Reconstruction of directional fields is a need in many geometry processing tasks, such as image tracing, extraction of 3D geometric features, and finding principal surface directions. A common approach to the construction of directional fields from data relies on complex optimization procedures, which are usually poorly formalizable, require a considerable computational effort, and do not transfer across applications. In this work, we propose a deep learning-based approach and study the expressive power and generalization ability.
The problems of shape classification and part segmentation from 3D point clouds have garnered increasing attention in the last few years. Both of these problems, however, suffer from relatively small training sets, creating the need for statistically efficient methods to learn 3D shape representations. In this paper, we investigate the use of Approximate Convex Decompositions (ACD) as a self-supervisory signal for label-efficient learning of point cloud representations. We show that using ACD to approximate ground truth segmentation provides excellent self-supervision for learning 3D point cloud representations that are highly effective on downstream tasks. We report improvements over the state-of-the-art for unsupervised representation learning on the ModelNet40 shape classification dataset and significant gains in few-shot part segmentation on the ShapeNetPart dataset.Code available at https://github.com/matheusgadelha/PointCloudLearningACD
Inferring programs which generate 2D and 3D shapes is important for reverse engineering, editing, and more. Training such inference models is challenging due to the lack of paired (shape, program) data in most domains. A popular approach is to pre-train a model on synthetic data and then fine-tune on real shapes using slow, unstable reinforcement learning. In this paper, we argue that self-training is a viable alternative for fine-tuning such models. Self-training is a semi-supervised learning paradigm where a model assigns pseudo-labels to unlabeled data, and then retrains with (data, pseudo-label) pairs as the new ground truth. We show that for constructive solid geometry and assembly-based modeling, self-training outperforms state-of-the-art reinforcement learning approaches. Additionally, shape program inference has a unique property that circumvents a potential downside of self-training (incorrect pseudo-label assignment): inferred programs are executable. For a given shape from our distribution of interest $mathbf{x}^*$ and its predicted program $mathbf{z}$, one can execute $mathbf{z}$ to obtain a shape $mathbf{x}$ and train on $(mathbf{z}, mathbf{x})$ pairs, rather than $(mathbf{z}, mathbf{x}^*)$ pairs. We term this procedure latent execution self training (LEST). We demonstrate that self training infers shape programs with higher shape reconstruction accuracy and converges significantly faster than reinforcement learning approaches, and in some domains, LEST can further improve this performance.
A neural radiance field (NeRF) is a scene model supporting high-quality view synthesis, optimized per scene. In this paper, we explore enabling user editing of a category-level NeRF - also known as a conditional radiance field - trained on a shape category. Specifically, we introduce a method for propagating coarse 2D user scribbles to the 3D space, to modify the color or shape of a local region. First, we propose a conditional radiance field that incorporates new modular network components, including a shape branch that is shared across object instances. Observing multiple instances of the same category, our model learns underlying part semantics without any supervision, thereby allowing the propagation of coarse 2D user scribbles to the entire 3D region (e.g., chair seat). Next, we propose a hybrid network update strategy that targets specific network components, which balances efficiency and accuracy. During user interaction, we formulate an optimization problem that both satisfies the users constraints and preserves the original object structure. We demonstrate our approach on various editing tasks over three shape datasets and show that it outperforms prior neural editing approaches. Finally, we edit the appearance and shape of a real photograph and show that the edit propagates to extrapolated novel views.
Photorealistic rendering of dynamic humans is an important ability for telepresence systems, virtual shopping, synthetic data generation, and more. Recently, neural rendering methods, which combine techniques from computer graphics and machine learning, have created high-fidelity models of humans and objects. Some of these methods do not produce results with high-enough fidelity for driveable human models (Neural Volumes) whereas others have extremely long rendering times (NeRF). We propose a novel compositional 3D representation that combines the best of previous methods to produce both higher-resolution and faster results. Our representation bridges the gap between discrete and continuous volumetric representations by combining a coarse 3D-structure-aware grid of animation codes with a continuous learned scene function that maps every position and its corresponding local animation code to its view-dependent emitted radiance and local volume density. Differentiable volume rendering is employed to compute photo-realistic novel views of the human head and upper body as well as to train our novel representation end-to-end using only 2D supervision. In addition, we show that the learned dynamic radiance field can be used to synthesize novel unseen expressions based on a global animation code. Our approach achieves state-of-the-art results for synthesizing novel views of dynamic human heads and the upper body.
Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have recently gained a surge of interest within the computer vision community for its power to synthesize photorealistic novel views of real-world scenes. One limitation of NeRF, however, is its requirement of accurate camera poses to learn the scene representations. In this paper, we propose Bundle-Adjusting Neural Radiance Fields (BARF) for training NeRF from imperfect (or even unknown) camera poses -- the joint problem of learning neural 3D representations and registering camera frames. We establish a theoretical connection to classical image alignment and show that coarse-to-fine registration is also applicable to NeRF. Furthermore, we show that naively applying positional encoding in NeRF has a negative impact on registration with a synthesis-based objective. Experiments on synthetic and real-world data show that BARF can effectively optimize the neural scene representations and resolve large camera pose misalignment at the same time. This enables view synthesis and localization of video sequences from unknown camera poses, opening up new avenues for visual localization systems (e.g. SLAM) and potential applications for dense 3D mapping and reconstruction.
