We theoretically investigate the plasmonic heating of graphene-based systems under the mid-infrared laser irradiation, where periodic arrays of graphene plasmonic resonators are placed on dielectric thin films. Optical resonances are sensitive to structural parameters and the number of graphene layers. Under mid-infrared laser irradiation, the steady-state temperature gradients are calculated. We find that graphene plasmons significantly enhance the confinement of electromagnetic fields in the system and lead to a large temperature rise compared to the case without graphene. The correlations between temperature change and the optical power, laser spot, and thermal conductivity of dielectric layer in these systems are discussed. Our numerical results are in accordance with experiments.

We theoretically investigate the plasmonic properties of mid-infrared graphene-based metamaterials and apply deep learning of a neural network for the inverse design. These artificial structures have square periodic arrays of graphene plasmonic resonators deposited on dielectric thin films. Optical spectra vary significantly with changes in structural parameters. Our numerical results are in accordance with previous experiments. Then, the theoretical approach is employed to generate data for training and testing deep neural networks. By merging the pre-trained neural network with the inverse network, we implement calculations for inverse design of the graphene-based metameterials. We also discuss the limitation of the data-driven approach.
Nanoscale photothermal sources find important applications in theranostics, imaging, and catalysis. In this context, graphene offers a unique suite of optical, electrical, and thermal properties, which we exploit to show self-consistent active photothermal modulation of its nanoscale response. In particular, we predict the existence of plasmons confined to the optical landscape tailored by continuous-wave external-light pumping of homogeneous graphene. This result relies on the high electron temperatures achievable in optically pumped clean graphene while its lattice remains near ambient temperature. Our study opens a new avenue toward the active optical control of the nanophotonic response in graphene with potential application in photothermal devices.

Plasmonics takes advantage of the collective response of electrons to electromagnetic waves, enabling dramatic scaling of optical devices beyond the diffraction limit. Here, we demonstrate the mid-infrared (4 to 15 microns) plasmons in deeply scaled graphene nanostructures down to 50 nm, more than 100 times smaller than the on-resonance light wavelength in free space. We reveal, for the first time, the crucial damping channels of graphene plasmons via its intrinsic optical phonons and scattering from the edges. A plasmon lifetime of 20 femto-seconds and smaller is observed, when damping through the emission of an optical phonon is allowed. Furthermore, the surface polar phonons in SiO2 substrate underneath the graphene nanostructures lead to a significantly modified plasmon dispersion and damping, in contrast to a non-polar diamond-like-carbon (DLC) substrate. Much reduced damping is realized when the plasmon resonance frequencies are close to the polar phonon frequencies. Our study paves the way for applications of graphene in plasmonic waveguides, modulators and detectors in an unprecedentedly broad wavelength range from sub-terahertz to mid-infrared.
We demonstrate instrumentation and methods to enable fluorescence-detected photothermal infrared (F-PTIR) microscopy, then demonstrate the utility of F-PTIR to characterize the composition within phase-separated domains of model amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) induced by water sorption. In F-PTIR, temperature-dependent changes in fluorescence quantum efficiency are shown to sensitively report on highly localized absorption of mid-infrared radiation. The spatial resolution with which infrared spectroscopy can be performed is dictated by fluorescence microscopy, rather than the infrared wavelength. Following proof of concept F-PTIR demonstration on model systems of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and silica gel, F-PTIR enabled the characterization of chemical composition within inhomogeneous ritonavir / polyvinylpyrrolidone-vinyl acetate (PVPVA) amorphous dispersions. Phase separation is implicated in the observation of critical behaviors in ASD dissolution kinetics, with the results of F-PTIR supporting the formation of phase-separated drug-rich domains upon water absorption in spin-cast films.
Transistor structures comprising graphene and sub-wavelength metal gratings hold a great promise for plasmon-enhanced terahertz detection. Despite considerable theoretical effort, little experimental evidence for terahertz plasmons in such structures was found so far. Here, we report an experimental study of plasmons in graphene-insulator-grating structures using Fourier transform spectroscopy in 5-10 THz range. The plasmon resonance is clearly visible above the Drude absorption background even in chemical vapor deposited (CVD) graphene with low carrier mobility $sim 10^3$ cm$^2$/(V s). We argue that plasmon lifetime is weakly sensistive to scattering by grain boundaries and macoscopic defects which limits the mobility of CVD samples. Upon placing the grating in close proximity to graphene, the plasmon field becomes tightly bound below the metal stripes, while the resonant frequency is determined by the stripe width but not by grating period. Our results open the prospects of large-area commercially available graphene for resonant terahertz detectors.
