Mask-based lensless cameras replace the lens of a conventional camera with a custom mask. These cameras can potentially be very thin and even flexible. Recently, it has been demonstrated that such mask-based cameras can recover light intensity and depth information of a scene. Existing depth recovery algorithms either assume that the scene consists of a small number of depth planes or solve a sparse recovery problem over a large 3D volume. Both these approaches fail to recover the scenes with large depth variations. In this paper, we propose a new approach for depth estimation based on an alternating gradient descent algorithm that jointly estimates a continuous depth map and light distribution of the unknown scene from its lensless measurements. We present simulation results on image and depth reconstruction for a variety of 3D test scenes. A comparison between the proposed algorithm and other method shows that our algorithm is more robust for natural scenes with a large range of depths. We built a prototype lensless camera and present experimental results for reconstruction of intensity and depth maps of different real objects.

Recently, coded masks have been used to demonstrate a thin form-factor lensless camera, FlatCam, in which a mask is placed immediately on top of a bare image sensor. In this paper, we present an imaging model and algorithm to jointly estimate depth and intensity information in the scene from a single or multiple FlatCams. We use a light field representation to model the mapping of 3D scene onto the sensor in which light rays from different depths yield different modulation patterns. We present a greedy depth pursuit algorithm to search the 3D volume and estimate the depth and intensity of each pixel within the camera field-of-view. We present simulation results to analyze the performance of our proposed model and algorithm with different FlatCam settings.
Mask-based lensless imagers are smaller and lighter than traditional lensed cameras. In these imagers, the sensor does not directly record an image of the scene; rather, a computational algorithm reconstructs it. Typically, mask-based lensless imagers use a model-based reconstruction approach that suffers from long compute times and a heavy reliance on both system calibration and heuristically chosen denoisers. In this work, we address these limitations using a bounded-compute, trainable neural network to reconstruct the image. We leverage our knowledge of the physical system by unrolling a traditional model-based optimization algorithm, whose parameters we optimize using experimentally gathered ground-truth data. Optionally, images produced by the unrolled network are then fed into a jointly-trained denoiser. As compared to traditional methods, our architecture achieves better perceptual image quality and runs 20x faster, enabling interactive previewing of the scene. We explore a spectrum between model-based and deep learning methods, showing the benefits of using an intermediate approach. Finally, we test our network on images taken in the wild with a prototype mask-based camera, demonstrating that our network generalizes to natural images.
Accelerating the acquisition of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a challenging problem, and many works have been proposed to reconstruct images from undersampled k-space data. However, if the main purpose is to extract certain quantitative measures from the images, perfect reconstructions may not always be necessary as long as the images enable the means of extracting the clinically relevant measures. In this paper, we work on jointly predicting cardiac motion estimation and segmentation directly from undersampled data, which are two important steps in quantitatively assessing cardiac function and diagnosing cardiovascular diseases. In particular, a unified model consisting of both motion estimation branch and segmentation branch is learned by optimising the two tasks simultaneously. Additional corresponding fully-sampled images are incorporated into the network as a parallel sub-network to enhance and guide the learning during the training process. Experimental results using cardiac MR images from 220 subjects show that the proposed model is robust to undersampled data and is capable of predicting results that are close to that from fully-sampled ones, while bypassing the usual image reconstruction stage.
One of the important parameters for the assessment of glaucoma is optic nerve head (ONH) evaluation, which usually involves depth estimation and subsequent optic disc and cup boundary extraction. Depth is usually obtained explicitly from imaging modalities like optical coherence tomography (OCT) and is very challenging to estimate depth from a single RGB image. To this end, we propose a novel method using adversarial network to predict depth map from a single image. The proposed depth estimation technique is trained and evaluated using individual retinal images from INSPIRE-stereo dataset. We obtain a very high average correlation coefficient of 0.92 upon five fold cross validation outperforming the state of the art. We then use the depth estimation process as a proxy task for joint optic disc and cup segmentation.
Depth estimation is an important computer vision problem with many practical applications to mobile devices. While many solutions have been proposed for this task, they are usually very computationally expensive and thus are not applicable for on-device inference. To address this problem, we introduce the first Mobile AI challenge, where the target is to develop an end-to-end deep learning-based depth estimation solutions that can demonstrate a nearly real-time performance on smartphones and IoT platforms. For this, the participants were provided with a new large-scale dataset containing RGB-depth image pairs obtained with a dedicated stereo ZED camera producing high-resolution depth maps for objects located at up to 50 meters. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the popular Raspberry Pi 4 platform with a mobile ARM-based Broadcom chipset. The proposed solutions can generate VGA resolution depth maps at up to 10 FPS on the Raspberry Pi 4 while achieving high fidelity results, and are compatible with any Android or Linux-based mobile devices. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.
