We investigate the trion binding energy in a three-dimensional semiconductor, with bare Coulomb interaction between charges, and effective mass approximation for the electron and hole dispersion relations. This is done by making use of a previously proposed exact method for the three-body problem. The calculations cover the complete range of electron-to-hole mass ratio. We find a perfect agreement with existing variational calculations. Investigating the small and large mass ratio regimes, we build a three parameters interpolating formula for the trion binding energy $E_b(r)$ in terms of the exciton binding energy, where $r$ is the electron to exciton mass ratio. This formula $E_b(r)=0.71347-0.11527 ,r -0.18580, sqrt{1-r},$, in atomic units, is in full agreement, within our precision, with our numerical results over the complete range of mass ratio.

We investigate the ground-state energy and spin of disordered quantum dots using spin-density-functional theory. Fluctuations of addition energies (Coulomb-blockade peak spacings) do not scale with average addition energy but remain proportional to level spacing. With increasing interaction strength, the even-odd alternation of addition energies disappears, and the probability of non-minimal spin increases, but never exceeds 50%. Within a two-orbital model, we show that the off-diagonal Coulomb matrix elements help stabilize a ground state of minimal spin.
In 1963 a partial differential equation with a convolution non-linearity was introduced in connection with a quantum mechanical many-body problem, namely the gas of bosonic particles. This equation is mathematically interesting for several reasons. (1) Although the equation was expected to be valid only for small values of the parameters, further investigation showed that predictions based on the equation agree well over the {it entire range} of parameters with what is expected to be true for the solution of the true many-body problem. (2) The novel nonlinearity is easy to state but seems to have almost no literature up to now. (3) The earlier work did not prove existence and uniqueness of a solution, which we provide here along with properties of the solution such as decay at infinity.
Magnetization ground states are studied in toroidal nanomagnets. The energetics associated to the ferromagnetic, vortex and onion-like configurations are explicitly computed. The analysis reveals that the vortex appears to be the most prominent of such states, minimizing total energy in every torus with internal radius $rgtrsim10,{rm nm}$ (for Permalloy). For $rlesssim10,{rm nm}$ the vortex remains the most favorable pattern whenever $R/ell_{ex}gtrsim1.5$ ($R$ is the torus external radius and $ell_{ex}$ is the exchange length), being substituted by the ferromagnetic state whenever $R/ell_{ex}lesssim1.5$.
We demonstrate that the temperature and doping dependencies of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra of a doped MoS2 monolayer have several peculiar characteristics defined by trion radiative decay. While only zero-momentum exciton states are coupled to light, radiative recombination of non-zero momentum trions is also allowed. This leads to an asymmetric broadening of the trion spectral peak and redshift of the emitted light with increasing temperature. The lowest energy trion state is dark, which is manifested by the sharply non-monotonic temperature dependence of the PL intensity. Our calculations combine the Dirac model for the single-particle states, the parameters for which are obtained from the first principle calculations, and the direct solution of the three-particle problem within the Tamm-Dancoff approximation. The numerical results are well captured by a simple model that yields analytical expressions for the temperature dependencies of the PL spectra.
We report charged exciton (trion) formation dynamics in doped monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), specifically molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2), using resonant two-color pump-probe spectroscopy. When resonantly pumping the exciton transition, trions are generated on a picosecond timescale through exciton-electron interaction. As the pump energy is tuned from the high energy to low energy side of the inhomogeneously broadened exciton resonance, the trion formation time increases by ~ 50%. This feature can be explained by the existence of both localized and delocalized excitons in a disordered potential and suggests the existence of an exciton mobility edge in TMDs. The quasiparticle formation and conversion processes are important for interpreting photoluminescence and photoconductivity in TMDs.
