Quantum walks in atomic systems, owing to their continuous nature, are especially well-suited for the simulation of many-body physics and can potentially offer an exponential speedup in solving certain black box problems. Photonics offers an alternate route to simulating such nonclassical behavior in a more robust platform. However, in photonic implementations to date, an increase to the depth of a continuous quantum walk requires modifying the footprint of the system. Here we report continuous walks of a two-photon quantum frequency comb with entanglement across multiple dimensions. The coupling between frequency modes is mediated by electro-optic phase modulation, which makes the evolution of the state completely tunable over a continuous range. With arbitrary control of the phase across different modes, we demonstrate a rich variety of behavior: from walks exhibiting ballistic transport or strong energy confinement, to subspaces featuring bosonic or fermionic character. We also explore the role of entanglement dimensionality and demonstrate biphoton energy bound states, which are only possible with multilevel entanglement. This suggests the potential for such walks to quantify entanglement in high-dimensional systems.

We present an input/output analysis of photon-correlation experiments whereby a quantum mechanically entangled bi-photon state interacts with a material sample placed in one arm of a Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) apparatus. We show that the output signal contains detailed information about subsequent entanglement with the microscopic quantum states in the sample. In particular, we apply the method to an ensemble of emitters interacting with a common photon mode within the open-system Dicke Model. Our results indicate considerable dynamical information concerning spontaneous symmetry breaking can be revealed with such an experimental system.
A completely depolarising quantum channel always outputs a fully mixed state and thus cannot transmit any information. In a recent Letter [D. Ebler et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 120502 (2018)], it was however shown that if a quantum state passes through two such channels in a quantum superposition of different orders - a setup known as the quantum switch - then information can nevertheless be transmitted through the channels. Here, we show that a similar effect can be obtained when one coherently controls between sending a target system through one of two identical depolarising channels. Whereas it is tempting to attribute this effect in the quantum switch to the indefinite causal order between the channels, causal indefiniteness plays no role in this new scenario. This raises questions about its role in the corresponding effect in the quantum switch. We study this new scenario in detail and we see that, when quantum channels are controlled coherently, information about their specific implementation is accessible in the output state of the joint control-target system. This allows two different implementations of what is usually considered to be the same channel to therefore be differentiated. More generally, we find that to completely describe the action of a coherently controlled quantum channel, one needs to specify not only a description of the channel (e.g., in terms of Kraus operators), but an additional transformation matrix depending on its implementation.
Quantum entangled photons provide a sensitive probe of many-body interactions and offer an unique experimental portal for quantifying many-body correlations in a material system. In this paper, we present a theoretical demonstration of how photon-photon entanglement can be generated via interactions between coupled qubits. Here we develop a model for the scattering of an entangled pair of photons from a molecular dimer. We develop a diagrammatic theory for the scattering matrix and show that one can correlate the von Neumann entropy of the outgoing bi-photon wave function to exciton exchange and repulsion interactions. We conclude by discussing possible experimental scenarios for realizing these ideas.
We address the performance of a coin-biased quantum walk as a generator for non-classical position states of the walker. We exploit a phenomenon of coherent localisation in the position space --- resulting from the choice of small values of the coin parameter and assisted by post-selection --- to engineer large-size coherent superpositions of distinguishable position states of the walker. The protocol that we design appears to be remarkably robust against both the actual value taken by the coin parameter and strong dephasing-like noise acting on the spatial degree of freedom. We finally illustrate a possible linear-optics implementation of our proposal, suitable for both bulk and integrated-optics platforms.
High-dimensional entangled photons are a key resource for advanced quantum information processing. Efficient processing of high-dimensional entangled photons requires the ability to synthesize their state using general unitary transformations. The leading technology for processing photons in high-dimensions is integrated multiport interferometers. However, such devices are incompatible with free-space and fiber-based systems, and their architecture poses significant scaling challenges. Here we unlock these limitations by demonstrating a reconfigurable processor of entangled photons that is based on multi-plane light conversion (MPLC), a technology that was recently developed for multiplexing hundreds of spatial modes for classical free-space and fiber communication. To demonstrate the flexibility of MPLC, we perform four key tasks of quantum information processing using the same MPLC hardware: entanglement certification, tailored two-photon interference, arbitrary state transformations, and mode conversion. Based on the high degree of control we obtain, we expect MPLC will become a leading platform for future quantum technologies.
