Automatic recognition of Urdu handwritten digits and characters, is a challenging task. It has applications in postal address reading, banks cheque processing, and digitization and preservation of handwritten manuscripts from old ages. While there exists a significant work for automatic recognition of handwritten English characters and other major languages of the world, the work done for Urdu lan-guage is extremely insufficient. This paper has two goals. Firstly, we introduce a pioneer dataset for handwritten digits and characters of Urdu, containing samples from more than 900 individuals. Secondly, we report results for automatic recog-nition of handwritten digits and characters as achieved by using deep auto-encoder network and convolutional neural network. More specifically, we use a two-layer and a three-layer deep autoencoder network and convolutional neural network and evaluate the two frameworks in terms of recognition accuracy. The proposed framework of deep autoencoder can successfully recognize digits and characters with an accuracy of 97% for digits only, 81% for characters only and 82% for both digits and characters simultaneously. In comparison, the framework of convolutional neural network has accuracy of 96.7% for digits only, 86.5% for characters only and 82.7% for both digits and characters simultaneously. These frameworks can serve as baselines for future research on Urdu handwritten text.

The recognition of cursive script is regarded as a subtle task in optical character recognition due to its varied representation. Every cursive script has different nature and associated challenges. As Urdu is one of cursive language that is derived from Arabic script, thats why it nearly shares the same challenges and difficulties even more harder. We can categorized Urdu and Arabic language on basis of its script they use. Urdu is mostly written in Nastaliq style whereas, Arabic follows Naskh style of writing. This paper presents new and comprehensive Urdu handwritten offline database name Urdu-Nastaliq Handwritten Dataset (UNHD). Currently, there is no standard and comprehensive Urdu handwritten dataset available publicly for researchers. The acquired dataset covers commonly used ligatures that were written by 500 writers with their natural handwriting on A4 size paper. We performed experiments using recurrent neural networks and reported a significant accuracy for handwritten Urdu character recognition.

CNN model is a popular method for imagery analysis, so it could be utilized to recognize handwritten digits based on MNIST datasets. For higher recognition accuracy, various CNN models with different fully connected layer sizes are exploited to figure out the relationship between the CNN fully connected layer size and the recognition accuracy. Inspired by previous pruning work, we performed pruning methods of distinctiveness on CNN models and compared the pruning performance with NN models. For better pruning performances on CNN, the effect of angle threshold on the pruning performance was explored. The evaluation results show that: for the fully connected layer size, there is a threshold, so that when the layer size increases, the recognition accuracy grows if the layer size smaller than the threshold, and falls if the layer size larger than the threshold; the performance of pruning performed on CNN is worse than on NN; as pruning angle threshold increases, the fully connected layer size and the recognition accuracy decreases. This paper also shows that for CNN models trained by the MNIST dataset, they are capable of handwritten digit recognition and achieve the highest recognition accuracy with fully connected layer size 400. In addition, for same dataset MNIST, CNN models work better than big, deep, simple NN models in a published paper.
This paper describes the details of Sighthounds fully automated age, gender and emotion recognition system. The backbone of our system consists of several deep convolutional neural networks that are not only computationally inexpensive, but also provide state-of-the-art results on several competitive benchmarks. To power our novel deep networks, we collected large labeled datasets through a semi-supervised pipeline to reduce the annotation effort/time. We tested our system on several public benchmarks and report outstanding results. Our age, gender and emotion recognition models are available to developers through the Sighthound Cloud API at https://www.sighthound.com/products/cloud
Handwritten character recognition (HCR) is a challenging learning problem in pattern recognition, mainly due to similarity in structure of characters, different handwriting styles, noisy datasets and a large variety of languages and scripts. HCR problem is studied extensively for a few decades but there is very limited research on script independent models. This is because of factors, like, diversity of scripts, focus of the most of conventional research efforts on handcrafted feature extraction techniques which are language/script specific and are not always available, and unavailability of public datasets and codes to reproduce the results. On the other hand, deep learning has witnessed huge success in different areas of pattern recognition, including HCR, and provides end-to-end learning, i.e., automated feature extraction and recognition. In this paper, we have proposed a novel deep learning architecture which exploits transfer learning and image-augmentation for end-to-end learning for script independent handwritten character recognition, called HCR-Net. The network is based on a novel transfer learning approach for HCR, where some of lower layers of a pre-trained VGG16 network are utilised. Due to transfer learning and image-augmentation, HCR-Net provides faster training, better performance and better generalisations. The experimental results on publicly available datasets of Bangla, Punjabi, Hindi, English, Swedish, Urdu, Farsi, Tibetan, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, Marathi, Nepali and Arabic languages prove the efficacy of HCR-Net and establishes several new benchmarks. For reproducibility of the results and for the advancements of the HCR research, complete code is publicly released at href{https://github.com/jmdvinodjmd/HCR-Net}{GitHub}.

In this paper, we present a novel approach that uses deep learning techniques for colorizing grayscale images. By utilizing a pre-trained convolutional neural network, which is originally designed for image classification, we are able to separate content and style of different images and recombine them into a single image. We then propose a method that can add colors to a grayscale image by combining its content with style of a color image having semantic similarity with the grayscale one. As an application, to our knowledge the first of its kind, we use the proposed method to colorize images of ukiyo-e a genre of Japanese painting?and obtain interesting results, showing the potential of this method in the growing field of computer assisted art.
