturally provided that the surface tension, Frank and Ericksen constants are in suitable ranges.
In this paper, we will establish the global existence of a suitable weak solution to the Erickson--Leslie system modeling hydrodynamics of nematic liquid crystal flows with kinematic transports for molecules of various shapes in ${mathbb{R}^3}$, which is smooth away from a closed set of (parabolic) Hausdorff dimension at most $frac{15}{7}$.

In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of the Poiseuille flow of full Ericksen-Leslie model for nematic liquid crystals. The model is a coupled system of a parabolic equation for the velocity and a quasilinear wave equation for the director. For a particular choice of several physical parameter values, we construct solutions with smooth initial data and finite energy that produce, in finite time, cusp singularities - blowups of gradients. The formation of cusp singularity is due to local interactions of wave-like characteristics of solutions, which is different from the mechanism of finite time singularity formations for the parabolic Ericksen-Leslie system. The finite time singularity formation for the physical model might raise some concerns for purposes of applications. This is, however, resolved satisfactorily; more precisely, we are able to establish the global existence of weak solutions that are Holder continuous and have bounded energy. One major contribution of this paper is our identification of the effect of the flux density of the velocity on the director and the reveal of a singularity cancellation - the flux density remains uniformly bounded while its two components approach infinity at formations of cusp singularities.
