Target detection and tracking provides crucial information for motion planning and decision making in autonomous driving. This paper proposes an online multi-object tracking (MOT) framework with tracking-by-detection for maneuvering vehicles under motion uncertainty in dynamic road context. We employ a point cloud based vehicle detector to provide real-time 3D bounding boxes of detected vehicles and conduct the online bipartite optimization of the maneuver-orientated data association between the detections and the targets. Kalman Filter (KF) is adopted as the backbone for multi-object tracking. In order to entertain the maneuvering uncertainty, we leverage the interacting multiple model (IMM) approach to obtain the textit{a-posterior} residual as the cost for each association hypothesis, which is calculated with the hybrid model posterior (after mode-switch). Road context is integrated to conduct adjustments of the time varying transition probability matrix (TPM) of the IMM to regulate the maneuvers according to road segments and traffic sign/signals, with which the data association is performed in a unified spatial-temporal fashion. Experiments show our framework is able to effectively track multiple vehicles with maneuvers subject to dynamic road context and localization drift.

Drift control is significant to the safety of autonomous vehicles when there is a sudden loss of traction due to external conditions such as rain or snow. It is a challenging control problem due to the presence of significant sideslip and nearly full saturation of the tires. In this paper, we focus on the control of drift maneuvers following circular paths with either fixed or moving centers, subject to change in the tire-ground interaction, which are common training tasks for drift enthusiasts and can therefore be used as benchmarks of the performance of drift control. In order to achieve the above tasks, we propose a novel hierarchical control architecture which decouples the curvature and center control of the trajectory. In particular, an outer loop stabilizes the center by tuning the target curvature, and an inner loop tracks the curvature using a feedforward/feedback controller enhanced by an $mathcal{L}_1$ adaptive component. The hierarchical architecture is flexible because the inner loop is task-agnostic and adaptive to changes in tire-road interaction, which allows the outer loop to be designed independent of low-level dynamics, opening up the possibility of incorporating sophisticated planning algorithms. We implement our control strategy on a simulation platform as well as on a 1/10 scale Radio-Control~(RC) car, and both the simulation and experiment results illustrate the effectiveness of our strategy in achieving the above described set of drift maneuvering tasks.

This paper considers the problem of detecting and tracking multiple maneuvering targets, which suffers from the intractable inference of high-dimensional latent variables that include target kinematic state, target visibility state, motion mode-model association, and data association. A unified message passing algorithm that combines belief propagation (BP) and mean-field (MF) approximation is proposed for simplifying the intractable inference. By assuming conjugate-exponential priors for target kinematic state, target visibility state, and motion mode-model association, the MF approximation decouples the joint inference of target kinematic state, target visibility state, motion mode-model association into individual low-dimensional inference, yielding simple message passing update equations. The BP is exploited to approximate the probabilities of data association events since it is compatible with hard constraints. Finally, the approximate posterior probability distributions are updated iteratively in a closed-loop manner, which is effective for dealing with the coupling issue between the estimations of target kinematic state and target visibility state and decisions on motion mode-model association and data association. The performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by comparing with the well-known multiple maneuvering target tracking algorithms, including interacting multiple model joint probabilistic data association, interacting multiple model hypothesis-oriented multiple hypothesis tracker and multiple model generalized labeled multi-Bernoulli.
We address the problem of maintaining resource availability in a networked multi-robot system performing distributed target tracking. In our model, robots are equipped with sensing and computational resources enabling them to track a targets position using a Distributed Kalman Filter (DKF). We use the trace of each robots sensor measurement noise covariance matrix as a measure of sensing quality. When a robots sensing quality deteriorates, the systems communication graph is modified by adding edges such that the robot with deteriorating sensor quality may share information with other robots to improve the teams target tracking ability. This computation is performed centrally and is designed to work without a large change in the number of active communication links. We propose two mixed integer semi-definite programming formulations (an agent-centric strategy and a team-centric strategy) to achieve this goal. We implement both formulations and a greedy strategy in simulation and show that the team-centric strategy outperforms the agent-centric and greedy strategies.
In this work, we consider the problem of decentralized multi-robot target tracking and obstacle avoidance in dynamic environments. Each robot executes a local motion planning algorithm which is based on model predictive control (MPC). The planner is designed as a quadratic program, subject to constraints on robot dynamics and obstacle avoidance. Repulsive potential field functions are employed to avoid obstacles. The novelty of our approach lies in embedding these non-linear potential field functions as constraints within a convex optimization framework. Our method convexifies non-convex constraints and dependencies, by replacing them as pre-computed external input forces in robot dynamics. The proposed algorithm additionally incorporates different methods to avoid field local minima problems associated with using potential field functions in planning. The motion planner does not enforce predefined trajectories or any formation geometry on the robots and is a comprehensive solution for cooperative obstacle avoidance in the context of multi-robot target tracking. We perform simulation studies in different environmental scenarios to showcase the convergence and efficacy of the proposed algorithm. Video of simulation studies: url{https://youtu.be/umkdm82Tt0M}
The Institute of Measurement, Control and Microtechnology at Ulm University investigates advanced driver assistance systems for decades and concentrates in large parts on autonomous driving. It is well known that motion planning is a key technology for autonomous driving. It is first and foremost responsible for the safety of the vehicle passengers as well as of all surrounding traffic participants. However, a further task consists in providing a smooth and comfortable driving behavior. In Ulm, we have the grateful opportunity to test our algorithms under real conditions in public traffic and diversified scenarios. In this paper, we would like to give the readers an insight of our work, about the vehicle, the test track, as well as of the related problems, challenges and solutions. Therefore, we will describe the motion planning system and explain the implemented functionalities. Furthermore, we will show how our vehicle moves through public road traffic and how it deals with challenging scenarios like e.g. driving through roundabouts and intersections.
