No Arabic abstract
Contextualized representations trained over large raw text data have given remarkable improvements for NLP tasks including question answering and reading comprehension. There have been works showing that syntactic, semantic and word sense knowledge are contained in such representations, which explains why they benefit such tasks. However, relatively little work has been done investigating commonsense knowledge contained in contextualized representations, which is crucial for human question answering and reading comprehension. We study the commonsense ability of GPT, BERT, XLNet, and RoBERTa by testing them on seven challenging benchmarks, finding that language modeling and its variants are effective objectives for promoting models commonsense ability while bi-directional context and larger training set are bonuses. We additionally find that current models do poorly on tasks require more necessary inference steps. Finally, we test the robustness of models by making dual test cases, which are correlated so that the correct prediction of one sample should lead to correct prediction of the other. Interestingly, the models show confusion on these test cases, which suggests that they learn commonsense at the surface rather than the deep level. We release a test set, named CATs publicly, for future research.
Recent works show that pre-trained language models (PTLMs), such as BERT, possess certain commonsense and factual knowledge. They suggest that it is promising to use PTLMs as neural knowledge bases via predicting masked words. Surprisingly, we find that this may not work for numerical commonsense knowledge (e.g., a bird usually has two legs). In this paper, we investigate whether and to what extent we can induce numerical commonsense knowledge from PTLMs as well as the robustness of this process. To study this, we introduce a novel probing task with a diagnostic dataset, NumerSense, containing 13.6k masked-word-prediction probes (10.5k for fine-tuning and 3.1k for testing). Our analysis reveals that: (1) BERT and its stronger variant RoBERTa perform poorly on the diagnostic dataset prior to any fine-tuning; (2) fine-tuning with distant supervision brings some improvement; (3) the best supervised model still performs poorly as compared to human performance (54.06% vs 96.3% in accuracy).
Recent explorations of large-scale pre-trained language models (PLMs) such as GPT-3 have revealed the power of PLMs with huge amounts of parameters, setting off a wave of training ever-larger PLMs. However, training a large-scale PLM requires tremendous amounts of computational resources, which is time-consuming and expensive. In addition, existing large-scale PLMs are mainly trained from scratch individually, ignoring the availability of many existing well-trained PLMs. To this end, we explore the question that how can previously trained PLMs benefit training larger PLMs in future. Specifically, we introduce a novel pre-training framework named knowledge inheritance (KI), which combines both self-learning and teacher-guided learning to efficiently train larger PLMs. Sufficient experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of our KI framework. We also conduct empirical analyses to explore the effects of teacher PLMs pre-training settings, including model architecture, pre-training data, etc. Finally, we show that KI can well support lifelong learning and knowledge transfer.
Complex node interactions are common in knowledge graphs, and these interactions also contain rich knowledge information. However, traditional methods usually treat a triple as a training unit during the knowledge representation learning (KRL) procedure, neglecting contextualized information of the nodes in knowledge graphs (KGs). We generalize the modeling object to a very general form, which theoretically supports any subgraph extracted from the knowledge graph, and these subgraphs are fed into a novel transformer-based model to learn the knowledge embeddings. To broaden usage scenarios of knowledge, pre-trained language models are utilized to build a model that incorporates the learned knowledge representations. Experimental results demonstrate that our model achieves the state-of-the-art performance on several medical NLP tasks, and improvement above TransE indicates that our KRL method captures the graph contextualized information effectively.
Large-scale pre-trained language models have demonstrated strong capabilities of generating realistic text. However, it remains challenging to control the generation results. Previous approaches such as prompting are far from sufficient, which limits the usage of language models. To tackle this challenge, we propose an innovative method, inverse prompting, to better control text generation. The core idea of inverse prompting is to use generated text to inversely predict the prompt during beam search, which enhances the relevance between the prompt and the generated text and provides better controllability. Empirically, we pre-train a large-scale Chinese language model to perform a systematic study using human evaluation on the tasks of open-domain poem generation and open-domain long-form question answering. Our results show that our proposed method substantially outperforms the baselines and that our generation quality is close to human performance on some of the tasks. Multilingual transformers (XLM, mT5) have been shown to have remarkable transfer skills in zero-shot settings. Most transfer studies, however, rely on automatically translated resources (XNLI, XQuAD), making it hard to discern the particular linguistic knowledge that is being transferred, and the role of expert annotated monolingual datasets when developing task-specific models. We investigate the cross-lingual transfer abilities of XLM-R for Chinese and English natural language inference (NLI), with a focus on the recent large-scale Chinese dataset OCNLI. To better understand linguistic transfer, we created 4 categories of challenge and adversarial tasks (totaling 17 new datasets) for Chinese that build on several well-known resources for English (e.g., HANS, NLI stress-tests). We find that cross-lingual models trained on English NLI do transfer well across our Chinese tasks (e.g., in 3/4 of our challenge categories, they perform as well/better than the best monolingual models, even on 3/5 uniquely Chinese linguistic phenomena such as idioms, pro drop). These results, however, come with important caveats: cross-lingual models often perform best when trained on a mixture of English and high-quality monolingual NLI data (OCNLI), and are often hindered by automatically translated resources (XNLI-zh). For many phenomena, all models continue to struggle, highlighting the need for our new diagnostics to help benchmark Chinese and cross-lingual models.
