We present a foraging algorithm, GoldenFA, in which search direction is chosen based on the Golden Ratio. We show both theoretically and empirically that GoldenFA is more efficient for a single searcher than a comparable algorithm where search direction is chosen uniformly at random. Moreover, we give a variant of our algorithm that parallelizes linearly with the number of searchers.

In this paper, we perform an ablation study of eatfa, a neuro-evolved foraging algorithm that has recently been shown to forage efficiently under different resource distributions. Through selective disabling of input signals, we identify a emph{sufficiently} minimal set of input features that contribute the most towards determining search trajectories which favor high resource collection rates. Our experiments reveal that, independent of how the resources are distributed in the arena, the signals involved in imparting the controller the ability to switch from searching of resources to transporting them back to the nest are the most critical. Additionally, we find that pheromones play a key role in boosting performance of the controller by providing signals for informed locomotion in search for unforaged resources.
We present a local algorithm (constant-time distributed algorithm) for finding a 3-approximate vertex cover in bounded-degree graphs. The algorithm is deterministic, and no auxiliary information besides port numbering is required.
Multisplit is a broadly useful parallel primitive that permutes its input data into contiguous buckets or bins, where the function that categorizes an element into a bucket is provided by the programmer. Due to the lack of an efficient multisplit on GPUs, programmers often choose to implement multisplit with a sort. One way is to first generate an auxiliary array of bucket IDs and then sort input data based on it. In case smaller indexed buckets possess smaller valued keys, another way for multisplit is to directly sort input data. Both methods are inefficient and require more work than necessary: the former requires more expensive data movements while the latter spends unnecessary effort in sorting elements within each bucket. In this work, we provide a parallel model and multiple implementations for the multisplit problem. Our principal focus is multisplit for a small (up to 256) number of buckets. We use warp-synchronous programming models and emphasize warp-wide communications to avoid branch divergence and reduce memory usage. We also hierarchically reorder input elements to achieve better coalescing of global memory accesses. On a GeForce GTX 1080 GPU, we can reach a peak throughput of 18.93 Gkeys/s (or 11.68 Gpairs/s) for a key-only (or key-value) multisplit. Finally, we demonstrate how multisplit can be used as a building block for radix sort. In our multisplit-based sort implementation, we achieve comparable performance to the fastest GPU sort routines, sorting 32-bit keys (and key-value pairs) with a throughput of 3.0 G keys/s (and 2.1 Gpair/s).
Adam is the important optimization algorithm to guarantee efficiency and accuracy for training many important tasks such as BERT and ImageNet. However, Adam is generally not compatible with information (gradient) compression technology. Therefore, the communication usually becomes the bottleneck for parallelizing Adam. In this paper, we propose a communication efficient {bf A}DAM {bf p}reconditioned {bf M}omentum SGD algorithm-- named APMSqueeze-- through an error compensated method compressing gradients. The proposed algorithm achieves a similar convergence efficiency to Adam in term of epochs, but significantly reduces the running time per epoch. In terms of end-to-end performance (including the full-precision pre-condition step), APMSqueeze is able to provide {sometimes by up to $2-10times$ speed-up depending on network bandwidth.} We also conduct theoretical analysis on the convergence and efficiency.
