We study the effect of the nucleon-nucleon-lambda (NN$Lambda$) three-body force on neutron stars. In particular, we consider the NN$Lambda$ force recently derived by the J{u}lich--Bonn--Munich group within the framework of chiral effective field theory at next-to-next-to-leading order. This force, together with realistic nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-hyperon interactions, is used to calculate the equation of state and the structure of neutron stars within the many-body non-relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach. Our results show that the inclusion of the NN$Lambda$ force leads to an equation of state stiff enough such that the resulting neutron star maximum mass is compatible with the largest currently measured ($sim 2 M_odot$) neutron star masses. Using a perturbative many-body approach we calculate also the separation energy of the $Lambda$ in some hypernuclei finding that the agreement with the experimental data improves for the heavier ones when the effect of the NN$Lambda$ force is taken into account.

The detection of gravitational radiation, emitted in the aftermath of the excitation of neutron star quasi-normal modes, has the potential to provide unprecedented access to the properties of matter in the star interior, and shed new light on the dynamics of nuclear interactions at microscopic level. Of great importance, in this context, will be the sensitivity to themodelling of three-nucleon interactions, which are known to play a critical role in the high-density regime. We report the results of a calculation of the frequencies and damping times of the fundamental mode, carried out using the equation of state of Akmal, Pandharipande and Ravenhall as a baseline, and varying the strength of the isoscalar repulsive term the Urbana IX potential within a range consistent with multimessenger astrophysical observations. The results of our analysis indicate that repulsive three-nucleon interactions strongly affect the stiffness of the equation of state, which in turn determines the pattern of the gravitational radiation frequencies, largely independent of the mass of the source. The observational implications are also discussed.
We explore the constraints on the three-nucleon force (3NF) of chiral effective field theory ($chi$EFT) that are provided by bound-state observables in the $A=3$ and $A=4$ sectors. Our statistically rigorous analysis incorporates experimental error, computational method uncertainty, and the uncertainty due to truncation of the $chi$EFT expansion at next-to-next-to-leading order. A consistent solution for the ${}^3$H binding energy, the ${}^4$He binding energy and radius, and the ${}^3$H $beta$-decay rate can only be obtained if $chi$EFT truncation errors are included in the analysis. All of these except the $beta$-decay rate give essentially degenerate constraints on the 3NF low-energy constants, so it is crucial for estimating these parameters. We use eigenvector continuation for fast and accurate emulation of No-Core Shell Model calculations of the considered few-nucleon observables. This facilitates sampling of the posterior probability distribution, allowing us to also determine the distributions of the hyperparameters that quantify the truncation error. We find a $chi$EFT expansion parameter of $Q=0.33 pm 0.06$ for these observables.

New experimental data on 2+ energies of 136,138Sn confirms the trend of lower 2+ excitation energies of even-even tin isotopes with N > 82 compared to those with N< 82. However, none of the theoretical predictions using both realistic and empirical interactions can reproduce experimental data on excitation energies as well as the transition probabilities (B(E2; 6+ -> 4+)) of these nuclei, simultaneously, apart from one whose matrix elements have been changed empirically to produce mixed seniority states by weakening pairing. We have shown that the experimental result also shows good agreement with the theory in which three body forces have been included in a realistic interaction. The new theoretical results on transition probabilities have been discussed to identify the experimental quantities which will clearly distinguish between different views.

The long-range terms of the subleading chiral three-nucleon force [published in Phys.,Rev.,C77, 064004 (2008)] are specified to the case of three neutrons. From these $3n$-interactions an effective density-dependent neutron-neutron potential $V_text{med}$ in pure neutron matter is derived. Following the division of the pertinent 3n-diagrams into two-pion exchange, two-pion-one-pion exchange and ring topology, all self-closings and concatenations of two neutron-lines to an in-medium loop are evaluated. The momentum and $k_n$-dependent potentials associated with the spin-operators $1,, vecsigma_1!cdot!vecsigma_2,, vecsigma_1!cdot!vec q, vecsigma_2!cdot!vec q,, i( vecsigma_1!+!vecsigma_2)!cdot ! (vec q!times ! vec p,),, (vecsigma_1!cdot!vec p,vecsigma_2!cdot!vec p+vecsigma_1!cdot!vec p,, vecsigma_2!cdot!vec p,)$ and $ vecsigma_1!cdot ! (vec q!times ! vec p,)vecsigma_2!cdot ! (vec q!times ! vec p,)$ are expressed in terms of functions, which are either given in closed analytical form or require at most one numerical integration. The subsubleading chiral 3N-force is treated in the same way. The obtained results for $V_text{med}$ are helpful to implement the long-range chiral three-body forces into advanced neutron matter calculations.
We review the impact of nuclear forces on matter at neutron-rich extremes. Recent results have shown that neutron-rich nuclei become increasingly sensitive to three-nucleon forces, which are at the forefront of theoretical developments based on effective field theories of quantum chromodynamics. This includes the formation of shell structure, the spectroscopy of exotic nuclei, and the location of the neutron dripline. Nuclear forces also constrain the properties of neutron-rich matter, including the neutron skin, the symmetry energy, and the structure of neutron stars. We first review our understanding of three-nucleon forces and show how chiral effective field theory makes unique predictions for many-body forces. Then, we survey results with three-nucleon forces in neutron-rich oxygen and calcium isotopes and neutron-rich matter, which have been explored with a range of many-body methods. Three-nucleon forces therefore provide an exciting link between theoretical, experimental and observational nuclear physics frontiers.
