We show that it is possible to engineer magnetic multi-domain configurations without domain walls in a prototypical rare earth/transition metal ferrimagnet using keV He+ ion bombardment. We additionally shown that these patterns display a particularly stable magnetic configuration due to a deep minimum in the free energy of the system which is caused by flux closure and the corresponding reduction of the magnetostatic part of the total free energy. This is possible because light-ion bombardment differently affects an elements relative contribution to the effective properties of the ferrimagnet. The impact of bombardment is stronger for rare earth elements. Therefore, it is possible to influence the relative contributions of the two magnetic subsystems in a controlled manner. The selection of material system and the use of light-ion bombardment open a route to engineer domain patterns in continuous magnetic films much smaller than what is currently considered possible.

Noncollinear spin textures in ferromagnetic ultrathin films are currently the subject of renewed interest since the discovery of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). This antisymmetric exchange interaction selects a given chirality for the spin textures and allows stabilising configurations with nontrivial topology. Moreover, it has many crucial consequences on the dynamical properties of these topological structures, including chiral domain walls (DWs) and magnetic skyrmions. In the recent years the study of noncollinear spin textures has been extended from single ultrathin layers to magnetic multilayers with broken inversion symmetry. This extension of the structures in the vertical dimension allows very efficient current-induced motion and room-temperature stability for both Neel DWs and skyrmions. Here we show how in such multilayered systems the interlayer interactions can actually lead to more complex, hybrid chiral magnetisation arrangements. The described thickness-dependent reorientation of DWs is experimentally confirmed by studying demagnetised multilayers through circular dichroism in x-ray resonant magnetic scattering. We also demonstrate a simple yet reliable method for determining the magnitude of the DMI from static domains measurements even in the presence of these hybrid chiral structures, by taking into account the actual profile of the DWs. The advent of these novel hybrid chiral textures has far-reaching implications on how to stabilise and manipulate DWs as well as skymionic structures in magnetic multilayers.
We have studied the magnetic properties of multilayers composed of ferromagnetic metal Co and heavy metals with strong spin orbit coupling (Pt and Ir). Multilayers with symmetric (ABA stacking) and asymmetric (ABC stacking) structures are grown to study the effect of broken structural inversion symmetry. We compare the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) energy of symmetric Pt/Co/Pt, Ir/Co/Ir multilayers and asymmetric Pt/Co/Ir, Ir/Co/Pt multilayers. First, the interface contribution to the PMA is studied using the Co layer thickness dependence of the effective PMA energy. Comparison of the interfacial PMA between the Ir/Co/Pt, Pt/Co/Ir asymmetric structures and Pt/Co/Pt, Ir/Co/Ir symmetric structures indicate that the broken structural inversion symmetry induced PMA is small compared to the overall interfacial PMA. Second, we find the magnetic anisotropy field is significantly increased in multilayers when the ferromagnetic layers are antiferromagnetically coupled via interlayer exchange coupling (IEC). Macrospin model calculations can qualitatively account for the relation between the anisotropy field and the IEC. Among the structures studied, IEC is the largest for the asymmetric Ir/Co/Pt multilayers: the exchange coupling field exceeds 3 T and consequently, the anisotropy field approaches 10 T. Third, comparing the asymmetric Ir/Co/Pt and Pt/Co/Ir structures, we find the IEC and, to some extent, the interface PMA are stronger for the former than the latter. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism studies suggest that the proximity induced magnetization in Pt is larger for the Ir/Co/Pt multilayers than the inverted structure, which may partly account for the difference in the magnetic properties. These results show the intricate relation between PMA, IEC and the proximity induced magnetization that can be exploited to design artificial structures with unique magnetic characteristics.

Spin wave, the collective excitation of magnetic order, is one of the fundamental angular momentum carriers in magnetic systems. Understanding the spin wave propagation in magnetic textures lies in the heart of developing pure magnetic information processing schemes. Here we show that the spin wave propagation across a chiral domain wall follows simple geometric trajectories, similar to the geometric optics. And the geometric behaviors are qualitatively different in normally magnetized film and tangentially magnetized film. We identify the lateral shift, refraction, and total reflection of spin wave across a ferromagnetic domain wall. Moreover, these geometric scattering phenomena become polarization-dependent in antiferromagnets, indicating the emergence of spin wave birefringence inside antiferromagnetic domain wall.
Materials hosting magnetic skyrmions at room temperature could enable new computing architectures as well as compact and energetically efficient magnetic storage such as racetrack memories. In a racetrack device, information is coded by the presence/absence of magnetic skyrmions forming a chain that is moved through the device. The skyrmion Hall effect that would eventually lead to an annihilation of the skyrmions at the edges of the racetrack can be suppressed for example by anti-ferromagnetically-coupled skyrmions. However, avoiding modifications of the inter-skyrmion distances in the racetrack remains challenging. As a solution to this issue, a chain of bits could also be encoded by two different solitons such as a skyrmion and a chiral bobber. The major limitation of this approach is that it has solely been realized in B20-type single crystalline material systems that support skyrmions only at low temperatures, thus hindering the efficacy for future applications. Here we demonstrate that a hybrid ferro/ferri/ferromagnetic multilayer system can host two distinct skyrmion phases at room temperature. By matching quantitative magnetic force microscopy data with micromagnetic simulations, we reveal that the two phases represent tubular skyrmions and partial skyrmions (similar to skyrmion bobbers). Furthermore, the tubular skyrmion can be converted into a partial skyrmion. Such multilayer systems may thus serve as a platform for designing skyrmion memory applications using distinct types of skyrmions and potentially for storing information using the vertical dimension in a thin film device.
The motion of magnetic domain walls in ultrathin magnetic heterostructures driven by current via the spin Hall torque is described. We show results from perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB|MgO heterostructures with various heavy metal underlayers. The domain wall moves along or against the current flow depending on the underlayer material. The direction to which the domain wall moves is associated with the chirality of the domain wall spiral formed in these heterostructures. The one-dimensional model is used to describe the experimental results and extract parameters such as the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange constant which is responsible for the formation of the domain wall spiral. Fascinating effects arising from the control of interfaces in magnetic heterostructures are described.
